That was a very noteworthy appeal. I must say, I am being swayed to approach it the same way.

Interesting, as I (and perhaps ianhux) consider your stance an inevitable losing proposition of swimming against the global tidal wave of reference to the Beautiful Game as "football". But do as your brain directs you. Eventually an adeherence to the term "soccer" will tire and drown from exhaustion. But at least you have made your stand....right?

    (a) when you played (b) what level (c) positions (d) best position (e) other football experience.

    a. Played from about 8 years old through high school. Played occasionally throughout college (coed and indoor leagues). Pretty much hung up the cleats when my daughters were born, although looking to join a mens team

    b. Played on the high school team and a travelling "select" club team. No where near good enough for collegiate.

    c. Keeper

    d. Keeper

    e. Hoping to coach my daughters teams. But they are a bit young yet.

Blatant promotion of commercialism, as he tries to sell more nike ManUre shirts here in the States.

The correct name of the game is Association [Rules] Football, shorten to Football. Like cricket, the laws of the game were formulated in England, however it was popular around the globe in non-colonial outposts, NFL and Aussie Rules are derivatives of Rugby and retained the football name. Where no derivatives exist the sport is mostly known as Football (i.e. Fédération Française de Football, Deutscher Fußball-Bund - althougth the Italian federation uses soccer). Commonly soccer is used as a shorthand to describe the sport where ambiguity exists, so it is football and has as much right to the name as any other sport that uses it, and if you want to be picky about the name then it should really be “Real Soccer ARFC United” in places where football can be used to describe many sports.

In the UK we get around the problem by calling sport American Football and Aussie Rules Football.

And in the US, we get around it by calling it 'College', NFL and High School Football.

And in Australia, it was 'Victorian Rules' then Aussie Rules Football.. dunno exactly about NZ but dont care much, either.

Point being, you aint ABOUT to get NCAA or NFL to change what they call themselves, justr for the sake of 'accuracy'.

And BTW, WTF is the big deal in the larger scheme of things!!!!

Considering I've always thought myself an Anglophile, I find the argument specious and petty. It's the GAME we follow, not what they call it!
    Right?
Now let's start bitching about 'Pool' vs 'Billiards'

What global tide? Plenty of other countries use words other than football to describe the sport. I think we are criticized for using soccer by other nations simply for the sake of criticizing Americans. I was just in England and I saw more than one "soccer" shop. When I speak to people from non-soccer countries, I use "football". When I speak to Americans, I use "soccer". I have found that it is a good recipe for effective communication.

As far as not pulling for a US team with "FC" in it's title, that's because I dont want anyone thinking I'm a fan of any football team other than the Browns.

For me the term soccer is a meaningful part of our nations storied history in the sport. It represents what the sport has been in this country - a small, misunderstood sport that cant really compete on the world stage. There are also the great stories like the 1950 World Cup team, the NASL, and the US invasion of Fulham. The word "soccer" was a part of these stories; and for some became a source of pride - symbolic of their struggle. Why would anyone want to change that history? Or the wonderful arguments that break out over the topic.

There is also the fact that it is just a word.

Agreed and that was the point I was making. The various sports of football have the rights to their names since they're of common ancestory.

Name them! Not that many and most of those are English speaking countries who have their own version of football. The following words for Football are used in the national federation title of the colonial powers who were on the rampage when football was speading throughtout the world:

    English - Football
    Dutch - Voetbal
    French - Football
    German - Fußball
    Spain - Fútbol
    Portugal - Futebol

I speak no asian or asia minor languages, so I cannot comment on India, China, Korea or Japan. Likewise my Russian is rusty!

So - pool a 15 ball sport and billards a 3 ball sport - or do you guys do something wierd with it? And I understand that you call "side" "English", what's that all about? ;)

Italian - Calcio (but which means kickball, so it is still closer to football, since a foot is what most everyone kicks with, than soccer).

I mean really Mo, you would rather support a violent act on a female than kicking a ball???

(Alright, feel free to parse these threadjacking posts and day now, pettyfog. Or are you too busy reading the Daily Kos?)

Speaking of which, have you seen the new commercial (for what, I am not even sure), where our whole women's team drives down to Brazil to call out their women's team for a re-match?

    Good stuff.

It is probably because the English like to put a little spin on everything. Personally I think we should update the the term to "media". As in, "Looks like he has just about snookered himself. Its going to take a lot of lower left media to pull this shot off."
