Jim Smith, United's director and former manager, mixed with a number of managers and celebrated footballers on the Prime Minister's lawn and it was during his discussions with Fulham boss Roy Hodgson that the Kassam Stadium friendly was firmed up.

Smith said: "Funnily enough, I'd just spoken with Roy earlier in the day, but neither of us mentioned that we were going to be at Downing Street later that evening!

"We chatted again when we were there and now hopefully we could have a pre-season friendly between Oxford United and Fulham, which would be a very good fixture for us."

Asked how likely it was, Smith replied: "It's a strong possibility."

anyone know anything about these guys?

Oxford U had a pretty good run in the Football League. They were relegated out of the league and into the Conference only 20 years after being in the top flight.

Jim Smith was a footballer in the lower reaches when I was first getting into fitba in the 60s, and he was Newcastle's manager when I lived in England for the 3rd (and last) time. I honestly don't remember much about him other than his name.

Gary Barnett game from Oxford in an exchange deal that saw Ray Houghton move the other way before going on to Liverpool.

Jim Smith has managed Derby, Oxford, Birmingham, Blackburn and a bunch of other places and is well respected in the game. I think loyalty more than anything else has kept him at Oxford as he could move on else where if he wanted.

Oxford's fall has more to do with finacial mismanagement than anything else. The found themselves in a lot of debt at the end of the 80's and could not afford to play some staff. The went from the top flight in the mid 80's to the conference in 20 years. They now appear to be finacially sound and hopefully for the U's they will climb back into the league over the next couple of years.

    Mighty Whites in ROK!

FOG: I couldn't find a pre-season friendly thread. If there is one, could you transfer this post there? If there isn't could you rename this thread "Preseason friendlies" Thanks.

Just saw this on NewsNow. Wonder if we're hanging on to Seol?

For those of you who haven't been to Korea in July, let's hope the boys are well hydrated and have some shade to recover in!

The Korea trip has been confirmed. Probably part of the deal with LG, I imagine.

However, wouldn't this have been a good year to come to the States? If Mac comes back, it will certainly be his last year here. We still have Dempsey and Johnson, but with the annual chances in international football, who knows if they will be with us in the summer of '09?

You know a lot of people have been talking about this, but has there been any interest from a US club to host them? I would have loved for them to come, but it doesn't sound like there was any interest on this side.

We're not going to fly over for one match, especially with the cost of the Korean jaunt. We'd only travel to the US if there were some sort of regional tour. This is two off-seasons in a row for us in Asia. I'm thinking that Summer 2009 is the best bet for a Fulham tour of the USA.

    Where would they play?

    Toronto -- Staltert
    Seattle -- Kasey
    Chicago or Columbus -- Macca
    Houston -- The Deuce

A poster on TIFF (who has been very reliable with insider info in the past) says we're playing Inter Milan at the Cottage on August 7th.

I think we should play AC Milan away so we're both in the same jerseys just to see what happens.

And if they come this way in Summer '09, they've gotta bring Deuce back to play against the Revs at Gillette (aka The Razah).
