Fulham set to make move for West Ham striker Carlton Cole in January transfer window

West Ham do not want to sell Cole as they push for promotion from the Championship and are attempting to strengthen their own strike-force.
On Thursday they had an offer of £3.25 million rejected by Cardiff City for Peter Whittingham, having already failed with a bid of £3 million for Huddersfield Town striker Jordan Rhodes.
Cardiff have warned clubs they will not sell Whittingham, 27, while Huddersfield have issued a similar rebuff for Rhodes, 21, who has scored 20 goals in 20 League One matches this season and become a full Scotland international.
It is understood that West Ham will now turn to other transfer targets and are considering two other strikers, but are not going to let Cole go having already rejected a £4 million bid last August from Galatasaray for the 28-year-old England international.
Fulham manager Martin Jol is, nevertheless, a long-time admirer of Cole and attempted to sign him when the Dutchman was in charge of Tottenham Hotspur.

Catania chief executive Pietro Lo Monaco claims the club have received an offer for Argentine forward Maxi Lopez from Fulham.

The South American is expected to head for pastures new during the January transfer window, with a number of clubs reported to be chasing his signature.

It is believed that the former Barcelona forward would prefer to remain in Serie A after enjoying a productive spell with Catania.

Fiorentina are among those believed to be keen, with the Viola having agreed to offload Alberto Gilardino to Genoa.

There is, however, a chance that Maxi could be lured away from Italy, with Fulham keen to take him to England.

Evaluating

Martin Jol has been linked with a number of strikers over recent weeks and Catania claim the Dutchman has made the first move for Maxi.

"On Maxi Lopez there are no developments as yet, but an offer has been received from Fulham and we are evaluating it," Lo Monaco told Radio Mana Mana.

"We are waiting to see what the Italian clubs will do.

"AC Milan are definitely out, while we will see what happens with Fiorentina. Lazio? I don't think they need Maxi."

Premier League Fulham could scupper Leicester City's attempt to land Doncaster Rovers striker Billy Sharp.

City have agreed a fee – believed to be £1.85 million – for the 25-year-old hitman, but the Mercury understands that Cottagers boss Martin Jol is now weighing up a bid.

Sharp is also attracting the interest of several Championship clubs, but would love the chance of playing in the top-flight.

Fulham are believed to view Sharp as a possible replacement for Andy Johnson, who is out of contract in the summer and has yet to agree a new deal.

They have already rejected a bid from QPR with Blackburn also monitoring his situation.

If Fulham decide against pursuing their interest, though, City still look to be in the driving seat as it looks increasingly unlikely that Sharp will sign a new deal at the Keepmoat Stadium.

Sharp met with Rovers manager Dean Saunders on Tuesday night and was offered a two-and-a-half year deal which would make him the highest-paid player in the club's history.

He will now think over the move, but Rovers know there is already a bigger offer on the table from City, and the prospect of continuing interest, as the ending of the January transfer window draws nearer.

Despite the mounting speculation about a Sharp exit, Doncaster expect the striker to feature for them in Saturday's Championship clash against Cardiff.

He sprung to prominence at Scunthorpe when he scored 53 goals in just 82 appearances, but was less successful at Sheffield United following a £2m move, scoring just eight times in 51 games before joining Rovers for just over £1m in 2010.

He averages a goal every two games for Rovers.

FULHAM have told Celtic target Rafik Halliche he’s free to leave Craven Cottage.
The Algerian was on trial with the Hoops last month and boss Neil Lennon has been has watching his progress.
Now he knows Fulham will not put obstacles in his way if he wants to land the 25-year-old.
Cottagers boss Martin Jol said: “I have five centre-backs. Rafik’s a good player but I haven’t used him.
“He told me at the start of the season he needs to play and it’s the same story now.”
Halliche has made just one appearance from the bench for Fulham and has failed to feature at all since Dutchman Jol took over last summer.
Crystal Palace are also keen to capture Halliche.

Maxi Lopez bid fail

Catania have rejected an offer for star striker Maxi Lopez from Fulham after it was deemed unacceptable.

Maxi has been linked with a move away from Sicily during the January transfer window. Several clubs, including AC Milan, are interested in Lopez, but Catania have rejected the only firm declaration of interest in the striker from Fulham.

"We didn't accept Fulham's offer for Maxi Lopez because the English club wanted to get the player without spending one euro,'' Catania club administrator Pietro Lo Monaco told http://www.tuttomercatoweb.it. "We will not loan him. Maxi has an important value.''

Milan are set to renew their interest in the 27-year-old, with the Rossoneri unlikely to land Manchester City forward Carlos Tevez. Milan confirmed last month they were keen on Lopez but their top target in the winter transfer market was Tevez.

The Italian champions pulled out of negotiations for Tevez but they want to strengthen their attacking line with Antonio Cassano sidelined indefinitely after undergoing a heart procedure last year.

Sky Sports understands Fulham are set to tie up a deal for Aberdeen youngster Jack Grimmer.

Fulham have lined up a move for highly-rated Grimmer after he turned down a new deal at Pittodrie.

Dons boss Craig Brown was keen to keep Grimmer at the club, but Fulham have managed to lure him to England

Grimmer's current deal expires at the end of the season and Fulham were ready to sign the midfielder on a pre-contract.

However, Fulham have now moved to bring Grimmer to Craven Cottage this month rather than wait until he sees out his contract in the summer.

Grimmer, who became the youngest player in Aberdeen's history when he made his debut against Rangers in April 2010 aged 16 and two months, is believed to have travelled to London to finalise his move to Fulham.

The west Londoners have yet to make a formal bid but made contact with the Midlands club at the end of last week to register their interest in the Nigeria international.

Fulham are willing to pay £3 million plus performance-related add-ons for the 30-year-old but West Brom value the player at the £5m mark.

With doubts surrounding the futures of Bobby Zamora and Andy Johnson, manager Martin Jol wants to reinforce his squad with a new striker this month.

Fulham had lined up Marseille’s Andre-Pierre Gignac after agreeing a fee with the French club but the player’s wage demands appear to have scuppered the deal.

Jol is also an admirer of Championship pair Nicky Maynard and Robert Snodgrass but is believed to now favour a move for Odemwingie, who has a proven goalscoring pedigree at the top level and has the mobility and pace that he wants from a centre forward.

Fulham have also been encouraged by rumours that West Brom manager Roy Hodgson has a poor relationship with Odemwingie and is willing to listen to offers for the striker, who scored 15 Premier League goals in his debut season but has followed up with only four in 17 league games this term.

Odemwingie’s future was thrown in doubt last November after Hodgson claimed Albion had got “nothing” out of the player this season, adding he was “difficult to work out”.

Although Hodgson has since claimed he is not looking to sell Odemwingie, it is understood he will allow the former Lille and Lokomotiv Moscow striker to leave if West Brom’s valuation is matched.

Coincidentally, Hodgson is also closely monitoring Bristol City’s Maynard and is expected to move for the 25-year-old if he sells Odemwingie.

There is a growing acceptance among Fulham senior officials that Zamora, who turned 31 on Monday, is for sale at the right price, believed to be around the £5m mark.

Sunderland and QPR have showed the most serious interest in the striker, but the bad blood that exists between owner Mohamed Al-Fayed and former Fulham boss Mark Hughes has made the Craven Cottage club reluctant to sell to Rangers, who have also had a bid rejected for Andy Johnson.

There has been contact between the two clubs and the Robins are hoping to tie up a deal to bring the England Under-21 international, pictured, to Ashton Gate on loan until the end of the season. A left-back who can also operate in the centre of defence and on the wing, 20-year-old Briggs could be on board in time for Saturday's crucial home npower Championship relegation battle against Doncaster Rovers.

Heather, the loaning process and it's precise workings have always confused me (especially when it concerns the players wages), but I'm pretty sure the club can work it out where in case of injury Briggs can be recalled (ala Stockdale).

A mid-game injury to Riise would put us in a bind, my guess is Jol would move Duff back there and bring in a mid. Bairdinho has been a mystery, he was out for an extended time due to undisclosed personal reasons. Haven't even heard his name in transfer talks either so I don't think there has been a fall-out w/Jol. Hopefully he can fight his way back into the starting XI if Kelly falters.

Latest on a Maxi Lopez deal

There are reports that Fulham have accepted Maxi Lopez’s personal terms, but Milan are still hoping to snatch the Catania striker.

It was already confirmed last week that Fulham had made an offer for the Argentine, thought to be worth €1.5m for the six-month loan plus a mandatory option to buy for €9m.

This is considerably more than the deal struck with Milan over the winter break, which was €0.5m for the loan and a buy-out clause worth €8m.

“Maxi Lopez’s future is still up in the air, but the player would be very happy to wear the Rossoneri jersey,” agent Andrea D’Amico told SportItalia.

It is rumoured Catania could use the Fulham offer as a ruse to force Milan into raising their initial bid.

A mandatory buy-out option? Not sure about how that works.

So he'll be loaned to Fulham for 6 months and if there are set backs (like injury or no performing well) the team has to buy him? That seems weird. Like I said not sure how an option can mandatory. Can anybody help me out here?
