This World Cup has been mostly a fantastic advertisement for this game we love. Until this match. Shameful all around. Italy was cynical and negative and used every trick in the book to see this through as a draw. And anything good that Uruguay did is entirely wiped out by yet another moment of sheer lunacy/idiocy/madness from Suarez. I can only hope that his behavior on this stage, is finally enough for people to say...enough.

Worse is Uruguay has WON after his antics at 2 consecutive WCs.

What in the world goes through his head when he does this? There's no way he gets away with it with all the video replays after the match. Why would he take himself out of the WC? He's done now. Just can't believe his stupidity. I'm fine with him never playing again.

The worst thing was about to happen and that was Greece getting to the knockout stages by scoring 1 goal in 3 games  Mercifully Ivory Coast scored and all they needed to do was hold on, then in the last minute of stoppage time :angry-banghead: moronic penalty, and now the poster child for ugly, mind numbing football is advancing.

Today was not a good day for the game, in general. Some examples of how not to play were rewarded. Let's just hope that class eventually prevails.

The Italy-Uraguay match was ugly and brutal. I really can't stand the Italian antics and Suarez is a whole different level of sleazy. I hope he is permanently banned from World Cup play for his premeditated assault because that is what this was. His actions simply were not within the confines of the game and if there were any justice in the matter it would be turned over to the authorities for prosecution.

On the other hand, Costa Rica continued to be the poster child for organized football that is all TEAM-oriented. In the process, Bryan Ruiz showed the entire British Isles that he was the master of everyone on that pitch, and that the canard that he can't play at the very top level is a joke. It takes an amazing manager to completely misuse a player of Ruiz's talent for the better part of 2.5 seasons. Jol is truly remarkable.

A good result on Thursday will show how far CONCACAF has come. Africa, on the other hand, seems to be a bit out of it.

To these points, I agree. Ruiz worked very, very well with Dempsey and Dembele - which should be no shock to anyone. He is a great player but needs to be utilized to his strengths (but don't we all?) - Fulham accomplished that about 25% of the time. Jeez

With this and the match fixing in the news, it's nothing but distractions for Ghana.

    And then there was 16: http://www.google.com/search?client=saf ... 8&oe=UTF-8

    • 5 South American teams, but 4 will have a mini-tournament for a semi-final berth w/only Argentina on the other side

    • 6 European teams, with a Germany v France Quarterfinal looming.

    • 3 Concacaf teams doing work :banana-wrench: a dream Quarterfinal of Mexico v Costa Rica?? Probably not as Holland has to like their chances of getting to a semi-final.

    • 2 African teams, Ivory Coast must still be kicking themselves for not joining Nigeria and Algeria. Have to feel good for Nigeria w/what's going on in their country.

I hope Costa Rica score early and often to contnue their run and I like Mexico's chances against the Dutch. Mexico is flying pretty high at the moment. That US team isn't looking to bad either.

the naysayers are going to have to figure out a new reason to dismiss Messi's talent and "all time player ranking." The last 3 or 4 years it's been all, "Sure, but what's he ever done for Argentina?" This summer? Without Messi, Argentina is sitting in a pub with England and Spain wondering WTF happened!

Bravo - he's my son's favorite so we watch him all of the time. Moments of sheer brilliance from the lil' Argentine thus far.

Brazil is a bar rattler from being out of this and Chile's keeper has been terrific in regulation and extra time. Let's see how PKs go.
