Now, it's the Express saying this, but they are my personal Bible.

There's a short article on a blog about this too, apparently the Express is his Bible as well.

Discuss? I think Roy didn't mean that quote as the press is interpreting it (imagine!) -- he has extolled the virtues of the squad as it is presently constructed financially, and I don't want my club to end up like Pompey or Crippled Alice. That said, another striker would not hurt my feelings one bit -- Kamara, what have we done?

I think he's just letting Mo and the supporters know that he hopes to be active in this summer's market. Roy isn't a big January sale guy, preferring to blend his acquisitions in during the pre-season. We are not in anywhere near the sort of crippling debt that has hammered West Ham, Bournemouth, Southampton, and Portsmouth -- primarily because we've never hired a spendthrift thug as manager [hmmm, who do those four clubs have in common?]. It's precisely because we DON'T splash out big transfer fees or salaries that we don't

    a. have a dominating season or two followed by
    b. years of debt and financial shenanigans.

Bournemouth were almost points deducted out of the league. Southampton dropped a division because of their irregularities [had it not been for their sugar daddy savior, they might have gone completely out of business this season]. West Ham face "Armageddon" if they get relegated [so say their porn king co-owner], and Pompey just got a 30-day reprieve from being the first Premiership club to go into administration. All of this happened because each of these clubs [and who do they have in common again?] spent themselves into some serious form and achieved some short-term success.

This quick fix stuff is not for Roy or Mo, but the fact is that we've taken in more money than we've spent out, and we're having a successful season income-wise -- attendance, cup successes, etc -- and Roy knows that if there's ever going to be any money available to maintain our current stability, it'll be there this summer.

It's funny that you should say Fulham have never hired a spendthrift thug and I AGREE But it wasn't so long ago and again I dont refer to you Don that lots of people on this site were begging for the club to Spend spend spend, thankfully we have a manager that doesn't do that, otherwise we may well be a Portsmouth, West Ham or Southampton.

I definitely agree -- maybe the clubs that overspent aren't all as bad off as Portsmouth or Southampton, but what about a club like Swindon, a relatively well run club whose braintrust once admitted to falling victim to the trap that just one more player can take them over the top -- couldn't even begin to find the link now, take my word for it. They still have a fair amount of debt, IIRC, and not like ours in the terms of interest free debt to MAF placed on the books for accounting purposes. Besides, Elm and Okaka look like they are perfectly capable of banging in a few goals this year -- I took Okaka in a fantasy team, yes, I am a dork.
