NYT on 'Where McCain went wrong'

By David Brooks, who laments 'McCain has been held in a GOP straitjacket'.

here's the money paragraph:

Oh, how EASY it is to note a fact and blame it on the wrong influences.

Yes, to take an example, let's look at 'Campaign Finance Reform

NO, using the above example it resulted in McCain-Feingold.

The only 'conservatism behind the times' is the same conservatism that liberals align with. Isolationism and Market Protection.

In the same vein Brooks uses Palin as a stalking horse to show McCain's under the thrall of same old conservative values. This of course depends on the hit jobs on Palin.

Brooks implies that McCain might have won or been closer in the race if someone else were the running mate.

That is patently false. Before Palin, most conservatives planned to sit it out. To be fair, Romney would have been the BEST selection on the face of it, I cannot explain why some people couldn't see past their noses on his real credentials.
But what irks the East Coast elite is that Palin is, like {somewhat}McCain and Obama, a Populist. Romney is decidedly not, no matter his family values.

No... what good would it have been if McCain ran an 'honorable' campaign and lost by 15 points? As it is, McCain AND Palin have not been hard enough on the very issues that did them in. Media Scrutiny of the candidates.
