Riether and Frei Rumors

Both Sky Sports and Kicker are reporting that the Bundesliga club Schalke 04 are interested in a move for Sascha Riether. Even though his move to Fulham was just completed, it could be that Fulham purchased him just to resell him at a profit. There are also reports floating around that Galatasary is once again trying to purchase Kerim Frei. I feel like this rumor has been popping up for at least a year, but this time they are backed up by quotes from the team president and Kerim's father.

On the Sascha Riether rumor, I have trouble believing it would happen. The Schalke GM has admitted they won't pay a very high fee for him. Even if they were to pay £3M for him, leaving a £1.8M profit, Fulham would still need to find a right back and would only have £1.8M to do it. Chances are you can't find a replacement player anywhere close to Riether's quality for that price. The only way I could see sense in the move is if Fulham are confident that Jack Grimmer is ready for the first team this season and/or Riether has expressed interest in returning to Germany. Riether seems to have enjoyed his time at Fulham, and will get much more playing time there than he would for Schalke. However, we've seen before that the draw of Champions League Football can be a big one.

The Frei rumor actually makes more sense to me. Here's a quick list of player who could play on the LW for Fulham: Kerim Frei, Alexander Kacaniklic, Ashkan Dejagah, Damien Duff, Kieran Richardson, Pajtim Kasami, Mesca, Hugo Rodallega, and Bryan Ruiz. Now to be fair, not all of those players are best used there; and some are better when used on the right versus the left. However, it does show the depth Fulham have in wide midfield. Frei might once again struggle to get playing time in that group and if he has another season with injuries and very little playing time, his value is only going to drop. However he could have a very good U-20 World Cup performance, and his value might never be higher than it is following the tournament. I myself would rather him stay then go, but I could see how it is in his interest to move on. Especially to a club that is in the Champions League. If Galatasary were to overpay a bit, say £4-6M, the money could be used to buy a similar but more versatile player. Someone like Scott Sinclair or Gylfi Sigurdsson perhaps. Or the money could be used to fill a position of greater need, like a creative central midfield player.

Chances are of course this is just more silly season nonsense and nothing will come out of either rumor. They only serve to remind me how anxious I am for the season to start so that I have something more concrete to think about.

It would be the essence of Martin Jol to take a young player we've developed and ship him off so we can use a 30-something loanee in the squad instead.

Well, Jol has ALWAYS been responsible for the players transferred in who succeeded. When players come in and don't do well, that's the board's fault.

In all seriousness, the Manager usually has a HUGE say in who comes in or goes out. Most managers won't sign a contract without veto power.

in the short term, if reither is sold i will be very, very disappointed. as for frei, i think he has some quality that just needs to be bled at the top flight - of which he hasn't had a good run in of matches to show his stuff - i don't know, this seems like a broken record at this point re frei. dude should seek employment elsewhere for the sake of his own career.

Frei would be a solid transfer assuming we keep Kaca long term. Sasha goes and we are left not only scrambling for a replacement but losing a huge asset to the squad.

The Sascha rumor seems pretty far fetched, and probably coming from the Schalke camp, makes absolutely no sense in practical terms. I'm sure Frei is looking for an opportunity to play and enhance his international career. A huge concern (aside the fact he refuses to acknowledge his left foot exists) was the kid kept getting hurt last season. Would prefer for him to stay and given the chance to compete for playing time, but if a ridiculous offer is made I couldn't blame the club taking it.

The more I think about Frei, the more I think that he would probably be better off going elsewhere. I would like for him to stay as he is an exciting possibility, but I just don't see him getting in the starting lineup. And you're right we should take any ridiculous offer. But what would consider ridiculous if he didn't feature that much?

A little article about the Galatasaray rumor. Notice that Frei is only quoted as saying he wants to get back into the Fulham first team. I wonder how much influence his Turkish dad has on his career? For a player who hasn't played very much 5 or 6 million would seem pretty ridiculous.

Schalke seem pretty confident they can sign Riether

Schalke are confident of prising defender Sascha Riether away from Fulham.

The 30-year-old was Fulham's player of the year last season following his loan switch from Cologne and his form prompted Martin Jol to sign the German on a permanent basis.
However, Schalke are desperate to bring him back to the Bundesliga, despite the fact he recently completed his transfer to Fulham.
And the German club's sporting director Horst Heldt feels a deal could be struck in the coming months.
When asked about Riether, he told Kicker: "We are not negotiating at the moment. [But] if we work hard and continue we hope that the commitment will come about."
