    Here's the thing: talent is a wonderful thing, but it is not going to get you anywhere near your potential if you don't work hard. For instance:

    I can't think of any athlete who worked harder at his craft than did Walter Peyton, Michael Jordan, Bill Russell, or Oscar Robertson. Each of these gentlemen was going to become a professional athlete, and each of them was surpremely gifted, but each of them became paramount because each of them were unsatisfied with mere talent and determined to roll up his sleeves and work his ass off. I used to love to point out to kids at the school I taught in that MJ's weak spot at NC was considered to be his team defense. Within just a few years in the NBA, MJ became an automatic selection to the all-defense team. NOBODY worked harder to improve over being a star.

    Why is all this pertinent? Because Freddy has more natural skill and aptitude than Dempsey, than Davies, than Michael Bradley, maybe even more than Donovan, but he didn't imrove through hard work in the MLS, and he hasn't done so in Portugal or France. I've always said that the saddest thing in sports is a promising career destroyed through injury. If that's true -- and it certainly is for me -- then the second saddest thing is a gifted athlete not doing those things necessary to make himself great. Freddy, you wasted your talent and our time.

    Lack of work ethic or a serious attitude problem. There's an established pattern with Adu and coaches not playing him - and I don't care for the excuse 'the coach that brought him in is gone.' Yeah, that's a bummer, but dude has to work harder to impress the new guy. See Don's post above. He's still young - come back to MLS or Mexico and give Europe another go in a few years.

    A lot of people suspect he was never as young as claimed, something not unheard of with athletes from Africa, or so I've read. If he's twenty now, he should have grown in the last five years - I'd be interested to know if he has. Just throwing that out there for ya

    It really is troubling though and hard to believe;

    Not long ago he was the star of U20 World Cup, Benefica's coach was impressed with his first appearances for the club, and Don said he definitely needed to be a part of the US MNT's plans.

    I read something a few weeks ago that he hasn't grown in like 6 years. I'm not sure this is possible without not being 14 when he came to the league. Even then, I don't believe he was like 22 or whatever like some people were claiming.

    I think we all knew he wasn't going to be a Pele or George Best or whoever, but I think we all thought he could become a top class player playing for a major club. This news comes as no surprise though as he has been amazingly poor in Europe and wasn't lighting it up in the MLS either. He needs to come back and start over and hopefully become a good player in this league. I'm not sure he's ever going to be more than that.

    Just for the record I grew approximately 1" after 7th grade. I know I am more the exception then the rule but it does happen.

    Well - as of now - his European experiment is over... time to return to the domestic league.

    I am not all that worried about how old he is - obviously he isnt good enough and that is the most important factor. I think we can all think of a players who have horrible attitude or work ethic, but they are still the best player come game day. This feller is not.

    Rumors that he might be loaned to the same Greek team that Eddie Johnson just got loaned to.
