The nuts and bolts of the offside rule states that a player is in an offside position if there are fewer than two defenders between the player and the goal *at the time the ball is kicked*. Being in an offside position is only penalized if in the referee's opinion the player in an offside position is involved in the play or creates some type of advantage for his team by holding the offside position. It is a common misconception that a player has to attempt to play the ball to create an offside penalty. Any action a player in an offside position makes that "interferes" with the play can be deemed an offside penalty whether the player ever tries to play the ball or not.

Thanks for picking up my omission PF!

AT THE TIME THE BALL IS KICKED OR PASSED TO THE PLAYER. NOT when it arrives at the player.

And THIS is USUALLY the point of contention. There are typically more bad offside calls the louder the fan noise. Because the lino often listens for the kick and watches the D line. Same as a first base umpire listens for the catch while watching the bag.

    To illuminate the previous post:
AND a player is within the area... ie can reasonably play the ball or obstruct a defender.
A player on the other sideline from where the ball is played to will not usually be called. If he is, the stands will erupt.

At the end of the day, it's just another 2 points thrown away -- joining 5 other wasted points.

No excuse for Fulham not to be in the top half of the the table right now.

There is also the offside rule that you can pass the ball to another player, who does not have 2 opposing players between him and the goal, if the player being passed to is BEHIND the ball. This rule most often comes into play during break-away counters.

I agree with Chicago. This is a team that can generate some offense! It is a lot of fun to watch. But then we piss away leads when we are dominating possession and have control of the tempo of the match. This is a defensive and a GK'ing problem. Niemi and Baird have to go - They are crappola and thats the bottom line.

I have to give my props to Steve Davis. The guy IMO does not get enough credit for all the work he puts in. Watch him this next match...he is everywhere and is quickly becoming my favorite player. As far as Baird, I'm disgusted with how much room the oppositions attacking left mid has to receive the ball on switches. That Petrov dude was napping over there he was so uncovered. Then when he gets it and goes at Baird, he's going full steam and no one will stop someone coming at them full steam with the ball being at a stand still. I don't know if it's Davies too far up the field because he was attacking or if it's Baird too far down the field cuz he sits back to far, but someone needs to mark that attacking left mid....NOW!!!!!
