Ahead of the Villa game against Cols Crew.. Shawn Mitchell, one of the best club Press reporters in the country wrote on how the EPL differs from American Sport Leagues.

Here's an interesting quote from Martin O'Neill:
gasp... a footy manager in England who pays attention to other sports and how they are run?

    He's a heretic.

    Takes one to know one.

First question, who gets to participate in said draft?

Tough one, you could do all English individuals who are 18 at the time of the draft and give the team who draft the player exclusive Premier League rights to sign the player for five years.

But then of course there would just be a rush to sign them before 18 and could enter the draft. And what if the drafted player is owned by a lower division club, they can't just give the player away, and even if teams were required to still pay a fee you would lose the driving force of a bidding war. Maybe you'd have to go to an arbitration system to determine compensation. And what happens in the case of relegation? Does the relegated team forgo all player rights it has?

I like the draft system and its fun to think about it in the EPL but its not a natural fit. Its as likely as promotion/relegation is in US sports.

You're missing the point. We have a draft over here in football and basketball and soccer because our lower divisions are the colleges and -- in basketball -- the basketball-only-prep-schools.

In Europe, sports at the university level is generally poor -- those sillies actually go to university to learn something. The only quality Uni graduate I've ever heard of playing in the English top flight in the last 40 years or so-- Americans excluded, of course -- was Steve Heighway with Liverpool in the 70s.

Also, Spencer, your scenario presupposes a pool of uncommitted quality 18-year-olds. The reality is that if you're any good, you're signed to some sort of apprentice contract by 16.

Apples and Oranges, don't'cha know. As far as O'Neill following pointy football, I wouldn't bet on that either. It's just smart to bone up on what interests the guy who writes your checks. And O'Neill is SMART!

Martin O'Neill is actually a huge NFL, American football fan. Loves American sports. I think in the thread about "Moneyball" there are a couple of Guardian articles that mention this.

Aidy Boothroyd at Watford follows American sports as well, but maybe from a purely sports management interest. O'Neill actually is a big fan though.

He's a Scottish version of all of us.
