    "The Beckham Experiment"?

They couldn't come up with a beter title than that??? Sad.

Still, the book will sell, probably especially in the States. And still, Beckham's influence on spreading soccer here continues. Better or worse for him personally, he's still achieving the goal...if you believe him.

I guess the experiment is this: Will Beckham have a better chance playing for England sitting on the AC Milan bench for 90 minutes or playing for The Galaxy for 90 minutes?

This is setting up perfectly; for those who want to see him in LA for the rest of his career, that is.

If his primary concern is to play, then we are seeing his earlier circumstance all over again. If he goes the rest of the season without riding to the rescue as he did formerly, he'll kiss Milan goodbye.

Doesnt mean he'll stay in LA, though. He might elect to play cheaper for a smaller Prem side. Or maybe a glam location in France.

I have to say, Cakes found his perfect foil for such a timely release of criticism. A publicist could not have a planned a better target for a domestic sports star who was struggling with the perception that they were soft and out-of-touch.

    Or could they,....

Alright, so I made that shit up. Still....

    Note:

The names of all involved have been spelled correctly, throughout.

The Los Angeles Galaxy is owned by the Sports Management Division of AEG. Which recently managed the logistics and production of the Michael Jackson Public Memorial.

And I DIDNT make that shit up.

I will be at his first home match as I follow my adopted Sounders out to LA August 15.

I adopted them as my team back when they were announced for the MLS for various reasons. I have already gone out to LA to see them against Chivas and then up to Seattle recently watching them beat Colorado.

We will have a group of around 200 for the Galaxy match sporting the rave green.

Beckham seems really sharp until he opens his mouth. He is as dim as a Toc H.

For once I really like something that Landycakes said.

    Spangler......, proceed with caution.

Had a very personal tete a tete with him way back when. He's intelligent, but he's not afraid to invoke journalistic sensationalism.

    Heh... Spangler v Wahl!

Having read both for a while {Spangler not so much of course}, I'm pretty confident that if soccer freaks had to choose one or the other, Wahl wins in a landslide. But it will play out interestingly, whatever the angles.

But I like the interview and I think it's couched in just the right way.

I think the nut of it is what Beckham wants to accomplish and how he wants to do it, is polluted by the politics his 'handlers' employ.

That's the impression I always had and until Beckham proves me wrong, I'll stand by it.

    {read that twitter from bottom up, of course}

Here's a good blog post including the videoDavid Beckham Answers Critics In Galaxy Press Conference

and on same site, here's a shot at Donovan for his 'continued immaturity'. Gotta say the writer makes a lot of sense.

But let's hold on a minute. If we dont watch out we're in danger of thinking this is something peculiar to US Soccer and MLS in specific.

Hell no. We see the same thing play out in every other sport and league in the world!

I just had another thought.. what is so special about Donovan playing in Europe.. specifically how does it help our US team performance?
Until we get world class striking capabilities, what does the increased 'vision' and distributing skills he might pick up mean in a practical sense?

He'll be giving a ball and no one's there.. right?

'course that's fodder for another thread.

    Beckham PLAYS

    .. and it's all good!

Galaxy mix well with returning Beckham
Club sees no adverse effects from inclusion of Beckham in midfield

Y'all can click to google news and look up 'beckham galaxy' for yer own selves to get more pablum or dirt.

My view... Arena's finally got a team he can settle on and everyone's gonna more or less ignore the drama. This brings the Gals back to where they are almost as formidable as they were when they fired Sigi. There's a lesson in that.
And I aint gonna draw you a pitcher, either.

Interestingly, SOCCERNET and the wire services are claiming that Becks was a drag on the team and that they somehow won inspite of him. Of course, half the article was spent pointing out the number of empty seats as opposed to the last two seasons -- like baseball attendance wailers, they ignored the whole bit about less disposable income than last July. I'm just sorry I missed the match.
