THANK YOU VETERANS

Thanks to all the veterans and folks still serving. I truly appreciate what you do for our country and realize how fortunate we are because of you. I always feel like less of a person when talking to a veteran, not necessarily in a bad way. One day is never enough to thank you for your service, but in honor of the day, thank you!

And let's send a salute to those who suffered Pre Traumatic Stress Syndrome, as I did in Navy Tech School when the Berlin Wall went up. I had never been so scared in my life. Because there I was in some insulated place, with events signaling there might be real and present danger to my skinny ass.

Contrast that to my 'near front line' experience and outlook during the Cuban Missile Crisis. It was freaking exhilarating to be flying on an unarmed transport into 'besieged Gitmo' .. with Migs off the wing and knowing A-A guns were drawing a bead on you as you made the approach!
-Second most was flying hurricane relief into Port-au-Prince, watching the farm equip being dragged off the runway so we could land, and having the freaking Tonton Macoute on OUR freaking plane, rifles at the ready.
And extorting us for packs of cigarettes!!!

Added: let's also salute 'Parents of veterans..' the reason I think of that is because of my two examples. My mom was frantic when I finally called her after I think, the second gitmo run. She of course suffered under the first paradigm: the unknown.
Yes, I was unthinking and self-centered.. otoh, I wasnt allowed to say what I'd been doing, anyway.

 

You're right, one day is not enough. Every day, no matter the situation, when I meet a Armed Service person, I look them in the eye, and just say "Thanks for your service," or just "Thank you". They all deserve that from us every day!!

 

I was at a Jazz game last year and during a time out they asked for all Vets to stand and then asked for a round of applause...but they got more than that and deservedly so. I don't recall a single person sitting during that applause, it was a standing ovation and a loud one at that. I too am very grateful to all those who serve our country.

 

This is a waste of a holiday. Why should we celebrate the lives of imperialist soldiers? Thanks to you shitty day I can't to to the library. Thanks a lot veterans.

I want to thank the young men and women who served under me in Baghdad, 1st squad, 4th PLT, can't say the company because OPSEC has been drilled into me, even all these years later. If any of them have happened to find their way to this site and are lurking, I was glad to have served with you all, and I am still as cheap a bastard as ever (they will get the joke).

About what Fog said, my mother took my deployment harder than me. She was the happiest of everyone in my family when I got home. I had the good sense to leave out some details of what happened in Baghdad until I got back, and she told me how grateful she was when I returned. Family members, my wife, my Dad, and my brother, had it rougher than I did. Thank you all.

I know what you are about, and I blow off 99 percent of your posts entirely, because I do not have the time or inclination to read the nonsense that you spew. You seriously need to grow up. The purpose of a joke is to make others laugh, and you have failed miserably.

 

I was making a reference to the flag day thread where my socialist politics really came to the forefront. Obviously hatter got it.


I'd like to know what you think "I'm about". Of you don't like my politics, fine, but I'm not going to hide them because some sensitive person gets offended. If you don't like my angry attitude towards Fulham, then whatever, but I'm not hiding that shit either.

An unending thank you to all our veterans.

I think my favorite memory along this line is a speech given by a local politician before our Memorial Day parade several years ago, before 911. A few gray-haired, somewhat frail looking veterans were in uniform sitting on a stage while the politician gave his speech. He started talking about sporting events and great athletes. Then he described a gesture that fans used at the time to show their appreciation for a great athletic performance - the "I'm not worthy" gesture from Wayne's World when they put their hands up in the air and bow. The politician said that is the way he feels about the veterans that served our country. He said thanks to them, he never had to serve in the military, he never had to put himself in harms way. Thanks to them he was free to attend Harvard and go to law school. When he said this I saw the veterans on the stage wiping tears from their eyes. I loved this speech because I had always thought that it was misguided the way we adored athletes and movie stars yet didnt give the same amount of appreciation to the military, police, firemen, EMTs, and doctors. What gave this moment even more meaning was that the politician was black and all the teary-eyed veterans were white. It was a touching display of mutual gratitude that I wish we would see more of these days, and it showed just how far we had come.

Also, in apprecitation of our military I heard some very telling stats the other day. They essentially showed that all the disparities that exist in our society between whites and minorities dont exist in the military. The disparities mentioned were marital status, addiction, income, healthcare, and education. The one exception was that female service members actually have a higher divorce rate than non military women.
