    thanks, 'fog. I loved that jet also. The only aircraft to be retired despite never having been outperformed. I'd invite you down to SA to go check out the static displayed SR-71 at Lackland, but I figure Dayton is closer and the museum at Wright-Pat should have something there.

    How fast was the SR-71? I was doing a wing check aboard our EC-47 in late 70 or early 71, and the co-pilot spotted one off our right wing on its long take off climb. Because I was looking in that direction, he and I got to see it. By the time the other crew reacted to his sighting, it was long gone. It caused me to pen this little battlefield haiku:

    Near the Parrot's Beak
    I saw a Blackbird climbing.
    Power, glory, gone

    If I were as clever as some, I'd put a picture of it in this thread.
