It is almost time with the first round beginning May 7! As the quality and quantity of NASL and USLPro teams improve and increase I find myself more interested than ever in the Open Cup. I hope some network will give the tournament a broadcast outlet.

The largest field in the modern era of the U.S. Open Cup will compete for $250,000 and a spot in the 2015-16 CONCACAF Champions League this year. U.S. Soccer released the complete schedule for the first two rounds on Thursday, as well as a list of the 80 teams that will be involved.

That number is an increase from the 68 teams in 2013 that set an Open Cup record in the competition’s 100th year. However, the cash prizes remain the same: the winner takes home $250,000, the runner-up gets $60,000 and the longest survivor from each lower division wins $15,000.

Two amateur teams, five National Premier Soccer League teams, four from the U.S. Adult Soccer Association and five from the Premier Development League comprise the Open Cup’s first round, which takes place May 7. The eight winners join the United Soccer Leagues’ 14 franchises and 26 remaining non-professional teams in the second round a week later.

GolTV holds the television rights to the US Open Cup final, which is scheduled for either Sep. 30 or Oct. 1. This is the final year of their three-year contract which began in 2012.

4th Round US Open Cup results

The Fourth Round of the 2014 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup came to a close on Wednesday and after a rough start for the tournament’s top division, Major League Soccer rebounded on the third and fourth matchdays. The first two days saw MLS lose three of the first five games to lower division opponents, however, in the remaining 11 games, they went 10-1-0 as the tournament enters the Fifth Round next week.

Round 5 will feature 12 MLS clubs, 3 teams from the NASL and the Rochester Rhinos are the lone USL PRO representative and therefore, will receive the tournament’s $15,000 prize money as the Third Division team to advance the furthest in the competition. Also, after the dust settled on Round 4, the last three amateur teams were all eliminated and based on the Open Cup’s tiebreaker procedure, the Laredo Heat will find themselves $15,000 richer on the strength of being the only one of the trio to defeat a team two divisions above them (Ft. Lauderdale Strikers)

Are MLS teams taking the cup seriously yet? I've been disgusted that CONCACAF Champions League matches and Open Cup matches aren't taken nearly as seriously as summertime friendlies with foreign clubs. Until MLS starts valuing domestic and regional club championships, it's not going to gain any respect in the world.

LA Galaxy announced they're bringing Landon Donovan and Robbie Keane to NC this year, after losing to us the past two years. Landon even dropped a 'We're tired of losing to Carolina" quote which we've just been having a field day with.

Railhawks 1 - LA Galaxy A Team 0 AET

All joking aside, it was a good game with two teams that really wanted to win. And even thought Donavon did come in as a sub, it was Keane who was very scary to watch. LA controlled the pace for most of the game and really should have won, but solid defending and one breakaway was all it took to send the Galaxy back to LA with no excuses about fielding a B Team and losing. Thank you for coming out the WakeMed Landon and enjoy the rest of your World Cup break. Maybe you can tell EA to put the NASL as downloadable content into FIFA and beat us there. I know I am having too much fun with this, but this is the probably the best moment in the history of the Railhawks so far.

P.S. Thank you Philly for taking out the Cosmos, even thought that was a messed up penalty call that sealed it.

Zac MacMath could have dwelled on the mistake he made that gave FC Dallas an equalizer and lifeline in Tuesday night’s U.S. Open Cup semifinal, but the Philadelphia Union goalkeeper kept his composure and finished out an otherwise outstanding performance with a perfect ending.

MacMath made a pair of saves in the penalty shootout round, including the match-clinching save on a Victor Ulloa spot kick, to help the Union win their Open Cup semifinal at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas.

MacMath’s Union teammates were perfect from the penalty spot in the shootout, with Sheanon Williams, Vincent Nogueira, Cristian Maidana and Maurice Edu converting their penalties. MacMath saved a Blas Perez attempt in the third round of kicks, then dove to his left to deny Ulloa.

The victory secures Philadelphia’s place in the U.S. Open Cup Final, which the Union will host at PP&L Park on Sept. 16. They will face the winner of Wednesday’s U.S. Open Cup semifinal between the Seattle Sounders and Chicago Fire.

It was a busy night for MacMath, who spent a lot of time coming off his line and breaking up FC Dallas attacks. His aggressiveness came back to bite him in the 81st minute when he raced out of the penalty area to try and beat Fabian Castillo to a ball, only to have the Colombian speedster beat him and then convert into an empty net to tie the score.

“They were playing a lot of balls in-behind our defense and I tried to play a high line and get off my line as much as possible to defend against that,” MacMath said after the match. “Unfortunately, [Castillo] got to it first and made us pay. It’s tough because I felt like I let my team down, so I am just really happy that we were able to battle past that and I was able to do the little things to make this happen.”

Both the Union and FC Dallas felt the fatigue of having just played league matches on Saturday, though Philadelphia had the extra burden of traveling to Texas for the match.

“That was kind of like a heavyweight boxing match,” said Union interim manager Jim Curtin. “Fortunately we were the last team standing even though Dallas put in a great team effort.

“I’m happy,” Curtin added. “I had 11 men out there the whole night and this is something that we have been striving for. Now we host a final and we’re extremely excited.”

The match was fairly evenly-played during regulation, with Castillo causing problems for the Union with his speed, and Philadelphia finding chances behind the FCD defense.

After a scoreless first half, Amobi Okugo gave the Union the lead in the 47th minute when he converted a Sebastien LeToux pass past Raul Fernandez to make it 1-0.

The Union nearly made it 2-0 soon after when Andrew Wenger blasted a shot off the left post.

FC Dallas began to put pressure on later in the second half, with Castillo’s speed causing the Union’s defense problems. He eventually broke through when he beat MacMath to a header pass from Perez, before converting into an empty net.

Neither team could find the net in extra time, with the Union coming closest after a Nogueira shot hit the post, but the Union took control in the penalty shootout to secure the victory.

Two of the most storied Major League Soccer teams in the history of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup, the Chicago Fire and Seattle Sounders, will face off on Wednesday night at Starfire Sports Complex in Tukwila, Wash. looking for a place in the 2014 Final. The game will be broadcast live online through SoundersFC.com.

The Chicago Fire have been the most successful MLS team in 17 years of the league’s participation in the tournament. The Fire have captured four titles, with the first of those coming in the club’s inaugural season in 1998 (when they also won MLS Cup). The Fire also have a league-best 34 wins in Open Cup play, but have not lifted the trophy since 2006.

The only club since then to hoist the cup in its debut season in MLS? That would be the Sounders in 2009, when they won the first of their three consecutive titles.

The Sounders and the Fire met in the 2011 US Open Cup Final in Seattle, the only time these two teams have faced off in Open Cup play. It was Chicago’s most recent trip to the Final, and the most recent time either side has won the whole thing. The winner of Wednesday’s match will, much like the 2011 Final, be on the brink of history. The Sounders, with a win, would put themselves one victory away from joining the Fire, the Ukrainian Nationals (Philadelphia), the Fall River Marksmen, and New York Greek American Atlas SC in the ‘Four Titles’ club. Meanwhile, the Fire, if they prevail, will be one win away from tying Bethlehem Steel and Maccabee AC (Los Angeles) with the all-time record of five championships.

In that match in 2011, Seattle, buoyed by an electric home crowd that shattered the tournament’s all-time attendance record for a Final (35,615), dominated the run of play throughout the match. Chicago keeper Sean Johnson made several outstanding saves to keep his team level, and Fredy Montero and Mike Fucito each had shots hit the post.

But eventually the Sounders broke through. After yet another Johnson save from a corner kick, Montero poked in the rebound to give Seattle a 1-0 lead. Osvaldo Alonso would add a stoppage-time goal on a brilliant, mazy slalom through the Chicago defense to cap the 2-0 victory and Seattle’s third straight title. That night, the Sounders joined Bethlhem Steel, New York Greek American Atlas SC and Stix, Baer & Fuller (St. Louis) as the only clubs to three-peat.

If Chicago are going to get revenge for that defeat, they’ll have to do it without Mike Magee, the 2013 MVP and Chicago’s leading scorer. Magee will be taking the day off with a one-game suspension after receiving a red card in Chicago’s 3-1 quarterfinal win over the Atlanta Silverbacks.

For Seattle, the status of young star defender DeAndre Yedlin is up in the air, as he and the team await the result of a possible deal with Tottenham Hotspur. Yedlin missed Seattle’s regular-season game on Sunday having just flown back from London where he was reportedly undergoing a physical for the English Premier League club. They may, however have Obafemi Martins in the lineup as the star forward picked up a red card in last weekend’s league match and will be unavailable next weekend, leaving the door open for him to see the field.
