2015 Woman's WC

Sounds like a great way to spend a friday evening Nev. While in the overall picture your perspective is spot on, expectations aren't necessarily a bad thing. The state of the Women's game has improved exponentially to the point were the level of competition lends itself to 5 or 6 teams capable of winning this tournament. Football at the WC can be very cruel and one bounce, break, or call could be the difference. However, is it delusional or unwarranted to expect the team to play to their potential? This is the very top level, and with that comes the criticism (good and bad, the great defense hasn't gone unnoticed), even the team themselves have admitted they have sputtered along offensively and not playing to their capabilities.

 

Agree with Nev & Joe, if that's possible. Expectations are fine as long as we don't turn on the team. Especially when it becomes apparent that those expectations may be a little too high this go round.

The one player who has really stood out for me so far is Julie Johnston. Maybe in part because I wasn't familiar with her prior.

 

I'm pretty sure on my tombstone it'll read 'Yes, but AggieMatt beat you to it'. Lost in what we've done wrong is Johnstone being an absolute monster...In a great Godzilla kind of way. By far the ladies best performance of the tourney, and can't wait till Tuesday.

 

That sounds a little ominous.

As for the game, it was another good enough performance. I thought the pressure the team generated looked better, but then again, China offered very little in the way of attacking intent.

 

Completely agree as well. Saw a great quote on facebook or something that said, "71% of the earth is covered by water, Julie Johnston covers the rest."

 

Hope Solo hasn't been very busy for the last few games, but I suspect she'll need to be at her best this evening. Obviously the ladies have their hands full, but the Germans might of done us a favor by beating France despite being outplayed the majority of the match. Expecting a tight and tough match with extra time and/or PKs coming as no surprise.

 

Where is the Standing O icon when you need it?? Fantastic performance by the ladies. Dodged a bullet by the missed pk, but by far the better team on the pitch over the 90....UNO MAS!!!!

Gut-wrencher to say the least, long after we've forgotten she'll will think about it and what she could of done different. The Lionesses were one crossbar, save, barely missed header from playing on Sunday. England really embraced the role of underdog to the point where they could give the U.S. all they wanted. Ive seen Japan play a match and a half and concur with HD that they aren't the same as 2011. That said, they'll be a tough nut to crack.

This tournament from our ladies reminds me of the Italians men's team that won WCs. Great defense, but nothing special in the group stage. Great defense and increasingly better overall performances in the knockout stages to the point when the final rolled around they were the best team on the planet.

Back to England, what did they do to piss off the Football/Soccer Gods this much?

 

Have either hosted or gone to someone's casa for the entire tournament, so the decision to go to a pub has got me a little leery. 16 years is entirely too long, let's go ladies!!

Revenge is a dish best served.....Lloyd. Outstanding performances by the ladies in each of the last 2 matches.

I thought Julie Johnston was our best player in the group stages but Carli Lloyd dominated in the money rounds. At one point today she had to feel she could do no wrong. Even when she swung and whiffed, she was able to recover & create a chance.

Very happy for the USWNT for winning & getting that WC monkey off their back.
