So I'm sure you all know that Luis Suarez has been banned by the FA for 8 games as a result of his racist remarks to Evra. I find this pretty interesting for a couple of reasons. It comes not that long after Blatter made his idiotic comment about racism on the pitch being settled by a handshake. I have to wonder if the FA wasnt trying to show up Blatter on this one - especially considering the villain of the 2010 World Cup was the culprit. I also wonder if the FA views Suarez as the poster child for all the behaviors they dont wont changing the face of English football - diving, poor sportsmanship, whining - so they are using Suarez to make a statement, set an example. I did feel that in our last match against Liverpool the ref was after Suarez and we definitely got some calls we dont normally seem to get. I felt it affected Suarez in the match.

Another interesting development is that the Liverpool players trained with T-shirts picturing Suarez to show their support of him. Jason Roberts and some other players who say they have been victims of racism on the pitch have made tweets criticizing the Liverpool players. Saying it's akin to supporting racism, and that they should have worn anti-racism shirts instead. This is what Daglish said about the shirts,

Okay, I think 8 games was way too harsh. Two would've been more like it. But a guy that bites players, gives fans the finger, dives, celebrates Ghana's missed PK the way he did is not a man of character. At least not to a Scott like Daglish. He is a fantastic footballer, however, who the cesspool desperately need on the pitch. That's why they're so supportive of him.

The shirts were stupid. If a player was accused of racism on Fulham I certainly wouldn't wear a shirt supporting the idiot and would support whatever the FA decided was a reasonable ban. Dalglish using the YNWA excuse is an absolute joke and is something you use after shit like Hillsborough, like the paper guy on Sky Sports said last night.

This ban was necessary. This guy is an absolute prick and deserves the 8 game ban. Racism, Homophobia and Sexism is something I take pretty seriously so maybe I am biased here, but if there is one way to stamp this cap out of the game, it is to give lengthy bans. It might seem harsh, but if a player doesn't like it then understand why racism is wrong and change his attitude towards it.

I approached this thread with some concern, because Americans on other sites seem to be getting all het up about "political correctness" and saying things like, "What next? We we go to jail for THINKING racist thoughts?"

That, of course, isn't anywhere near relevant. Suarez wasn't being an individual when he abused; nor is he being an individual when he is punished. He is working for a world-wide organization that has been committed for at least a decade to eliminate racism in the game. And we all know that when we are representing our company or organization or military unit, what we do and say reflects more on the organization as a whole than it does on us.

Suarez let Liverpool, the Premier League, and the FA down. Liverpool FC is just too full of itself to admit it.

The big question is will Terry get justice as well.

Oh, and well done all of you who've commented on this thread.

First thing I thought of when hearing about the ban, was what about Terry? If he is deemed to be guilty of the same offense he better get the same penalty.

Suarez being the punk-ass that he is will never admit being wrong and will surely take the 'I'm being targeted' approach.

8 games does sound a tad harsh, but it's a good penalty if you want to send a message. And with all of his other negative antics, Suarez is certainly a worthy candidate for having the book thrown at him.
