I don't follow hockey either 24 and was wondering the same thing. The only thing I can think of is 4v4 opens up the game and almost guatanteeing there won't be one of those 4 OT NHL playoff games.
Canada deserved the win, but it would've have been much better to see it end w/normal rules. Can you imagine the NBA Finals, game 7 OT and they go 4v4?

One other thing that I noticed..no fighting. That bs where hockey fans say that fighting has to be part of the game are wrong.

4v4 has become the norm for overtime both in the NHL and international play. The logic is to encourage open play and the teams to go for the win. Otherwise the tendency in overtime, due to the sudden-death nature and the fatigue factor, is to play cautiously and clog up the neutral zone. (something which is impossible to do with four players) Get two teams doing that and you end up with goal starved games being decided in the fifth overtime.

As far as the level of upset that USA v Canada constitutes is concerned, it is big. The Canadians were heavily favorite to win the whole tournament the US maybe the fourth or fifth team. While its true all American players earn their pay in the NHL only two or three of them could have objectively made the Canadian roster before the tournament. The norm amongst NHL teams is to have 2 or 3 Americans, 5 or 6 Europeans, and about 14 Canadians. Also, we were the youngest team in the tournament and its in Canada whose passion for this cannot be overstated. So had the US pulled this off today it really would have been a huge upset and a incredible letdown for Canada. But unfortunately they didn't and as a result I took huge amounts of stick from everyone I watched the game with and everyone I seen since it ended and will for sometime. Its nice to see Canadians drop the cynicism and get behind something though and I hope this will get some Americans to view hockey with fresh eyes. It is an amazing sport!

    1) Ryan Miller is a stud.

    2) We came close to beating Canada in their national pastime, but Canada will never beat us at ours (eating and/or complaining, of course).

4x4 is also better from a quality of play perspective in that you can rotate your exhausted players more as only 4 or on the ice at a time.

24- I follow & watch a lot of Hockey and can give you no specific answer. Other than most of the players needed to be back to their teams mid-season. I completely agree that a Gold Medal game should never be decided with a 4v4, don't get me started on the shootout...

My only complaint... WHY FLIP'N CINDY CROSBY!!!! :3d crying:

As everyone else said, 4 on 4 opens up the play a considerable amount.

I hate shootouts, but I also don't want a repeat of Game 6 of the 1998-99 NHL Stanley Cup.

I think shootouts are great in the regular season but agree that they should not be employed to decide gold medals. Thankfully they are not used in the NHL playoffs.

Well, that's probably happened. But we'd just write it off to some touchy-feely one-world-socialist-voting cretin.

oh... wait.. that's what the guy's saying about himself, aint it?

Canadians take a lotta shit.. I dont care WHAT their particular politics are, they deserve the place in the spotlight, cause they earned it.
