Well let's see; Lee/Bolton, Jol/Spurs, and now Hutchings/Wigan shown the pink slip. Who's next???

Our own LS was getting in a bit of bother, but a win relieves a lot of pressure and gives perspective on how much better the team has looked this year. However, the next 4 games aren't easy and the pressure could increase again.

Davies at Derby, what's their GD?? -21, ouch. Yes he's bringing a knife to a gun fight, but you can't fire the whole team.

Bruce at Birmingham and Southgate at Boro. Bruce because there seems to be issues w/the new chairman, and Southgate because of those horrendous teeth. Seriously, those are some hellicious chompers.

I'm going w/Southgate, the winner of the pool will win a pint on me at the Fox and Hounds in Century City (oops Studio City), of course getting to LA is on you.

Century City? How Bourgeouis! Or it was 25 years ago.. maybe it's colorful and eclectic now.

    ;) j/k

Here's the question... who's loose to fill those? Jol?

SCJ, you need to set up a poll. I would have bet that Davies would go before Hutchings, but now my money is solidly behind Southgate.

'fog: can you set up a poll with Southgate, Sanchez, Davies, Keane, Bruce, Megson, Curbishly, and -- just for fun -- Benitez in it?

lol Fog, no it hasn't changed. Hell its there or Hermosa Beach. Both a good 45 minute to hour drive. I second Fog setting up a poll, I'm happy just being able to post.

Certainly need to add Rafa to the list; they are close to not advancing out of the Group Stage in the Champions League.

I think Davies if perfectly safe - as safe as Watford's manager was last year. [expectations are everything]

I think Bruce will have until at least Christmas.

I think Southgate is next, unless Liverpool get less than 6 points out of their next two games (Beşiktaş and Fulham), in which case I think Rafa is gone.

The judges have convened, and even though it looks like it might not necessarily be a pink slip, if you voted for Bruce leaving Birmingham you have earned a pint. While not totally official, sounds like Bruce will scurry off to Wigan and try to take the team and the fan (okay they have more than 1) out of the relegation zone.

    Another one bites the dust

    On the heels of Billy Davies getting the sack at Derby comes a want ad in the Derby County Register;

WANTED: one football manager. experience preferable but not necessary (like it matters). Must possess a strong sense of humor (better to laugh when you feel like crying), no computations skills (better not to know what goal differential means), above all tremendous acting skills required. Applicants must be able say to the media and squad with a straight face that the team will stay up this year. Perks include great visiting food tables at away stadiums (free vodka at Stamford Bridge), being able to brag to family and friends you coach a premiership team (don't get too used to it), and away trips to scunthorpe, colchester, and cardiff amongst other next season (if you haven't gotten the sack yourself).

Funny want ad, but saddened at the loss of Davies to the league. He's a good guy and a good manager. He just had the ill fortune to have gotten his side promoted three years too early in their five-year plan. They've got no infrastructure and gave him no transfer assistance. He suffers and they fire him.

Contrast this with Watford last year -- same scenario [two years too early in their three-year plan in that case], except for the fact that they never looked like firing Aidy Boothroyd. The result? Watford are in first place even without the manifold skills of the CCC's only Cheesehead.

Although I hate to say anything nice about Watford -- it's a Hatter thing -- their board could give Derby's a lesson in class.

While I am not shocked at this news I am disappointed. What did Derby's board expect Billy Davies to do with a sixth place championship team being promoted to the PL?

Wonder what this might mean for Benny's future playing prospects?

    Newcastle Mentality?

Rumors are a flyin that Big Sam is in big trouble (didn't even imagine him being put on the poll). Now I've never been to England and until 5/6 years ago if you did a word association w/Newcastle I would have said 'Brown Ale". Could someone more enlightened answer a couple of questions...

    A. When a coach is widely regarded as Alladyce, why isn't the Toon Army giving him more time?? A big name coach in the States usually gets a couple of seasons (regardless of sport) to get things turned around.

    B. Is he feeling the heat because he didn't play there? and are the fans up there generally this over-the-top?

    RE: Newcastle Mentality?

Actually I have NO idea/recollection how any of us casual fans anywhere in the states 'knew Newcastle' before the golden age of the net.
I recall that in 1980, I 'knew of' ManU, Arse, Spurs, and Liverpool. I must assume that it was from reading SI, looking for NASL stories.

    {But then, I also have no idea how I glommed onto the Electronics Industry periodicals I subscribed to.}
I've actually 'been on the net' more than 20 years, long before the WWW {remember maillist?}.. but my interests changed somewhat along the way, aided by the advent of MLS, and the 94 WC.

The Ale association would probably prevail today... if you polled the man on the street.

SCJ: Here's the problem in a nutshell.

    1. Newcastle is as rich as the Big 4
    2. Newcastle has a fan base just as large and much more passionate and loyal than Man U's or Liverpool's.
    3. Newcastle has a fantastic facility that they fill almost all the time.
    4. Newcastle hasn't won anything in about a half-century.
    5. Newcastle fans have seen the "coming of the messiah" about 15 times during that 50+ years.

They are not inclined to be patient for another 50+

    Big Sam leaves Tyneside

Well Don, good call on the lack of patience of the Toon Army, Big Sam is gone from Newcastle. Can't imagine anyone but Shearer taking over.

Not that this is a complete surprise but WOW right in the transfer window! Is it normal for a manager to be sacked during a transfer window?

Well, if it ain't egotistical enough to quote yourself, try referencing an article you wrote during the summer.

    http://www.fulhamusa.com/modules.php?op ... le&sid=547

I did that 'cause there's a lot of new folks on the site and they might not have read a perspective-placing article, but also to point out the fact that Newcastle SHOULD be up there with the top bunch. They certainly had a lot more in the way of devoted followers and cachet than Chelsea did before the Russian Mafia bought them. They've got money, a great stadium, fantastic tradition, insanely loyal supporters -- and their board seems to be the retirement home for Barnum and Bailey Clowns!

I usually give Toon Town a lot of stick, but their fans deserve better than this. How many matches has Big Sam had Michael Owen? How many has he had the Mad Thug?

    This is stupid.
