My family is divided over whether my love for soccer is a manifestation of my far left political position [in their view] or the cause of it.

I have found that hating soccer is right up there with hating gays, taxes, and France for most conservatives.

Makes me wonder where Pettyfog and andyns went wrong! :D

Note that the linked article for Jim Rome is a Deadspin article about Wynalda's comments about Rome originally published on this site, though Deadspin cites SportsByBrooks as its source.

why does everyone make such a big deal of not liking footy, and those who dont like footy.

people who dont like soccer think its boring (which, if its not at a high level, is very). they then only watch the World Cup and when it ends in PK's they wonder why bother play when with a conclusion unrelated to the game (which i somewhat agree with).

so then people who enjoy soccer act all sanctimonious (like this author, bryant gumbel) to the 'peons' who dont enjoy it, and label them xenophobes etc.

    and then cycle continues..

i dont like golf for many reasons. but i'm not going to accuse those who like it with some ad hominem attack. nor do i expect them to backlash at me for the same.

this whole argument really angers me....

The fact that there are so many soccerphobes in the U.S. probably in some way makes my interest more, well, interesting.

Running with the herd is fun sometimes, but taking the road less traveled, if it makes sense personally, can be considerably more rewarding.

The same logic applies to supporting Fulham, I think.

Ugh -- soccer bashers. First, I am 6'3", 275 lbs, and like to lift weights in my spare time -- in other words, I look more like a tight end than a midfielder. Second, I am the only person in my family that appreciates the game -- I was better at that than any other sport growing up, which isn't to say that I was any good.

I have 2 tactics when it comes to defending my game. If someone I don't know says anything, I just let it pass -- they can say what they want, but footy fans ain't going away in this country. If they were soccer fans, they would probably all root for Chelski. If it's one of my cousins or brothers, I can't let that pass, for familial reasons, and just as Ronaldinho couldn't play tight end, neither could ANtonio Gates survive for 10 minutes in the midfield.

Of course, around soccer fans, I'm happy to indulge on some shortcomings of the American game, like the hero worship Landycakes commands, or having every team in the league make the MLS playoffs, or the hype machine theat is David Beckham, but I digress.

I'm the only one of eight that enjoys the game in my family. As a kid I use to say all the things about soccer that are said in this article. Even today I think some of the celebrations that some players do is a little gay. For instance, will someone please tell Rooney to stop doing cartwheels when he scores a goal. However, I dont enjoy following or watching any other sport more than soccer now.

As far as 10 minutes in midfield, rcl19, I just learned this the hard way. Some women asked my to play for their indoor soccer team 'cause they were on a huge field with no subs. I've never played soccer before but I assume they asked me because they couldnt find anyone else and they know I'm fit and like soccer. They put me in midfield. Having no skills, I decided to compensate by getting to the ball first, challenging everyone with the ball, and running up and down the field with the play.

I run at least 4 miles a day, played multiple sports and know what it is like to push yourself in a workout. This one hour of soccer exhausted me and was harder than any workout I've ever done. When the game ended I sat down and my leg muscles immediately cramped up. Three days later I still cant lift my legs without help from my arms. I have never never been so sore. Soccer is by far the hardest sport I've ever played.

rcl19 are you currently playing any soccer? If not and you're interested I can ask my husband who needs players.
