I support Columbus Crew, as they are my local team.

And my grandfather was a HUGE Celtic FC fan, so it rubbed off on me.

Other than those ones, that is all. I couldn't see supporting another EPL squad. I will cheer some on depending on who they play. (aka, anyone vs Man. Utd or Chelsea).

Re: RE: Re: RE: Other Squads You Support

I've spent some time in German airports, but ony one proper night in Germany outside of an airport. I like Borussia Dortmund for their colors, but lately, I have been leaning toward the former East German clubs. Since very few are in the Bundesliga, I like Energie Cottbus and the latest this season is Hansa Rostock. I guess I have a soft spot in my heart for the former Communist countries and the cities that were once part of them. I guess it has to do with my wife being Polish.

That leads me to why I chose the Polish clubs I did.

Podbeskidzie Bielsko-Biala is a Polish club I support because my wife was raised there. When we go back to Poland we always stay there and it is a great town.

Lechia Gdansk - where my wife's sister lives and once again it is a great city!

Korona Kielce - my favorite beer in the world, Wojak, is made in Kielce, Poland. Since my other two teams are in the second division, I needed a top division club to cheer for so until one of the two above make it, I cheer for Korona Kielce in the Polish Ekstraklasa.

I always knew we'd get along, omsdogg. FSC still airs a lot of Lazio home games, which makes them easier to follow than some of the other mid-level Serie A teams.

Thanks, Doggie. Interestingly, guys playing for the Hatters last season ARE in the Prem -- Carlos Edwards is with Sunderland, Rowan Vine is with Birmingham, and Steve Howard is with Derby County. So, I guess, in a way, some of my boys made it.

OH, and TofMcB -- you ARE the only one who thinks that Steven Gerrard is the greatest player in the world. Hose yourself off and watch some Kaka highlights, dude!

I am supporting the team at the top in France Le Mans. Do not call me a glory hunter as I jumped on this team since they came back into the league.

I studied abroad for a year in Germany and lived/worked there one summer. I was in the FC Köln catchment area. They are a team with history (they've won the Bundesliga/First Division a handful of times) and they have a large fanbase, even bigger than the more successful Bayer Leverkusen who is their nearest rival (a few miles down river from Cologne).

They are in the 2. Bundesliga right now because they have been incompetently managed by their board of directors (not in a financial way, but a football way). I think a lot of people are confused by how bad things have been there for the last decade or so. Although it is pretty easy to be relegated in Germany even if you are a wealthy team (look what almost happened to Hamburg last year). Bayern is probably the only team that will always be safe (Hertha Berlin might be the team to drop this year).

FC Köln represents not only Germany's fourth largest city Cologne, but most of the area south of Cologne (like Bonn and the Eifel). They draw some of the largest crowds in Germany despite being in the Second Division. Their stadium was newly renovated for the World Cup.

If you are looking for a Bundesliga team to follow it all depends on where you live in Germany, although all of Germany seems to cheer on Bayern Munich in the advanced Champions League stages (I was there when they won their last Champions League... all of Germany celebrated).

Along with St. Pauli which is celebrated for being so advant garde/socialist/leftist/ and immoral (St. Pauli is in the red light district of Hamburg I think), auf Schalke is another unique club that actually attracts fans from all over western Germany. My boss at my job in the Eifel which is south of Cologne near the Belgian border is a Schalke fan and drove the 2 or more hours on the weekend to Gelsenkirchen for their games (he is a season ticket holder). It's a working class team in the heart of the Ruhrgebiet which is that huge industrial/urban area that also includes Essen, Dortmund, Bochum and numerous other small "cities" in the Ruhr river valley. Schalke v. Dortmund is probably Germany's biggest derby, akin to Man U/Liverpool or even Man U/Man City.

By the way auf Schalke means on Schalke. Schalke is a hill and that is where they played football. So that is how they got their name.

The Ruhrgebiet is also Germany's version of the North of England's footballing area where you have bunches of teams within a short distance from one another. Leverkusen, Cologne, and Mönchengladbach are also in the same Bundesstaat (North Rhine-Westphalia) as the Ruhrgebiet teams.

Germany also has two big company teams in Bayer Leverkusen and Wolfsburg. Bayer Leverkusen is home to Bayer (duh!) and Wolfsburg is home to Volkswagen. Without the companies there would be no teams there since both Leverkusen (especially Leverkusen) and Wolfsburg are small places.

Düsseldorf is the one big city without a major team interestingly. They have a team Fortuna Düsseldorf (I think it is still called that) that is in the Regionalliga (3rd Division) and they have a brand new large stadium, but I think they've had some financial issues. They are also near the Ruhrgebiet in North Rhine-Westphalia.

    Other English teams I like:

    Everton (love Goodison Park)
Wigan (because there is no way they should be in the Premiership)
Sheffield Wednesday (love their history, their name, and Hillsborough)
Preston North End (love their history and Deepdale)
Accrington Stanley (history, North of England, small)

    Other teams I like:

Houston Dynamo (where I now live)
    FC Köln (2. Bundesliga currently)

St. Pauli is outside the red light district, but not a far walk from it. I walked to the outskirts of it just to check out all the hubbub, and then turned around when a woman was throwing her husband/bf/whatever's stuff out of the top story window. I'm not kidding.

Although I dont necessarily consider myself avantgarde/socialist/leftist, I really enjoy how their fan base is. Not to make generalizations but most advantgarde/socialist/leftist people usually don't care for sports, so to have such a strong following is really cool.

Colchester United - English ancestors originated from there.

Dumbarton - Scottish ancestors originated from there. They're in the Scottish Third Divison, nice stadium though. Small 2,000 all-seater right by The Rock.

Metrostars - Fuck the Red Bulls, I'm still down with the Metros.

They definitely have a cult following. Their fans are fun. I like the name St. Pauli. Maybe I should say St. Pauli (the area) contains the red light district or is that wrong as well?

Fulham and USA(always support your country!) are on a different level but I do take an interest in ....

Minnesota Thunder-They're my local and I'll always have ample room in my heart for them.

Canada- I'm half Canadian so of course I get behind Canadian teams, when it comes to the soccer the USA was my first team and so they will always be my national team, but I'll certiantly be pulling for Canada in qualifying. I keep an eye open for Toronto but don't support a MLS club, I just like to see the league succeed in general.

Off topic; when I first started watching the prem I would see different admirable qualities in different clubs but the more my Fulham addiction deepens I've come to really despise them all. It would be impossible to support another club in England even if Fulham ceased to exist. My hearts taken, I love everything about this club. Sounds terribly soppy BUT ITS TRUE. @*#& the rest of em!

Werder Bremen: I met a bunch of Bremen fans at the World Cup last year. They were so friendly and hospitable that I adopted Bremen as my own.

1.FC Koln: I spent most of my World Cup trip in Cologne and saw Angola-Portugal there. The stadium was probably half locals and they were singing Viva Colonia throughout the match. I didn't know what the song was until someone explained it to me after the match. He said the locals were disappointed in the level of support from the Angola and Portugal fans, so everyone spontaneously started singing Koln songs. Great spirit and tremendous support, even after being relegated.

And at the risk of being permanently banished, I admit that I don't actually hate Chelsea.

yeah, i noticed last year that they started puttin Serie A matches on again. Lazio has lost a lot of their luster from some of those teams in the 90's, but they still have some players that I like. Simone Inzahgi is the only remaining player from those teams of the past that were so good.

I'm sorry Doggie and nmancini, every time I hear the two words Italian and football used together, this is what immediately leaps to mind.

Yeah, that's very upsetting to me, too, Don. It's another reason my interest has flagged.

In the Bundesliga I'm following Werder Bremen. Mostly because I traced my heritage back to that area and they seem to have some pretty cool fans.
