We have a lot of central midfielders.

Chimbonda would be a delightful addition. I think he would return to form at a Club like Ours.

I'm not clear on why Spurs would sell him to us rather than Stalteri.

With Hutton, Spurs don't really need both, so as a backup they may prefer to keep the cheaper option.

    I guess that's possible, but:

    A) Spurs don't strike me as terribly interested in pinching pennies; and
    B) They might just as easily prefer to keep the more versatile option, which I *think* is Chimbonda, though I could be wrong.

I'd rather have the Canuck. Chimbonda has turned into a defensive liability.

By the way, the Portugal/Czech match reminds me ... weren't we supposed to be signing Ujfalusi in Jan 2007, Summer 2007, Jan 2008? Whatever happened to that?

I'm getting the feeling we're going to be seeing a lot more of that 4-5-1 this year. It's still early though, plenty of time for the picture to change.

Chimbonda only plays as long as he wants to play. When he decides he's too good for your club, then he shuts things down and waits for you to sell him off.

Unless he's matured since he left Wigan, I'd pass on him and try to bring in a more consistent option.

If he comes to Fulham with a view that we are a long-term destination for him, then he'd be worth bringing in. If he thinks we're a stepping-stone, then we'll only get his best for a certain amount of time.

Two modest, yet impressive signings so far by Fulham. Summer changes look to be much more positive than last summer's changes.

I agree with Don on Zheng Zhi. He looked quite useful for Charlton when they were in the EPL last. He apparently can play all over the place much like Dempsey can.

By making modest signings for free rather than a couple million pounds here, a couple million pounds there, Roy conserves his transfer budget if he wants to make a big splash at some point. (Hey, they're saying Ronaldinho might be on the move, eh? Eh? Or perhaps Klaas-Jan Huntelaar feels he has accomplished all he can in the Eredivise.) Even if he doesn't, it's still smart spending by him thus far.

Yep, pretty much. Although I doubt Fulham attracts any 'big name' guys even if it has the money. It's a possibility of course, but Fulham isn't an attractive enough team to get anybody who is thinking of playing for someone who will challenge for Europe or who is in Europe.

    Same old story.

Another midfielder on a free transfer and this one certainly seemed under the radar.

I remember seeing this guy play for Bolton a few times and I thought he was quality. It will be interesting to see how he figures into Roy's plans.

I was very impressed with him. One thing I noticed was that there was a buzz in the Bolton crowd [all 38 of them] every time he got the ball in open space. And he's a good age also.

I just hope Pettyfog doesn't bomb him!

Only 20 appearances for Notlob in two full seasons, and they didn't offer him a new contract. Sounds like a depth signing rather than someone who's going to displace anyone from the lineup, though I can be wrong.

Edit to add: In his interview on the site, Roy says he's "defensive midfield cover."

See, this post makes me feel good as a former soldier. By flying under the radar, Fog takes the blame for being a bad guy, while I... am not tipping my hand on an internet forum

Apparently he fell out of favor w/Megson (which isn't necessarily a bad thing). Have to trust Roy on this one, but since Andreason was the only defensive mid this seems like another quality free transfer.
