RE: Crew: 1 of 3 aint bad?

I can't believe I am already typing this but Ljungberg could miss up to three months.

The good news is the three months starts now not at the beginning of the season.

Ugh. I guess it takes all kinds here at FUSA. This is like reading reports of the machinations of the comings and goings at KFC, Burger King, or other fast food restaurants.

"Did you hear about the great fry cook they got up the street? Yeah, but the PM Manager at Taco Bell brings years of experience with him. I think we still have to consider them the favorites, even if they are next to the mall."

And looking through the comments, it seems like its another debate about field turf and grass and all that BS. And a lot of people are already writing off the signing of Ljungberg as a failure even though he hasn't even played yet and will be back after probably only missing about 2 games. Add that to the fact that its a MULTI-year contract. Bad news but good news. Hopefully the surgery alleviates all his nagging injuries.

Hey. There was a draft today.

All the picks made are here at MLSNet. I think it made sense for the Red Bulls to draft midfielders (Hall's a left midfielder/winger. He could replace VDB eventually?) and defenders.

A little stunned to see that the first draft pick was Zakauni.

Okay, as it turned out it was a different guy.

Zakuani is all over the seattle soccer blog/website scene. From his interviews I've been pretty impressed. Hopefully he's a future prolific goal scorer and speaking of prolific goal scorers,

It looks like Freddy Montero will report to Seattle for training camp while waiting for the results of the bid from Real Betis http://gosounders.com/2009/01/15/freddy ... fc-almost/

I think Celtic is a bad move for Sascha. The SPL is too physical for both his build and style of play.

And now ESPN is moving from Thursday nights.

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/s ... =si_soccer

On the one hand, this is good for me, because Thursday night is HatterMom TV night, and the only footie I got to watch was left coast stuff. We still only have one TV in case you were wondering. On the other hand,

    a. won't having the "match of the week" on a different night each week make it easier to miss games?
    b. won't have "live programming" rather than "taped programming" result in a lot of games that are only partially broadcast? I'm thinking of ESPN's Stanley Cup/MLB double headers in the 90s. I saw a lot of exciting sudden death overtime hockey followed by games beginning in the 4th inning.

    Just wondering.

ESPN doesn't care, they plan on bidding for the EPL broadcasting rights.

It's probably means more MLS games on FSC, but otherwise... :shrugs:

DeRo signs a four year contract w/Toronto

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/s ... =si_soccer

If he plays it out, he'll be the most talented player in MLS history never to have had a shot in Europe. He's 30 now, so I don't see him leaving. Since Deuce left, he's been the best player in the league, bar none.

I hope the Dax McCarty deal to SJ isn't dead as he'd fit nicely into the imperial designs ongoing in Quake-land.

Whitesbhoy will get Earthquake fever (not to be confused with the Pac Man strain) when he moves to the bay area. I'll personally see to it that he attends at least two matches. That's right, two whole matches!!!!! And I hope WB has the opportunity to catch a match before a new stadium is built - visiting the Santa Clara grounds is akin to Kettering Town on a weekly basis.

God bless Sigi, but... signing on to be Chelskum's whipping post at THIS time?

At least that's my first reaction.

In related news, AP story on Seattle's 'First Class Operation'

Still, as the Dispatch's Shawn Mitchell reminds us.. 'Plastic Grass'!

In other news, Sigi hired Ezra Hendrickson, recently retired from Crew as an assistant. Go figger.. Sigi brought him to Columbus in the first place.

Crew named former crew player Ricardo Iribarren as assistant over Marcelo Carrera another former player.
    - Dispatch

Carrera, who stayed in NE Ohio in various coaching and academy roles and was a confidant of GBS, will surely be disappointed. After his brief stint with the Crew, he retained close ties since, and did Spanish language radio of the games.

Don, I see your point. You're saying best MLS veteran player. And I agree... in fact I always rated hin just a half-notch higher than Dempsey.

But surely you dont rank him above GBS and Beckham, and -arguably- Blanco.

Oooops! Just ran across an old Ives thread about Tony Sanneh joining the Gals' preseason camp.

Jeezzz, Bruce. Doesn't the scouting book have a column for LRC?
    {'Locker Room Cancer' to you newbies.}

How the F are you going to sweep out the deadwood if you keep bringing more in?

And to think I once plumped for Arena to manage Fulham... whatta idgit!

Watching a Quakes home match on ESPN, I noticed the obvious coziness of the stadium. You are damn right that I will be taking you up on that offer!!

I usually only wear blue for the Red, White & Blue, but I leave open the possibility of "for the Quakes" as well.
