I don't believe we've covered this territory here, but a particular hockey game tonight is prompting me to ask: what sports team do you hate/despise/loathe more than any other? I'm talking about the kind of team when you find a special kind of happiness in their failures. The kind of team where you actually question the mental stability of anyone who actually likes them.

We can skip Chelsea, as we'll all have that in common.

For me, my first love in sports is the Los Angeles Kings. So the team whose very existence baffles me is the Anaheim Ducks. A completely superfluous franchise founded as part of a failed experiment inspired by a movie starring the kid from Dawson's Creek. It's hard not to view them as a joke.

Why would anyone of sound mind like them? I simply cannot comprehend it.

Of course, being a Boston sports fan and DC United supporter this list makes perfect sense:

    1. New York Yankees (and I married a Yankees fan!)
    2. LA Lakers
    3. NY Jets
    4. NY Red Bulls

I know I should dislike the Montreal Canadiens because I am a Bruins fan, but I don't mind them, I actually really respect their organization. My grandmother was a huge Montreal fan. Even though she would always harp on the fact the Bruins did Bobby Orr wrong, I always watched or listened to the Canadiens' games with her anyways.

Growing up in Houston durning the 90s and my first love being baseball, I hate the cardinals. I mean I really hate them. They beat the Astros the first game I ever went to when I was 5, well first game that I remember anyway.
I equally hate the university of Oklahoma. I hope they lose every game they play, in every sport they have a team. As my grampa would say "i don't want their chess team to be successful." Reasons I hate OU are simply as follows, I am a Longhorn fan and they can't find any talent in Oklahoma so they find a team of Texan traitors who don't have the decency to at least go to A&M and stay instate.

No other teams generate so much hate for me but here are a few others I strongly dislike.

Texas rangers, I moved to fort worth in 2004 and there were only a handful of ranger fans. Now they're everywhere and I'm sick of them.

Philadelphia Eagles, I grew up a Cowboys fan.

Ohio state, this one is more of a pet peeve/annoyance. I just hate the whole "I'm from THE Ohio state university."

A lot of hate in my sports heart, maybe I should repent? Nah :)

I find that my sports "hate" has cooled as I've gotten older. Except when it comes to the Yankees. Grew up an Orioles fan and from the winning, to the money and looting others teams' players, to their (largely) arrogant, jackass fans, I can't stand them.

In football, I started out as a Baltimore Colts fan as a little guy. After they ducked out in the middle of the night, I hated them for a long time but that eventually cooled. I wound up becoming a Cowboys and Ravens fan, so I dislike the Redskins, Giants & Steelers the most.

I'm a lifelong Caps fan in hockey. Early on it was the Flyers and Islanders. But the Isles went down the toilet for 30 yrs and it's shifted more to the Penguins and Rangers over time.

Unlike most Aggies, I don't hate UT. Living in San Antonio, I have more friends that are Longhorns these days than Aggies, despite going to school there. We moved to Texas as transplants when I was 11 & I never picked a side until I enrolled at A&M. So for me, it's just a fun rivalry. The two college programs I hate the most would be Notre Dame football & Duke basketball.

Most of my hatreds are based on the rival of who I like:
Like the Eagles - Hate the Cowboys
Like FSU - Hate Florida (although shamefully I have to admit I've developed a soft spot for Tim Tebow after he graduated - what's wrong with me?!)
Like Carlisle High School - Hate Cumberland Valley

The one exception is Duke. I kinda like Wake Forest and North Carolina, but not strongly enough to explain my hatred of Duke. Every time I have to select them as advancing in my final four bracket I throw up a little in my mouth.

You stole my list or read my mind (except the part about being married to a Yankees fan).

In the end it was not the Bruins but Bobby's laywer/agent Alan Eagleson. He outright lied to Orr and told him the Blackhawks had given a better offer On top of a great contract the Bruins had offered him they also offered him part ownership of the team. For years after he retired Orr would still attend Bruins games, walking right by the Bruins executive suite and not even look in, thinking the Bruins wronged him. Harry Sinden the Bruins GM was dumbfounded as to why Orr never took the deal and treated the organization that way. The have now reconciled. It was well over 10 years after he retired that the full story came out. Eagleson was a piece of work is now disbarred and a convicted criminal for all the athletes he wronged in other matters such has improprieties in the NHLPA pension plan. Read up on him on Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Eagleson

She mostly blamed them for shortening his career by letting him play with his bad knees. "They ran him into the ground!!!" Ugh, I can still hear her say that.

Let's see, growing up and living in Minnesota (I took a small 13 year hiatus in SoCal...who can blame me?), I'd say this list is pretty common among folks up here:

We Viking fans loathe the Packers. There is no one worse. We can't stand Lambeau Field, cheeseheads, that stupid "Go Pack Go" chant. the colors green and yellow together. Yeah, the hate is strong in us for the Packers. We also don't like the Cowboys for giving us Hershel Walker and stealing all of our draft picks that scored them a few Super Bowls. Wait, that stupid move was on us. Nevermind. Viking fans also secretly have a soft spot for Buffalo Bills fans for joining us in the 0 for 4 club in Super Bowls wins/appearances.

As a Twins fan, we used to dislike the Brewers, but then they went to the National League and we only see them for a home and home series once per year, so our spite has been redirected to the Chicago White Sox. Although it's tepid at best compared to the above.

As a Timberwolves fan...well...we're not very good so it's hard to have a rivalry with anyone. I suppose, I shouldn't like the Lakers since they originated in Minneapolis (seriously, LA has no lakes!), but after spending a bunch of years out there, I have a nice affinity for the purple and gold.

I'm not really a hockey fan (imagine that living in Minnesota), so I'm going to pass on that one.

And as a college sports fan, the Gophers main rival is, of course, the Badgers. I would say this is this rivalry comes in second to the Vikings-Packers, but only in college football really. I don't see much in basketball or other sports.

And, finally (sorry for the long winded response), since we are in March Madness time, Georgetown because every time I pick them to advance in the tournament they lose in the first round, and every time I pick them to lose in the first round, they advance. They are my bracket nemesis. And finally, Duke because they are Duke.

This is a tough one for me, because my primary allegiance since boyhood has been to Tex's most hated, the St. Louis Cardinals. I just can't hate the Cubs, no matter how hard I try. I DO hate the Yankees, because they're the only team who has more World Series championships than we do. That, and they garner WAY too much media attention just by being the top dog in New York. Plus they have too many bandwagon fans out in the rest of the country. I kind of feel the same way about the Dodgers and, to a slightly lesser extent, the Giants. The Dodgers get too much love for the same reasons as the Yankees, although I don't hate them as much because they've only won six rings to our eleven. I don't think they'll catch us in my lifetime, but I hate losing to them in the playoffs.
Soccer-wise, it's easy...the Scum are just so full of themselves, and their supporters suck. Pride of London my ass. Their owner is a legal Russian gangster. Don't really care for ManUre or Scousers, either. They've won enough, although I do like Brendan Rodgers.
College hoops is a bit easier. When I was a kid, Tennessee always gave Kentucky fits at Stokely Athletic Center when Ray Mears was the coach. He'd slow it down, take UK out of their running game and spring too many upsets for my liking. And I don't like the Gators. I hate the back to back Donovan champs. They're a FOOTBALL school, dammit. Might as well throw in North Carolina. Despite his recent passing, I'll never forgive Dean Smith for the four corners. Made the game unwatchable for me when they used it. Thank goodness for the shot clock.
Don't have strong feelings about the NFL, but I've never cared for the Steelers. They also seem to have a lot of bandwagon fans in far flung places that have no connection to Pittsburgh or Western Pennsylvania whatsover.
The Broad Street Bullies. Remember them? Hated them. And still hate the Flyers. They were talented, but they relied too much on intimidation and dirty, dangerous tactics. Not good for kids to emulate. Conversely, the 1980-83 New York Islanders were a joy to watch. Bossy, Goring, Trottier, Potvin, Smith, Morrow, Gillies, Langevin, the Sutters, etc., etc,.
But I don't hate the Cubs.

Football: in addition to Chelsea there's AC Milan [or AC Mafia a I like to call them] and Real Madrid. Both clubs are corrupt with corrupt ownership and -- like Chelsea -- smile dotingly on the racist criminal behavior of their supporters. Close on to this is Paris St. Germain who is also guilty of this crap, but … hey, they're French so it's not like I care so much.

Pointy football: Washington Foreskins -- partially because of their racist name, but also because they have the most irritating and front-running fans I ever met. It amazed me to see how the Colts fans I dealt with in the 70s, became Redskin fans in the early 80s, and then claimed they'd ALWAYS been fans. College? I'm not nuts about teams that I see as chronically overrated -- USC Notre Dame, Alabama, Michigan, Ohio State -- but I care very little about college football anyhow, so. I used to despise Clemson, but now that UMd is in the Big 10 … .High School? Sandia Hi in Albuquerque. We cleaned their fucking clock each of the three years I attended Highland Hi, but 50 years later I still want to see them go 0-11.

Basketball: I have a problem here. I spent a long time creating a dislike for UNC and NCState, but now Maryland is in the Big 10 whose teams I've admired for a long time for the type of b-ball they favor. NBA? I support the greatest team in the history of the game, so it would be unseemly to pick one or more of the also-rans to pick on.

Baseball: New York Yankees -- I am sick of their entitlement, and the slavish devotion ESPN and Fox holds for them. Boston Red Sox -- the smuggest fans of any sport. I still haven't gotten over their universal belief that all baseball fans rejoiced in them ending their World Series drought. Chicago Cubs: a bunch of entitled upper class yuppies whose owners have no incentive to improve the franchise. Why should they, when plastic people fill that beautiful stadium regardless.

With the exception of USA woman's soccer, the entirety of the summer and winter olympics.

Hockey: I had a 10 year flirtation with the NHL playoffs, but then boredom set it. I couldn't tell you the names of more than one player on any of the franchises. It IS a great sport though.

Jump, in a previous life I hosted a TV show that interviewed famous Pennsylvanians. I had the chance to interview a couple people in the Steelers organization. At the time they were a division rival of my favorite team, the Jaguars, but I could feel nothing but respect for the people in the organization. Dan Rooney was even a good sport when I thanked him for insisting the '95 expansion teams got off to a good start - good enough to allow the Jags to get their first home win ever vs his Steelers.

Anyway, my main point is that I heard from multiple people that the Steelers have a national presence because of the diaspora of Pittsburgh residents after the steel industry collapsed. I'm not sure if that is true, because if so, where are all the Pirates fans, but it seems like a good explanation to me.

No hard feelings jump, cardinals are a great organization and my Astros are trying with Jeff luhnow to build a team and basically be like the cardinals. For the most part I love cardinal fans, just hate but very much respect the team. Weren't the 2004 and 2005 NLCS' fun to watch?

Some great choices here. Loving all the hate.

Agree on Ohio State. Not just because of, as FulhamTx points out, the obnoxious way they say the school's name, but also because they're lousy cheats.

I also dislike the Lakers and relish seeing them some 25 games behind the Clippers in the standings.

Oh yeah, I forgot THE Ohio State University. Should be in the dictionary margin next to the definition of "obnoxious."

Any sporting event Arizona State is playing at the given time. Also have disdain for USC football (Trojan fans are unbearable).

Baseball: As a Halo fan it has to be Oakland, Texas, Boston (sorry Jim and Heather) but Sox fans are easily the most obnoxious of any visiting team by a long way and yes that includes Yanks fans, and the Dodgers (mostly because Dodger fans tend to be obsessed w/Lil' Brother down the 5 freeway and Halo fans find great humor in it).

NFL: As a Seahawks fan, it was always the rest of the AFC West (KC, Denver, Raiders), but now that the Hawks have been in the NFC for 15 years or so, it's the Forty-Whiners, Forty-Whiners, and um...The Forty-Whiners.

NBA: Was a wee lad in Portland when Bill Walton was the best player on Planet Earth for a brief moment, before his feet betrayed him (now he just sounds like he's from another planet on commentary). So the arch rivalry was with the Sonics, and the hatred was also for the Lakers. To say I enjoy the downfall of the Fake Show from close proximity is an understatement.

There are teams I always root against, but when it comes down to teams I hate:

    1. LA Lakers
    2. LA Lakers
