great piece andy -- way to make bmore proud!

i've written my opinions about MLS ad nausea, but my biggest complaint is that all they care about is $$$. Thats it. No ifs, or's, or buts about it.

Yeah, most other leagues care about that too. But there's history and a culture to them that hold them back and keep them in line (to a degree).

There isn't that in the MLS and as a result we see this unmitigated commercialism, and its crap I cannot tolerate.

    MLS be damned.

I should have just let things lie over there, but I couldnt stop myself from posting.

I love this country, but I get really tired of people claiming we need to modify the game to match Americans. I really believe that if you put an authentic product on the field the Americans will change and they will be far more fanatical because of it. There is a reason why this is the worlds game...

I dont give a crap if the Jim Rome wannabees dont like the game. We dont need to change it to fit them, or the suits that are looking for a place to park their money.

Ok, WhitesBhoy, I know you have promised to not to express your views about the "MSL" on here anymore. But I am asking you to give your perspective here and break that vow just one time. Because I do believe I need to see why people don't like it and know what you think should be changed.

I believe Garber could learn a lot about how to improve the league if he actually listened to people who don't follow the league and really don't like it. This would do the MLS so much more good than what he thinks is best because he just doesn't know what will do it more good. Although we all know that will never happen.... That is to say he has made some solid decisions and the MLS is experiencing tremendous growth under him but I digress.

P.S. Andy your letter hit the nail on the head. I found myself agreeing with every opinion (which were well put). Congrats on a wonderful piece of writing.

Ian, I do not know if I have the energy to commit to espousing my detailed opinion on this right now. I have very limited ideas on how to search this website, but I have offered my ideas up before, I think several times, and it falls in line with andy's ideas. Soccer is not a "new" sport, except in the United States. We don't need to reinvent the wheel, as there are plenty of examples around the world on how to make this work. The United States is not so unique or special as to need all the contrivances (mo's word use recently, and I love it) that go along with what is considered professional soccer here. If we really want to "build" a league that people love, really love, sometimes thinking smaller (and I am not talking about the size of the league necessarily) and more personally is better. At least to start.

Interesting points everyone. I am a die hard RSL fan and after every match I listen to the post match show on the radio. I can't tell you how many times this year people have called and and claimed that it was their first soccer match ever and how they are converted already after just one match. That says a lot for the atmosphere in the stadium as RSL hasn't exactly been a world beater this year. I just think it is a process to get to where we all want it to go and I give kudos to the League for the successes they have had thus far.

One word from an Old Guy. I've caught about 25 matches over the last three seasons -- on television -- and this is a much better product than we've ever had over here. It is significantly better than the old NASL, where matches were played with the same intensity as your average testimonial match. One thing I really appreciate is how the fans have taken to it. Toronto's lead the league, but I like the lunatics who support Chivas, Chicago, RSL, DCU, etc. etc.

Fog, you're the only other one old enough to remember much about the NASL. Do you agree that the MLS product is markedly surperior?
