This past election (November 2008), I ran for public office for the first time. I lost in my bid to become a member of the Lake Michigan College Board of Trustees, however, we did exceed expectations, especially since I was running as a Libertarian.

We estimated that I would receive around 3000 votes. I ended up with over 10,000. In the months following the election, the college has had their fair share of public gaffs that has lead many people to write Letters to the Editor to our local newspaper, basically proclaiming that either they were glad they voted for me or they should have voted for me. Add to that the many emails I've received and you have the recipe for another run in 2010.

I will not seek a seat on the same board in 2010 though. See originally I wanted to run for County Commissioner in 2008. However, out of respect to my friend (who was our county chair at the time), I didn't because he's an attorney who often represented the county in court. He was worried about a potential conflict of interest working for the county yet supporting someone who may unseat a current board member.

My friend is now in private practice and no longer our local chairman, so in 2010 I will run for County Commissioner, once again as a Libertarian. I have a campaign kick off dinner planned on my birthday (June 20th) and the website will go live at that time. I already have 25 people who have bought dinner tickets from my campaign team. Hopefully more will show up after we advertise it a bit more (Got a radio interview coming up).

Should be another fun year of campaigning. I enjoyed the hell out of it the last go around. Politics may not be for everyone, but to me its a very cool hobby. I don't expect to win but I believe I can put up a fight. The incumbent hasn't had an opponent in the General Election for over 10 years. At the minimum, I'm going to make her actually work to keep her seat.

    Just wanted to share.

Good for you. Especially that you're running as Libertarian.

I don't care what party you represent. Participating in our democracy strengthens it. It's nice to see that you don't just sit on the sidelines, throw barbs, and bitch all the time.

Best of luck in future races.

I've been involved with the Libertarian Party since 2000. I've served as county chair twice, vice-chair once & country rep once. I've also served on a few national party boards/caucuses over the years as well.

The National Party seems to be moving in a more, how can I put this, republican-light direction. Whatever, I follow my heart.

Considering Libertarians couldnt seem to make up their minds as to whether they want almost no government, or a totally laissez faire watchdog.. And since the Colin Powell's and Meghan McCains want to turn the GOP into Democrat-Lite.. that's a good thing.

Just keep the Paulians from hijacking the party and it's fine. wont even ask if you're Lib-Lib or Con-Lib.
