Ignore lineups provided by Soccernet for these matches -- see earlier discussion with TofM about this. USSF doesn't post their lineups this early, and Soccernet usually doesn't list starting lineups until the match actually starts.

This is the 3rd or 4th seriously weird lineup for USMNT at some level that Soccernet has provided. Don't know what's up, but I'd check with ussoccer.com before you believe anything from anywhere else.

So, some monkey-scribe, sitting at a typewriter, in a dark corner room, in a basement in Bristol, CT comes up with these things??? It would definitely explain a great deal.

Warning for DVR users: this is a recent change to the ESPN channel lineup so your menu may not show the game (i.e., my menu currently shows the hot dog eating contest...)

Well, pard; the two of us were there.

What a match.

My first half MOM was Nathan Sturgis. My overall MOM was Freddy Adu -- the most talented and elegant player on the pitch NOT named Pato or Jo. Freddy has come of age and is going to go to Europe soon for very big bucks off his performance in this tourney. He's physically strong and mentally tough. He out samba'd Brazil in setting up the winning goal. Speaking of which, I had been saying that our best striker was not in the GC or in the CA, but in the U-20 WC, and Jozy Altidore showed that he is the very best we have, and he's only just turned 18. What a predator. As strong as BMB and with as gentle a touch as anyone you can think of.

Was very impressed with Beltran, Rogers, Zizzo, Seitz, the LB whose name can't be spelled correctly and, really, with the whole team. The defense looked solid, and we ruled the midfield so much that the Samba Kings played nothing but long ball the second half. As T-of-McB said in the chatroom, who'd have ever thought we'd see the USA dominate Brazil.

I love these kids; many of them will feature in South Africa. USA USA USA -- WE BEAT BRAZIL!!!!!!!!!!!

I will echo pretty much everything Don has posted. A fantastic match and was entertaining from start to finish.

I couldn't believe how well the US played. They bossed the midfield, defended with great tenacity and Seitz was a wall in goal...amazing in every sense of the word. The goal that Brazil scored wasn't Seitz' fault IMO. He blocked it well the first time when the shot came blistering at him and the defense was just unable to clear. Michael Bradley shouldn't of dumped the ball into that position to set up the initial shot.

My MOTM goes to Altidore. While there were many inspirational performances in the match he netted every chance that he was given. Adu provided quality service and as Don mentioned out Samba'd the Samba Warriors.

I know this is a bold statement, but the US could possibly win this tournament. If they played with the same determination that they did tonight, I can't see a single side in the tournament one upping them.

Well done Yanks...You beat Brazil at their own game. Couldn't be Happier.

    COME ON YOU YANKS!!!

A great night in Canada. The US was impressive in their win over Brazil and with Poland's tie with South Korea they secured 2nd place in the group and advanced. Thus, my two favorite countries advanced. I could not be happier.

Watching a good portion of the US game, Altidore was great and technical with his finishing and Adu seems to be coming into his own. I have been a doubter of his for the last year or two, but in this tournament he is showing his class. I hope he is able to continue his development. He could be the playmaker down the road the US so desperately needs.

Don and I mentioned in the chatroom that Poland was ahead and how pleased you would be. It is fantastic that an underdog has made it through the group stage. Well done poles.

Yeah, I was following the match on the tracker provided by FIFA which was a nice thing. They took the lead late in the first half and gave up a goal in the 70th minute. They were able to hold on for the draw.

They are definitely underdogs. I have no idea who they will play in the knockout stage, but I am sure they will NOT be the favorites. I just checked, they play Argentina. That will be rough. BUT, they shocked the world against Brazil already and perhaps they can pull another rabbit out of their hat on the 12th.

Tough draw for the Poles. They are going up against arguably the best side in the tournament. The Argentines are one of the three sides in the tournament who have yet to concede a goal. (Chile and Nigeria are the other two) Hope the Poles can nip a goal early like they did against Brazil and hold on for the ride.

Might want some Aspirin for the match Tom...

Good stuff. Glad I made sure to record that for later watching!

Jozy's second goal was basically a tap-in but the first was sweet. And he and Freddy had a great give-and-go that resulted in a toe-poke going just wide. Adu has some great moves on the ball.

I thought some of our defenders had a deer-in-headlights look at time but Seitz was solid. He made a few good saves and we got a few good breaks - that game could've been 4-2 Brazil. But I'm not complaining!

Possible matchups in the round of 16 include North Korea (3rd in Group E, which is done with group play), whichever of Zambia or Jordan comes through with worse GD (but I can't see either of them actually doing well enough in their last group matches to move on), and Costa Rica or Scotland (play each other for 3rd in Group F tomorrow afternoon - draw and the Ticos finish 3rd, but that also leaves both unlikely to advance with 1 point). NK seems the likeliest bet at this point.

MOTM for me was Seitz. He was both a rock and a wall at the back.

Altidore confirmed that he is the #1 Forward for the USMNT. Adu is coming of age.

I'm really looking forward to the rest of this tournament and to the Olympics (we could win Gold).

I've been impressed with quite a few of the guys on the US; some of them this is my first chance ever seeing them play. But the most impressive to me and somebody I've been paying extra close attention to is Sal Zizzo. He's looked like a men among boys at times.

I'm north of the boarder so I thought I had a scoop on all you guys being able to watch the game, guess not. Good to see ESPN came to their senses.

Great game. We at no point looked intimidated and very rarely outclassed. Terrific that we were able to come back and regain the win! We've already played three though games so were in the grove and could make a serious run at the whole tournament.

Wasn't around a TV yesterday, did ESPN actually showed the game?? My cable co. gives me 4 different freakin espn channels except for the one that counts for this tourney. Shout out to "Yankee Jim" from the offal board (can't remember his moniker here) for the 10+ minute highlight link (under adu, page 2). Freddie has all but assured himself an European contract w/his scinttilating performance (hope he looks to the Dutch league).

After a huge win like that, the coach and the leaders on the team need to get everyone's feet back on the ground immediately. We can't afford to look ahead, just take care of business on Wed. then press on.

As a sidenote, the kids performance here actually helps the Copa's hapless showing, by further enhancing the "C" team excuse.

This U-20 side shows fantastic promise and as Don mentioned before has the US' top striker in the side, Jozy. Can't wait to see them in action again in the next round. I have a good feeling that this side can make the finals.

SoCalJoe...it was a shame you missed the match. It was evenflow football the entire match. The US stood "toe to toe" with Brazil and beat them at their own game.

I expect a fair amount of these players to future in the 2010 WC in South Africa.

TofM; just from the highlights it looked like we created an equal number of chances as they did (even though Seitz had far more work to do). Brazil usually has a 1 goal advantage before the game even starts due to those yellow jerseys. **tangent alert: the wifey and daughter went to a candle party (newlyweds don't fall for 'it's a coed thing' excuse), watching Brazil dismantle Chile 3-0 in the Copa quarters, 44th min.)**

From the group of death (S. Korea has to be scratching their heads), we've had a great tourney, but we can't afford to look ahead.

SoCalJoe - yes, ESPN (plain, vanilla ESPN) showed the game, though they need to fire their producer - the audio on the commentator was drowned out by the fan noise (kind of like the drummer drowning out the lead vocal).

Hopefully this means the other USA games will be on ESPN as well (while I did pay $12 to get Galavision this month, I prefer commentary I can understand).
