Is it worth the sacrifice?

  2. No... it may preclude OTHER surface discoveries outside the crater

Mars rover may get one-way ticket
Since the Rovers are operating LONG after their minimum design lifetimes, i say yes.

It's a freaking robot, not a person! (An expensive robot with an expensive means of transportation though........to investigate a crater???)

Surely there is still some of the mars surface that they can still explorer before just "exploring" this crater. Sounds like they are just bored and want some expensive thrills.

Yeah, maybe... but the thing is that this is the deepest crater they have come across and there's older rock strata that might be scraped and tested.

Plus, it's essentially a 'free bonus' as they had expected both Rovers to have gone dead months ago. Both are still working fine... a real 'hoorah' to whoever built them.
