Striker Montella joins Fulham on loan from Roma
    Thu 04 Jan, 2:34 PM

LONDON (Reuters) - Former Italy striker Vincenzo Montella has joined Fulham on loan from AS Roma until the end of the season, the two clubs said on Thursday.

The 32-year-old, a key player in the championship-winning side of 2000-01, scored 83 goals in 180 games for Roma and three goals in 19 appearances for the Azzurri.

Famous in Italy for his arms-outstretched 'aeroplane' goal celebration, a recurring shoulder injury has kept Montella out of action for long periods in the past year.

Even when fit, the preference of Roma coach Luciano Spalletti for a lone striker has often left him on the bench.

The Italian told Fulham's Web site (www.fulhamfc.com): "It has been an ambition of mine to play in England at some point in my career and I am happy to be given the opportunity.

"For me, I just want to play football and score goals, so I am looking forward to being able to do that with Fulham as soon as possible."

Montella's most memorable Roma performance came in March 2002 when he scored four times in a 5-1 demolition of city rivals Lazio.

I count Dempsey as in, as there's been no news on the board rejecting him, that means it's in paperwork.

    Ins:
    Montella
    Dempsey

    Outs:
    John {pending, but get real.. makes too much sense to not be true}

Montella seems a great finisher, and that's what we need, for sure.

But watching his goals leaves me a little less than totally impressed.

Might be just me... compare the goal compilation to Dempsey's; yes, different roles to be sure, yet....

83 goals in 180 matches in Serie A is phenomenal. If he's a finisher, that's just what we need to play off McBride.

    Who did John go to?

No offense but this is why I hate 3 open threads talking about Fulham's transfers. :(

John is rumored to be going to Watford.

    John who?

Once knew a guy who thought he played for Fulham, with last name John. But the fella was rarely in play, even when on the pitch. Seems like many moons ago.

I generally wouldn't be big on picking up a guy that age either, but for a loan deal (i.e. not stuck with him long-term if he hits a wall) and a guy who wants to prove to his club that he still has what it takes? Not a *whole* lot of downside here, I don't think.

If it's John for 5 and Boa for 5 as rumored in the Standard... it's GREAT work!
    added:

I've said this before and sadly have to say it again..

The outright freaking ignorance and obvious denial of some footy fans as displayed on T-F-I and the Offal is astonishing.

If a player is not happy, you offload him..PERIOD!

Whether the manager is incapable of motivating him is beside the point.. if the manager is going to stay, then the player must go.

Glad I pay attrention to ALL sports.. it's obvious to me.
