Summer '08: Ins and Outs

It's an inside joke on many forums. Some seem to think this guy is the new jesus so we make fun of them by saying this.

 

I hope Everton say no, he goes to another team and scores 5 goals against us. What a joke our medicals are. I understand you might be a bit worried, but it can't be that bad if we're still willing to pay 8M for him.

 

Could work out brilliantly for Fulham in the end though. Everton is under pressure to raise funds quickly and they are not likely to pull the deal completely. 8 million quid is still a decent chunk of change and could go a long way in helping them fund transfers.

Shrewd business could pay off or bite us in the butt. We will see...

Fulham definitely needs to add another striker to the side before the window closes. If they are not going to sign AJ, they need to find another quality signing for the season.

That is a lot of money to pay for a striker coming off an average season. I'm glad Fulham have medicals that actually run the rule over a player rather than give him a rubber stamp.

Gera? No problem. Stoor? No problem. Schwarzer? No problem. Zamora and Paintsil? Sailed through.

There is a good, solid reason Johnson has been red-flagged.

£12 million is too much money for a player your medical staff believes has knee issues. Hell, I believe £8 million is too much to spend in that case.

 

I know what it means. I'm saying the shits corny, and old. How long is the joke going to be about Obama's passionate base? Doesn't McCain want a passionate base too? I imagine if people were as crazy over McCain, it'd be a point of pride.

It'll all be clearer on election day, me thinks.

It may be old, but I'm still going to make fun of Obama supports if they continue to wear shirts with silly rah-rah slogans like "yes we can", "together we can", "give hope a chance", and (my personal favorite) "i'm fired up."

Is this a presidential election or a high school pep rally? Its become almost as bad as the Republicans' "Fight them there so we don't have to fight them here" mantra in 2004.

Oh, and back to the topic....what happened with Gomez?

 

Gomez's club turned down something like a 20million pound bid for him. Don't think we are in the running, but that is just a guess.

 

Comedy writers know if you have to explain why the joke is funny to your audience, it isn't funny.

Hey, I know McCain is a little short on campaign slogans. You make fun but admit it - you wish you had a t-shirt to wear, and something other than "Country First" which is completely useless. "I'm Fired Up" is kind of funny, though . . kind of like McDonald's "I'm Lovin It."

To answer your other question, it's not a pep rally, it's a campaign rally . . you know, that thing that candidates typically to do to get out to the people and inspire them to not only vote, but vote for them?

I hope McCain is doing that! And hopefully, for his sake, people are getting involved in ways other than fanning themselves with a campaign pamphlet and checking their watches.

Since this thing came about, there has been 0% chance of him ever coming here. He said he wanted to go to the Premiership sometime in his career, but I don't think he had Fulham in mind. If Bayern can't get him, we can't get him. Furthermore, he said he would not be making a summer move.

 

I guess hypothetically, if Fulham were to make exactly the same offer to Stuttgart as Bayern did, Stuttgart might accept the one from Fulham and not the one from Bayern so that they wouldn't have to play against him twice a year. (Putting aside for a moment the fact that Gomez might not start for Bayern with Klose, Toni and Podolski already there.)

I'm not sure whether soccer teams actually think that way, but I know baseball teams apply similar logic to this, so maybe soccer teams do too.

 

I wouldn't care if we signed Gomez, or another striker for that matter. Now maybe come January if all of ours are in dry spells, maybe. I think we are fine for now and should just work on getting the boys all on the same page. We have to hit the season running with games against Arsenal and Manchester United in the first month.

Even though there is no shame to losing to those two teams, getting behind early on could dent Fulham's continued enthusiasm and esteem from last season and a fairly good pre-season run.

 

Holy crap, there's one friendly left to be played (against Torino in London on Saturday) and then the season starts! Yeah, it really is about time to be starting to get everyone on the same page, isn't it?

So, going along with that theme, here's a bit of evaluation about how the current roster compares to that at the closing of the 2007 summer window (i.e. without Knight and Diop, who were with the club when the season started but left by the end of August). I apologize for any omissions:

Players part of the squad now and on 9/1/07:
Niemi; Volz, Hughes, Konchesky, Baird, Leijer; Seol, Smertin, Davies, Davis, Dempsey, Bouazza, Murphy, Bullard; Healy, Kamara, John

This is a net gain from last year, I'd say. Kamara is injured now; Bullard was injured then. Murphy wasn't ready to start the season having not really been part of Spurs' plans. Dempsey has his first full season under his belt, and Leijer is closer to being ready to be part of the first team.

Changes at goalkeeper:
Out: Keller, Warner, Batista
In: Schwarzer, Stockdale

I don't know whether Schwarzer is better than Keller, but he's younger at least, so I'll call that a net gain. Warner was injury cover who we were happy to have, and hopefully we won't need. I guess Stockdale has more potential than Batista, since we picked the former over the latter, but I don't know enough about either to really say.

Changes at defense:
Out: Bocanegra, Christanval, Stefanovic, Pearce, Omozusi, Ashton
In: Hangeland, Stoor, Paintsil, Kallio

The Hangman is a net gain over any of the departures, but I'm again struck by how thin we are at center back at the moment.

Changes at midfield:
Out: Nobody, as far as I can figure, though maybe a sale of Steven Davis is still in the works.
In: Gera, Andreasen, Andranik.

In contrast to the defense, the midfield has added strength and creativity as compared to last year. Hopefully there will be plenty of competition for places here; nobody should be resting on his laurels.

Changes at forward:
Out: Brian McBride
In: Bobby Zamora, Eddie Johnson, Erik Nevland

Lots more depth here as well. I think I'd forgotten how thin we looked at forward after McBride got hurt last year. He's obviously a big loss, but hopefully Zamora is up to the task. Johnson has pace and potential but hasn't gotten it done in his half-season; maybe he'll get a chance with Kamara hurt. Nevland is The Closer.

I'm... yeah, I'm still concerned about how thin the defense is, but if Roy is happy with Stoor - Hughes - Hangeland - Konchesky then I guess I can be too. If we're going to play 5 in the middle then it's good that there's as much depth as there seems to be, even if Bouazza is again the only natural left-sided player with Cook out on loan.

Sorry about the rambling.

 

I'm going to look at the glass being half full here. We are roughly the same as last year in goal. We improved in the midfield, and that was where I thought we were strongest last year. We improved at least somewhat up front. If the only real sticking point is the back four, especially CB, a club like Fulham with finite resources should consider that a job well done.

Oh, and Woy, stick to your guns about Johnson. If he isn't medically fit, then don't throw 8-12 mil down the drain chasing him. If Everton gets all bent out of shape about it, they can go cry to their mommies. Good to see we are doing this right.

 

I'm hearing way too much crying here. I hate Mccain too, but at least he's not an arrogant prick like that idiot Obama.




Anyways, we won't sign Johnson and we'll sign some shitty player to replace him. It's pretty simple.
