I really like Gooch as both a player and a person. He's a tough, solid defender with great pace and skills and he's also humble and sincere. I don't think you could go wrong with him on your back line. I agree with AmericanMike that it's probably the unknown factor more than anything that is making people wary. I really hope Fulham land him!

I have a feeling that Gooch will sing with Fulham with all of the rumor reports coming out. I think its down to Fulham or West Brom and Gooch will chose to play in the Premiership.

Not sure if anyone cares, but goalkeeper Tony Warner has been loaned out to Leeds until January. That leaves Fulham with Niemi, Crossley and Drobny, if he is still around, in goal this season.

I think goalkeeping is our strongest position with Niemi, Crossley and Drobny.

Maybe in January we can sign Gooch, it seem he wants to stay and play in the Champions League with Standard Liège.

Central Striker??? Although according to his ol' ball coach, that was what they did at Clemson if needed.

Doesn't sound like Fulham is completely out of it, but maybe soccernet is re-hashing old news a little? Kind of a bizzare story in way of timing.

As kwdawson said, it looks the the quest for Gooch is over. This is from www.4thegame.com.

    Onyewu snub for Boro
    Friday 04 Aug 2006

Middlesbrough have failed with a bid to sign USA defender Oguchi Onyewu.

Boro are desperate to strengthen their back-line after a deal to bring in Robert Huth from Chelsea collapsed and agreed to match Standard Liege's asking price for Onyewu.

The 24-year-old World Cup star was tempted by the thought of playing Premiership football, but eventually decided to stay with the Belgian side.

"I had a nice offer from them [Middlesbrough]. I spoke with the coaches, and there was an immediate click," he said

"The financial picture was good too, but I did not want to sign there. A few details in the contract kept me from signing.

"I have made the decision to stay here at least until the winter break."

There is quite a reliable source on www.t-f-i.com, another Fulham board saying that Gooch will be in London on Monday to talk with two clubs. One of which is Reading and the other is possibly Fulham.

He mentioned that Gooch has two years remaining on his deal at Standard Liega, but that the Belgian club wants to either sign him to an extension before the season or sell him.

Another thing this guy mentioned was there is a good chance Steed will end up at Portsmouth. Pompey is going to make one last go at Stilian Petrov, but if that fails as most seem to think it will, old Harry Redknapp is going to go after Steed.

According to 1 person on that board a player will have a medical and if he passes he will be signed. It will probably be another midfielder though.

If it's between us and Reading then we should win that battle for Gooch. I really don't understand why he would want to go through a torrid time in the CL. I mean Anderlecht goes into that competition every year with far more talent than Standard have and they usually get slaughtered by teams. If he has a couple of bad games then teams defenitley won't want him. I don't want Costa as I think he will be rubbish in this league and well the only other available CB's with experience out there is Sol Campbell who would cost too much on wages and John Mensah who i'm not sold on just yet especially at 3.5M. Onyewu is cheaper than any other option and really the best player out of this lot considering Campbell is starting to look complete rubbish and is by far more expensive on wages.

Steed needs to hurry up and leave already. He won't accept bids and now he wants to stay in London. West Ham is the only team that can afford him in London and the other clubs either aren't considered good enough or he isn't good enough for them. If he really wants to leave he has certainly had his chances.

He is indeed a quality guy. Can we outbid 3.5mil?

Reading's bid was turned down by Rennes. Rumour has it Fulham has bid a whopping 4.25 million pounds for him. He is only 23 or 24 and showed to be a strong defender at the World Cup. The addition of Mensah would add both youth and a defender that can play right away which would be a huge plus.

Stabilizing the defense needs to be the priority. We could use a right winger and maybe even a goal scorer, but defense must be at the top of the agenda before the season starts.

Wow! I didn't think we had that kind of money. He's a very good player. Here's hoping.

Awesome, he looks like a total bad ass and I remember him from the WC playing well. This would be a coup.

Not too sure about the price though. Thta isn't really a great deal for us and his wages probably wouldn't be too cheap either. Rather have Huth if we are gonna pay that kind of money at least he has Premiership experience and like alot of international experience with Germany.
