In last week's chat, Steve Goff of the Washington Post said we might see BMB in China:

Washington, D.C.: Is there any way Bradley can convince Brian McBride to come out of retirement for 2010? We need him.

Steven Goff: You just might see McBride filling one of the overage roster spots on the under-23 (Olympic) team this summer in China. However, I don't think he's interested in resuming his national team career over the long haul.

There's something about McBride. I don't know. I always feel like a 12 year old boy whenever I watch him play. There's a part of me way back in my memory bank that wants to go out into the playground of El Paso, Texas and do a pickup soccer game, first telling everyone "ok, I'm McBride."

    Where will McBride end up?

Actually mean HOW will Brian end up playing for the Fire, of course.

Toronto has his rights, under 'discovery' rule. Sounds silly, but that's how it works. But, first he has to sign a contract with MLS. If it's for more than $400,000 that would make him a 'Designated Player', with the excess exempt from the salary cap.

Brian aint gonna play for Toronto and TFC knows that. They've started talking with the Fire on arrangements, since Fire have no DP slots available.

POSSIBLE that Brian would sign for under 400,000 which makes DP moot. It's a matter of 'transition', $350,000 while you're lining up your life as a 'civilian' might seem a pretty good deal.
    - Now, this is what it's really about. Brian is starting his transition to his REAL LIFE.

But the Fire are 'on fire' right now and have a settled team tied for 1st in the East.. actually first in MLS.

The only other team Brian might consider is Columbus, though rumor has it Dina didnt like living in Columbus (Dublin) all that much. Problem being Crew ALSO have a 'settled team' and are in the tie for first. Better financials for him returning for Crew, though... would maybe net 4,000 additional ticket sales.

Dont think for a minute he would move his family back to Cols, though.

Petty, thanks for the post about Toronto's rights to McBride. I thought I had heard them mention this on FSC Thursday night. This could mean he could end up on any MLS team assuming he was ok with it, right?

Well, MLS team rights are only paper tigers anyhow. If Brian wants to play in Chicago, the league will make it happen, much as they did when Donovan wanted to play for the Galaxy. Having Brian playing where he wants is good for the league.

I just wish he still wanted to play in SW6.

Me too. I hope he has spent some time in the Bay Area in the past. Maybe....well I am dreaming now...but the Earthquakes could use a good striker. :)

Chicago have the neccessary trade pieces to make it happen, but there isn't too much of a rush since the MLS transfer window doesn't open up until mid-July.

It will be kind of strange to see Blanco and Mcbride playing for the same side, but an interesting combo nonetheless...

My favorite line from the ESPN column:

"From the league PR standpoint, this is a 5-nil win. McBride is a poster boy, a home-grown soccer hero. He's talented, lovable, huggable and ruggedly handsome. He rescues kitten from trees in his spare time -- unless he's too busy helping the neighborhood kids with their homework."

    Couldn't have said it better.

Which means nada. They are also reporting (with the same possibility rating, a whopping 3) that Paul Dickov is coming to RBNY . . . N-N-N-N-N-NOT HAPPENIN!

Chicago deal should come to a close, it's just a question of what they will get. Chicago are being a bunch of bitches, they think they are going to get an allocation to bring one of the USA's best strikers home for next to nothing.

MLS Rumors is crap. Bill Archer on Crew BS says so, and he's usually right.

The idea of MLSR being if you throw enough darts you're bound to hit a target once in a while. IOW, they're in the tradition of the brit text sites.
That's not to denigrate one who quotes them, btw.. falls under 'concensus knowledge building'.

I know that most of what is reported on MLS-Rumors is crap and I ignore anything with a 3 rating but everything I have seen them post with a 5 rating has eventually happened. If you scroll down the page from where they are reporting that Conde is the man going to Toronto as a 3 they are reporting with a 5 rating that McBride is going to Chicago and the final deal is awaiting approval at MLS headquarters.

Didn't think that you were doing any such thing PF. In fact, I will freely admit that my experience with MLS-Rumors is very short and if this turns out to be bad info I will devalue the credibility of their 5 rating in my little credibility book.

Has it been hot in Toronto because I think Gareth Wheeler has suffered some form of heat stroke or sun poisoning that is causing him to be delusional. I know that we as fans sometimes get a little overreaching in hoping our team can somehow manage to corral a star player but I cannot imagine any package of players that Chicago/Toronto would be willing to trade that would entice Houston to let go of DeRosario.

Do you think he forgot to check the standings and didn't notice that since DeRo has returned to form that Houston has climbed out of the cellar into third place. Perhaps he was busy celebrating the Canadian National teams play this weekend instead of watching Houston's uninspired performance while DeRo sat on the sidelines. Perhaps Mr. Wheeler just had some white space to fill in the Toronto Sun but I think he should have himself examined just to make sure.

Toronto and Chicago strike a deal?

The lengthy battle between the Chicago Fire and Toronto FC for Brian McBride's rights is over.

MLS commissioner Don Garber revealed at halftime of the MLS All-Star Game that the matter had been resolved between Toronto and Chicago, though no details of a deal were revealed. A source with knowledge of the trade discussions told SBI late on Thursday night that a deal has been agreed to, though details of the trade were unavailable.

The Chicago Tribune's Luis Arroyave is reporting that the framework for a deal is in place, but it has not been agreed to yet.

One potential deal I heard of on Wednesday involved Toronto getting a package including Chad Barrett and either a draft pick or allocation. Toronto had been interested in Justin Mapp and Chris Rolfe, but the club's desperate need for forward help may force Mo Johnston to accept a deal involving Barrett. I haven't received confirmation on that being the deal, but I have heard that it was an offer that was being discussed.

As for speculation that MLS forced a trade to happen, I have not heard anything suggesting that MLS stepped in to broker a deal.

McBride is currently with the U.S. Olympic Team, which will depart for Hong Kong on Friday for a pair of Olympic tune-up matches against Ivory Coast and Cameroon. McBride could join the Chicago Fire between mid to late August, depending on how far the United States advances in the Olympics. The Americans open Olympic play on Aug. 7 against Japan.
