ESPN is even covering the Dempsey transfer. SportsCenter is on right now and on the upcoming headlines on the left of the screen they have the caption "Dempsey On The Move." Good to see it getting mainstream press.

Okay.. you guys can say "Wow.. just wow!" all you want. I'll just say Roflmao. Mainly because I've seen this all before.. at least similar.

EXTREMELY precious is this FB comment: "Maybe he's not smart enough to realize that Seattle doesn't play for a UEFA Champions League."
Well... neither do 2/3 of the teams in the prem. So please explain the logic in that statement
And those poor blue kippers... A few wanted him there.. why?

So lessee... Sit on the bench for half the minutes of the season... or be THE Man in a lesser league while making big bux and being handy for USA so as to prove for once and all... Which do you think will help him maintain peak skills?

    wiki: Personal life
Dempsey is married to Bethany Keegan Dempsey. They have a daughter named Elyse and a son named Jackson.[citation needed] In his spare time he is a fisherman.[93]
Growing up, Dempsey had to overcome the death of his sister, Jennifer Dempsey due to a brain aneurysm.[94]

So let me ask you, considering his future in London was in doubt... do you really believe he might pick up and move themselves to Liverpool ?

Finally, Clint doesn't OWE the Premier League or his fans a damn thing other than to appreciate their support. He has proved what he wanted to over there. And paid back on the gamble Fulham took.
    So there!
    I don't blame him a damn bit.

Always good to hear from 'fog (hope all is well) - and I agree with the post, particularly, the last few lines. Best of luck to Dempsey going forward. COYW

I think what the surprise is is that one year ago Clint was all about Champions League Football, wanting to play for a team that could get him there. The question is, what has happened in the last year that changed his mind? It's not like its been 3 or even 5 years, only one. I believe that is what is surprising everyone. I am not surprised he's back in MLS, I always had a feeling that he would be back. Just not one year after aspiring to Champions League Football.

    Can't disagree with you there

Fog, I agree with the point you're trying to make. But most people are shocked, because, while he's over the 30 mark, he still has a lot left in the engine to play at a high level. And just last summer he was trying to move on from Fulham to live his dream of playing in the Champions League, as he mentioned this numerous times over the years in several interviews. But he took his chance last summer, involving a lot of drama with his departure with Fulham, and wound up at Tottenham--coming close to Champions League. I was expecting Tottenham to let him go during this transfer window, but I was not anticipating a move back to the States so soon. I was expecting him to go to another Premier League team that made it to UEFA perhaps. I was not expecting him to quit so soon on his quest for top level soccer. Some of us thought the move to Everton made more sense at the time than MLS. But let's face it, the Sounders offered him a deal he couldn't refuse financially, he has his family that he more obligated to than us fans--and they will be well taken care of with this deal. Plus, he gets to be with his buddy EJ too.

I've had time to thing about this today, and I -- finally -- have come to the realization that what Clint was after with MLS is EXACTLY what he was after with Fulham -- a 4 or 5 year contract. Had we not been preparing for a sale, Mc might have given it to him. I think that Liverpool was probably going to give him that contract if the idiot at NESN hadn't queered the deal. He signed with Spurs not to get Champions League football, but because they made an offer that MAF would approve. He would have signed with someone sooner, but MAF was having fun twisting the knife in Liverpool's ribs because of the NESN fuck up. Spurs was important to Clint not because of any ambitions, but because he could play football and keep his kids in the same schools. Despite what you read elsewhere, he had a great season with Spurs, but ... .

... but Clint still wanted a long-term contract. Why? because he's seen what happens to 30+ players in Europe. He didn't want to have a series of one-year contracts and rip his family apart. In the end, it was the stability of the long-term contract that trumped league and location.

And 'fog is right. Clint had nothing at all to prove in England, nor did he owe anyone anything. Clint's always been all about family, and now he has the long-term contract he's been looking for and the stability that comes with it. At the end of the day, it's not the money, it's the family.

The only quibble I have with Clint's decision is that I think we won't see the best of Clint in Brazil, but if the boy is happy, then so am I.

This is what people fear but are you then also saying we won't see the best of Donovan?

The first analysis of this I've seen that actually makes sense to me. Figures it would come from HD! Insightful stuff, as always.

Clint gets the money and the long term contract, gets to keep his family together, and gets to play most of the time instead of half the time. Good reasons to come home.

If I have a concern, it's that his arrival makes the MLS Western Conference playoff race even more messy. The Earthquakes, having stunk it up in the first half of the season, are finally starting to play well. Wondo, back from the Gold Cup, scored twice tonight against Chivas and Goodson made his San Jose debut (and Carlos Bocanegra got a straight red for Chivas) as the Quakes won their third in a row. Bad news is that they're still in 8th place (top 5 make the playoffs). Good news is that the 2nd through 8th place teams are only separated by 5 points in the standings. The Sounders are 1 point ahead of the Quakes in 7th and have played fewer games, so they're going to be tough to pass. Looks like this is going to get very interesting.

Time will tell if this was a good idea or not. But I'd bet on one thing...Spurs are gonna wish they still had Clint when they lose Bale to Real.

grant wahl on twitter regarding mls teams reaction to the Dempsey signing
not surprising what he says considering the allocation order and all, seemed very quick and seamless considering all the mysterious MLS rules. I really DO NOT like the sounders but I do commend them for offering Dempsey something truly worthy of him making the move to MLS at this point in his career.

I'll give the same reply as I did to Jimsig's photo on Facebook: He definitely looks better in a white shirt.

    Re: Clint Dempsey

I know we are all probably still in shock, but I'll ask the question because I'm curious for everyone's insight...WHY? I have to imagine if Jol wasn't around, he'd be back wearing the familiar #23 for us, but the MLS? Has the market for his 30 year old services in Europe dried up? Don't get me wrong, I'm excited for the MLS (is he trying to be "the guy" to bring the MLS to the next level...an enhancing his legacy play?) and the fact that Duece gets playing time all the way through to the World Cup, but I'm just not seeing the rationale in light of his Champions League comments and such.

Or, could it be that we get a better Clint that won't be getting as beat up as he would have in the Prem?

I know the English leagues are rough, but MLS isn't far behind, if at all. Roughness is a referee-forgiven trademark from the old days. Health and fitness should still be a concern for the dude.

This is such a load of $hit. I've too many complaints with this "article" to set forth now, but I hope to get around to it when I have time. "Flop." Sure. Dempsey was "flop" last year. As compared to what? For some reason, this article pissed me off - must be good journalism.
