Folks, here in Texas the polls have been open since last Monday. By Tuesday afternoon of this week, 1.2 million Texans had voted early. Here in San Antonio, we've broken our all time 1-day early voting record FOUR times by now.

The weather has been conducive here in South Texas, and people have been anxious to get 'er done. I don't know what it's like where you are, but GET OFF YOUR ASSES AND VOTE. Many of you have only lived in the United States and have no clear idea of how amazing our system is, and how incredibly lucky we are to live under it. Cliches become cliches because they are essentially true, so here's one for you: Ben Franklin said we had a democracy "if we could keep it." So make a friggin' difference ... get out and vote. We can appeal all we want to God to bless America, but if it's going to be around after the entirty of this current mess has played itself out, then we're going to have to do our bit.

    Thin kew!

Anybody have an idea the breakdown of early voters?

I gather it is predominantly Dems. Early voting being a relatively new phenomenon, I would think conservatives would be least likely to use it. Progress is a bitch, ain't it.

Actually, what I saw was mostly voters my age and older -- that is folks for whom "change" is a four-letter word, especially during times of turmoil. I would be surprised to discover that a significant number of "young, energized first-time voters" were flocking to the polls early. Most of the young folks I know -- politically savvy though they were -- had to be reminded to get registered or even to check out the paper for the location of their polling places during the most recent primaries.

Where do you get your gathering from?

Just a hunch. Energized and motivated don't really describe McCain or Republicans in my book. Bitter and angry, yes.

But, again, a new twist on the old practice of voting, I think not for the conservative crowd. You may or may not have voted for McCain, Don. But your progressive. And I don't imagine you are the only gray-haired progressive living in the Lone Star State.

Wouldn't being an open-minded, "progressive" sort of person run contrary to stereotyping damn near 1/2 of the voting population? Moreso, given that conservatives have one of the highest percentages of voter turnout than any other demographic in the last decade (or more)? I'd say there's ample evidence to suggest they're able to grasp and utilize a wide array of voting options.

Today is the last day of early voting down here in shitkicker paradise. As of COB yesterday, more than 330k had voted early. Even without the last day totals, 2008 broke the previous early voting totals for Bexar County by close to 100k.

While people are increasingly more comfortable with early voting as time goes on, I think that the major factor in the huge turnaround has been the amazingly pleasant weather we're enjoying.

My only regret in having voted last Tuesday is that, just like pledging for public radio and television, voting early doesn't stop the commercials.

Everything should be known by Wednesday morning of next week. Should be interesting.

heh... what's not said about the 'bitter' Republican grass roots is the fact the bitterness is because they brought this on themselves. They're the ones who voted for the insiders who got corrupted.
    Like Ted Stevens.

Well, I didnt and maybe Ohio4fulham didnt in 06 either... I skipped right over the Gov and Dewine/senate boxes. So I didnt vote FOR Strickland or Sherrod Brown.

But they vote. In droves. Whereas our youth's electoral behavior can best be described as, "Dude, where's my voting precinct?"

Campaign Ramblings.. just cause I can

I'm sure we will all be glad to see this election over and done with.

Here's a irony. The second system I designed as a tech for Big Corp, hired as Engineer for a startup... in 1973, a '4 line' political message 'robo-caller'. Operator had to dial the # then push button to play the message when someone answered. The message I used in my tests was an actual recording by Woody Hayes. Now i hang up on 'em. Actually did then, too.

I will most likely be personally better off economically under Obama's rule. Make that almost CERTAINLY. My kids... another story.

Whoever is elected will be a one-termer. I guaran-damn-tee it.

Much as I hoped the Obama selection out of primary, and his election tomorrow would help put the racial issue behind us, I'm afraid it's only going to make the issue more strident.

No matter what the media wonk idiots say, Palin has not hurt McCain's election chances and I can prove it. Except to those who want to ignore the obvious.

    Or....maybe not so silly.

Just got off the telli with me mum. She lives in Beaufort, South Carolina (for those who don't know anything about the Marines, think "Officer and a Gentleman" or "The Great Santini". Needless to say, conservative would be putting it mildly). Apparently in ol' Beaufort, the locals think early voting is a conspiracy, and those votes won't count. They even have been covering that perspective in and on the local news.

I ain't saying they are wrong, but.................

It'll be interesting to see -- barring a parallel universe visit -- how you could do that. Although I'm sure you could prove it in your mind.

My last word on the campaign. McCain's advisers need to be put out to pasture. The PUMA idiots had a shelf life shorter than a list of Guiliani's qualifications for president. Whover told him that these disaffected Hillaryites would vote Republican if any woman got on the ticket is stupider than they think Hillary supporters are. For some odd reason, the idea in McCain '08 became to run to the extremes and to abandon the center. So, we stopped hearing about McCain's policies and only heard his fear-mongering and his sneering.

When McCain named Palin, he lost his BIGGEST edge over Obama, that of experience. With one or two exceptions, there's not a lot of difference between Obama/McCain on the economy, foreign relations, and Iraq/Afghanistan. That being the case, the natural inclination is to go with someone who:

    a. has been tested under pressure.
    b. doesn't waste his time talking about unspecific "change"
    c. has demonstrated his willingness to cross the aisle to look for consensus.

This is exactly what the American people -- especially those in the middle --wanted. What they DIDN'T want was 6-10 weeks of "Obama the Socialist, Obama the Terrorist Friend" and repeated denigration of community volunteers and the 80% of us who DON'T live in rural communities.

McCain had the election going his way until, somebody in his campaign convinced him to run to the right -- i.e. forget logic, and just spew innuendo. I still have hopes of him winning tomorrow, because I still think he's better prepared to lead the country and more likely to work with a Democratic Congress to our overall benefit. But it's appearing more and more likely that when faced with the opportunity to run the table in a campaign that highlighted his strengths, he was instead persuaded to appeal to the fringe idiots who have trashed the conservatism that he so much believes in.

    Sad, sad, sad.

heh.... Way to bloviate, Don. Here it is... Not opinion, not spin. FACT.

    google trends: sarah palin

    google trends: donate mccain

    google trends: volunteer mccain

What I'd like to know, though, is how YOU know PUMA has no effect on the election. I can't say for sure they have any noticeable effect and I've been reading both their big sites for months... it may be huge, it may just be a couple hundred thousand. We wont know for sure until the votes are counted.
And how does that square with your McCain will win prediction? For him to win, he'd HAVE to have a big PUMA vote.

'fog. Just cause some things trend up at the same time doesn't mean there's a cause and effect relationship.

Palin was announced about the same time that the call for donations and volunteers hit full gear; i.e., at the normal point in the election cycle when such things occur.

Let's look at some poll numbers on the issue:
