Jim, prior to the end of apartheid, soccer was the black sport. Several years back, one of the TV sports magazine programs did a report on it. The club league they focused on was, by that time, about 5% white. It was interesting seeing the white players going through the same Zulu dances and chants prior to the game. It's going to be interesting to see what impact hosting the WC will have on the sport. I know when I lived in England before the South African Boycott [under 40s: go to Wiki], the only non-Olympic sports they were known for were Cricket, Rugby, and Tennis.

Along with the profile ESPN did on Robben Island, they also did one of their "30 for 30" specials on the "real" story behind the movie Invictus, including interviews with François Pienaar, who is a hell of a lot bigger that Matt Damon will ever be! It was, of course, narrated by Morgan Freeman and was also incredibly well done. Unfortunately, I can't seem to find another showing until July 9th.

I heard Rio by Duran Duran this weekend -- be forewarned, some of the visual images are as over the top and cheesy as it gets. Anyway, all you need is the chorus here.

I thought of the US' first opponents in the WC and their fine captain, and I came up with this --

His name is Rio and he's got an aching baaaack
He's lost his pace and he can't stop the Yank attaaaaack
He wears the armband and he'll get Capello saaaaaaacked
He's old and slow and he is England's center baaaaaack.

    Come on Yanks!

and Jozy's hungry like the wolf.

We have to take advantage of the poor form of Rio and Terry, as well as the uncertainty of 2 or their 3 CBs. If we don't keep Johnson and Cole busy worrying about Dempsey and Donovan, England will flat kill us.

Everybody's making a big thing out of England stinking up their last two matches. They did, but they won them both. That's scary.

Well aparently they beat Japan 2 -1 today but Japan scored all three goals. Dont know what that means exactly but I think we may be two own goals better than Japan.

Gave me a good laugh so thanks on that account. However, it rings true enough that it also gives me a bit of a stomach ache, especially after the South African president said he hopes the US does not make it out of the group stages becasue he doesnt think his country could handle the security required.[/b]

Anybody see this ridiculous Dos Santos drama that's going on with Mexico? Great comedy if you ask me.

Thanks Nev. What a great day, between that and Joe Red not making the Italy squad.

Talked to my El Tri buddy about and Giovanni Dos Santos is referred to as a spoiled kid who doesn't work and is pissing his talent away. The younger Dos Santos is only 18 and in the Barca reserves. Apparently the dad is the problem (and if you noticed the only one quoted in the soccernet story).

Have we all seen Landon crossing the Delaware? I love it! And no complaining now, ESPN is promoting the hell out of this thing.

    'Crybaby' James never disappoints:

David James blasts 'dreadful' and 'horrible' Jabulani ball

I've been reading about his various complaints since I followed Friedel to Liverpool.
It's always something! should be his motto.

To be fair, lots of the perception is unwarranted. He says something more reasonable later.
Like... ummm.. 'everyone plays the same ball'

BTW..anyone else hit by deja vu?
