A lot of people have gone with McBride, and I can understand that. Although I think it is wrong. The club captain has several responsibities, he represents the players and leads them by setting standards in behaviour off and on the pitch. He is become more important for the PR of the club. These needs are met by McBride, but he is not my captain because he will not spend enough time on the pitch and while there are many that disagree with me, forwards do not make good captains. So, the first thing in deciding who club captain should be will be down to whose name is on the team sheet week in week out and who is likely to play 90 minutes. This limits players - Niemi, Rosinior and possibly Diop are the only choices from the old squad. It is tough to know from the new team who will be an ever present, but I think Aaron Hughes will be. I would knock Niemi out as I dislike keepers being captain even more than forwards! A captain has to lead by example and I thought Diop was missing at points last year so he goes. Personally I like the idea of Rosinior being club captain but I think Hughes will be. Either way, I think it will tell us a lot about Sanchez when he makes his choice. COYW.
lot's of interesting points from all of these posts. does anyone know when this will be announced? I for one do not want the rotating armband. I just don't like it. However, due to some points mentioned by others as far as what a captain should be, the only person I see fit to wear the armband is McBride. If he should be denied from it because of not enough time on the pitch, then I think you almost have to rotate it...that is unless it goes to Boca who I think is captain material, but again, will he be out there enough?
I think this whole load that a captain needs to see the field and whathaveyou is rubbish. The primary goal of the captain is to be a leader of the team; to give the team a kick in the ass if they're lagging; to calm others down when it is necessary (and when talking to the ref, of course); and to generally have a large influence over most of the other players such that motivation will work. The problem is, since I (or any of us) are not on the team, I can't really say for sure who that player is. Perhaps McBride due to his time with the club and his impressive work rate (in that he works very hard). Perhaps Niemi for similar reasons plus he's literally seen it all at FFC. Perhaps Bocanegra since he has experience (albiet very little) with the armband; on that token perhaps Hughes for his larger (I think?) role with the armband. Maybe a committee until Jimmy Bullard returns, I don't know for sure and I can't say for sure. So as a guess...McBride, probably due to his time with Fulham more than anything. Hughes may get a shot at it, as well, if that falters.
I think the players will have a huge say in who is captain, of which, who are we to argue with them? Hughes has the experience, Brian the leadership qualities, etc.
Brian McBride named captain. http://www.fulhamfc.com/Club/News/NewsA ... ptain.aspx Congrats to McBride!
that's awesome! I'm so glad he actually accepted it. with his humility I wouldn't have been suprised had he refused it. congrats to Big Mac!
This is great news! I think he was well deserving of the honor no matter what part of the field he played on. He is a great leader and he is a hard worker that is respected by his teammates. Lawrie made a great decision!
That's awesome. McHead will set a great example of hard work and sportsmanship for the rest of the squad to follow.
Could knock me over with a feather, I'm pretty sure it's not the first time it's been offered to him! Just verifies, for me, that this is his last season with Fulham, though. He will have tried everything once.
McBride... He simply opitimizes everything a club could desire from a player. His work rate is second to none, wears his heart on his sleeve and has continually shown his dedication to Fulham both on and off the pitch. At this time he is the clear cut favorite.
Somebody more clever than I will undoubtedly get the FFC screensaver snapshot of him with the captains armband soaking in Hong Kong sweat and make it his or her avatar. That's the way he should go into the pantheon of certified Fulham heroes.
I am not savvy enough to figure it out either. Would definitely be my preferred avatar. Can't believe a yank will go down as being a hero in Fulham lore...
You spend enough time on the offal, and you'll see that he has fewer detractors than anyone on the squad.
after reading the "Fulham vs. Arsenal" thread, I saw several times people saying McBride should be dumped and lose the captain's armband. Should such a stance be taken after one match, especially against Arsenal at the Emirates? I'd like to see everyone's views as to this. IMO...one match doesn't mean anything. We could've pummeled Derby 6-0 and I don't think you could put the jury out on McBride as captain. Let's give it a few matches and see what happens. If everyone is so enamored with having Healy and Kamara on then why not play three up front w/ Big Mac in the middle? Your thoughts...
Despite the fact that our team played a good and entertaining game and troubled a much superior side all afternoon on their pitch, people who are predisposed to dislike Macca as captain are going to use ANYTHING -- even a surperior display like yesterday's -- as a reason to restate their point. Don't worry, doggy; everything will turn out all right [I keep channeling 1960s song lyrics this morning!]
Whatever one thinks of McBride as an inspiration, and deserving of the amulet, the fact remains that, as I say repeatedly, wearing it affects a player's performance on the pitch UNLESS he is predisposed to serve that role by dint of his personality and past experience. We all saw what happened when it was given to Boa Morte. From a great performance every couple of games, he went to maybe 1 of 10. The jury's still out on McBride, yesterday means nothing by itself.. but anyone who looks at his history certainly would, I think, be worried. If Brian had switched to Attacking Mid some years ago as I {and many others} thought he should have, then it might be a different story.
