Nothing wrong with strength in depth. We would have 2 good young assets. The danger with any young player is that they can go off the boil and need a break (Liam did at the start of the season, even Wayne Rooney is having a tought time by his standards).

Routledge is 21, Dempsey is 23, any manager who does not expect to nurse maid gifted players, just because they are good will be living in a dream world.

RE: A Move for the Tooz?

As a supporter of the Polish National Team, I think Matusiak is a decent player. I honestly do not think he is Premiership quality, but what do I know? Very little.

The fee is not that high, but Matusiak does not possess the pace or the strength needed to succeed in this league. I hope he proves me wrong. It would be nice to have a Pole on the team though other than Radz who was born in Poland, but is now a Canadian international.

What ever happen with the talk about Jerome Thomas from Charlton? I haven't heard his name lately, but a week back it looked like we were going to get him.

    RE: John stopped up?

Well if not to Watford then where? I can't imagine CC will hold onto him much longer if there are any other offers.

    From Steve B. on TFI:

    Update !! -- Steve B, Monday, January 15, 04:20:20pm
Do not know what is happening on the Onyewu front (the gooch), or why he wont respond, but I can confirm that CC has been given the green light to re-bid for Fiorentina defender Tomas Ujfalusi. The price is likely to be 7m euros....ironically about the identical amount we received for Boa. It is my firm belief that Onweyu will be given just 24 hours to agree to the offer he has already received or the club will push ahead with an offer for the giant Czech. Apparently the Italian club will be interested if an offer meets their evaluation of the player and that was about 7m euros in the summer when we first tried.
If the Onweyu deal falls through, officials from the club will fly back out to Italy on thursday..!!

    -------------------------

My question: Since we'd be paying more for Ujfalusi does that mean he's better then Gooch?

Well, he's a center back for the Czech Rep. National Team and has 50 caps to his name since 2001. So presumably he's highly regarded among his fellow countrymen. I wish I knew more. I know he didn't do much against the USA at last year's WC, but that was more because the USA couldn't get any offense going against them...

He'll be 29 in March, not so old that we'd expect him to be over the hill terribly soon. For whatever reason, I'd been under the impression that he was in his 30s already.

Gordon would be a good signing and from the Hearts and scotland games I have watched he looks to be absolute quality. Good shot-stopper doesn't look bad on CK's and he is pretty big which helps keepers. He is a major reason why Scotland do so well since Walter Smith came to the team and I believe even with a new manager he can lead Scotland to Euro 2008 as he is that kind of quality. I really think he could go onto become a top quality keeper in this league.

I'll be you all the money I have that Scotland does NOT make Euro 2008. I am not saying Gordon is not a good keeper, but Scotland does not have what it takes to make it through that difficult group that includes France, Italy and the Ukraine.

Scotland is off to a nice start, but there is a long way to go in qualifying.

From what I have seen from Ukraine they shouldn't be that much of a problem to Scotland. If Sheva isn't scoring then they don't play that well. The Scots will have a challenge, but because of this start all they need now is about 3 wins and a draw to at least make the playoffs and that is very much doable.

Back to the topic, I've been watching the Man City v. Sheff Wed replay on FSC, and I'm reminded that City really suck at central attack. Both Corradi and Samaras have underachieved [except against us] this season. I know that Psycho is on a tight budget; certainly Collins John could help those guys, and he's pretty cheap.

The problem for Collins John in my opinion is that he wants to be guaranteed first team football for a team that will NOT get relegated. Unfortunately, he is not good enough to play week in and week out for a club like that.

I think he would be a good fit with Manchester City as well, but I do not think he would get the playing time he thinks he warrants. Corradi and Samaras have definitely underachieved this season, but they have Vassell as well so there are a number of strikers to compete with for Collins John.

My point is that Collins John's desires are not realistic based on his skills on the pitch. He is good, but he is not great and does not deserve the kind of playing time he thinks he should get.

If he were to go to Watford or Sheffield United, he could play 90 minutes every match. That is what he should do. Unfortunately, he is too proud to take a move to a club that might get relegated.

I agree with you, Tom. He should go to Watford, he would get the playing time he wants there, but he won't because Watford are going to be relegated at the end of this season.

But the thing is, if he does really well, and Watford do get relegated, he will most likely be sold off to a Premiership club. Of course, that's not certain to happen, but it is probable.

The things I've read about Craig Gordon suggest that he's quite good. If we made a bid for him, would we be trying to bring him in to be the #1 keeper instead of Niemi, or to be the #1a if/when Niemi gets hurt or leaves the club?

Follow-up: Vassell had a great match; only a SuperWhite goalie stopped him from a hattrick. He also provided a sitter to Corradi that was screwed up. When Samaras came on to replace Corradi, it was same result. Samaras was clear through with an open man to his right, but never looked at him and Crossley ate him up. Then in the last minute of extra time, Beasley fed him right in front of the goal and he screwed it to the right.

Man City have the worst strikers in the league -- bar none! [except against us]
