Glenn Reynolds warns against party coziness in tax day demonstrations

WSJ: How the tea parties could change American politics.

This is not really news if you've followed these. While it would seem they draw from GOP voters, the people realize that the GOP has been the problem and not part of the solution.
Unfortunately, the Tea Party organizers in Madison didnt think about this and a RINO, Paul Ryan, burrowed himself into the gathering, effectively nullifying it.

Now, I freely disclose that I was -rabidly- FOR the original infusion. The reason of course is that we had no idea what real damage had been done and how bad it really was. Probably some, like Ryan, still dont but it's becoming apparent that the T&C's in the cure are worse than the disease itself.

Despite the dangers of Tea Parties excluding electeds from either party being used to prove some voters are joining RW subversive {meaning they dont agree with the administration} groups, it's always been clear that the people themselves must be in charge.

Glenn Beck is the marquee name here in River City. All the publicity has swirled around his name, so we're absolutely certain that the event will be completely non-partisan and a spontaneous outpouring of South Texas opinion.

The fact that these spontaneous outpourings are all happening on the same day in 300 communites in all 50 states should not lead the misinformed to think that it's part of any organized national political movement.

It kills me. As an old school conservative who disdained the buyouts, what are we to do.

    Dang, Goldwater's still dead.

    Oh, geez!

I dunno if Don is referring to Beck's apocalyptic views or not, but there's another guy shouldnt be showing up. All it does is make some think there is something to the DHS document and the Prez' Monday speech, other than the obvious propaganda from the Rahm Emanuel brainstorm bunch that it is.
I like Beck and listened to him on the radio for years and, while I actually agree with most of what he says, Beck is there to get ratings and is only one-upping Olbermann's conspiracy boilerplate.

Like Hannity, his presence lends credence to the LW nutjobs that FNC is subsidizing the things. Hannity makes it clear that isnt the case, and I assume Beck does too.. but the presence of both, even as non-promoting obserevers is a mistake.

Some local channels, Fox affiliates to boot, even pass on this crap as factual.
Want a feelgood article on how the tea parties have already changed people and rewarded them for their perseverance through hard times?

I don't understand why that's a bad thing for the GOP. Remember the old adage "the enemy of my enemy is my friend"? Although I've never known the GOP for being very good at wrangling protesters under their umbrella, it's a start for them.

Ron Paul is/was against income tax, favoring taxes on goods and services instead. The theory being that if people had more take home pay in their wallets, they would only spend more. When I lived in Australia, I saw it in practice - it works. While Mitt Romney laughed at the notion, I've never heard anyone intelligent dispel the notion that it couldn't/wouldn't work. Personally, I think the only reason the income tax is still around is so that the government always has an ace up their sleeve if they want to screw with you - and the IRS/tax laws are the ultimate strongarm.

RE: Re: Parties and Tea Parties

Of course.. but PLEASE dont bring up 'Ron Paul'. As in the tea parties, you are corrupted by those you allow to associate with you.
It doesnt matter if many of Paul's ideas {other than the idiotic 'Gold Standard' crap} would work and make sense. His appeal to REAL RW nutjobs AND their thug activities on the net, took him out early.

That's the whole point of this thread. And Ron Paul is the WORST current example.

Awfully snarky there. I would have pegged you to take some measure of solace in seeing a potential fracture in the most recent incarnation of the republican party.

To a certain extent, these things have been ongoing for a few years now. Query: why are they receiving so much attention this particular year? They'll be 20 different answers to that question and probably they're all correct.

Simply amazing! What's your opinion Don? This is an opening of the Pods by directive from the 'Rovian Mother Ship'?
And why no comment on Rick Perry's idiot secession statements? That surely proves the theme of this thread, that the elected should be kept the hell away from these parties!

Screw Perry and the idiots... let the Blue States secede or kick the Red States out. After all, the Blue States are 'the financial, fiscal and Creative center' of the country*. Let the poor yokels in 'Middle America' flounder without their enlightened guidance and beg to be let back into the Union!

How's about we give that a try?

    * Yes, that was actually written in a national publication some years ago. Probably by a midwestern small town girl who went to collich then, once enlightened, headed for the big time.

News flash: as a result of their combined, concerted efforts, the Republican Party has lost control of both houses of Congress and the executive branch. This loss of control is temporary, but it does mean that the government no longer makes decisions that Fox News applauds and Rush Limbaugh tells everyone else to applaud. You see, some times people vote for folks that don't win [don't I know it]. When that happens, those who have recently lost out can either learn from their mistakes and get closer to the center of what is important to the electorate, or they can whine and create disunity. Which will it be?

    I wonder ... .

Rick Perry is a hairdo looking for a brain to sit atop. He couldn't secede his ass from his toilet seat without written instructions.

Looks like I'll be supporting Kay Bailey [que paso] Hutchinson in her bid to unseat this dilletante.

You cannot increase spending the way we have w/o increasing the tax burden at some point. That it hasn't happened yet is a simple matter of timing. The changes will come this year, guaranteed.

But (and maybe I'm alone in this) the primary point of the rallies was not the tax codes, but to communicate displeasure with the massive spending increases, both to the current elected officials and more to the point, to the Pubs that have forgone fiscal conservatism this past decade (and got them beat the past 2 elections). The same thing Don says they should do in one breath and then called whining and disunity in the next. Lemme guess, Fox News Conspiracy?

I try to avoid comment on Perry at all costs. Especially his college ties.

yeah, I thought calling them tea parties originated with Rick Santelli's "rant" on CNBC. The basis of the complaint is that those who have managed to save and pay their bills are having to bail out everyone. It's kind of like the story of the tortoise and hare except at the end you feel bad that the hare has to loose so you give him a car so he can drive, nice and rested, to the finish line just as the tortoise crosses it, dead tired.

I'm gonna have me one of those parties.

BTW 'Fog, love the link to the song.

Fair point, Matt. Here's the problem:

    1. Like Pettyfog, I disagreed with the scope and execution of both bailouts -- both administrations were guilty of trying to be seen to be doing something rather than to take the time to examine where the fault is and fixing the problem rather than ameliorating the result.

    2. Unlike Pettyfog, I've been bitching about deficit spending for several years now.

    3. My problem with the tea parties is that they were created and have been orchestrated NOT to provide any solutions, but to trash this administration. They are not "the people articulating their concern" -- they are "the people parroting the criticisms they're hearing from Rush and FoxTV.

    4. This irks me because this exact sort of criticism related to Enron and profligate no-bid contracts was treated as "PROVIDING AID AND COMFORT TO THE ENEMY WHEN TROOPS ARE IN THE FIELD." We were told that criticizing the government was tantamount to treason.

    5. Screw tantamount -- seriously discussing secession in an effort to stir up people against the government IS treason.

    6. And, finally, what did it take for the "new conservatives" to suddenly embrace fiscal conservatism? What got everyone on Fox exercised enough to orchestrate this entire Tea Party "movement?" Why, the president's pledge to allow to slip the tax cuts for the wealthy.

So, yeah; my criticism of public outcry against the bailouts appears incongruous. Yes, under other circumstances I'd be thrilled to see so many people publicly supporting sound financial policy. My problem is that this venue is tainted -- not only by coat-tailing politicians like Governor Hairdo -- but by the fact that they have been created and orchestrated by people whose avowed goal is the abject failure of the current adminstration. I'd feel a lot better if the protests were designed to contribute to the administration's effort to succeed.

We just had 6 years of "there's nothing wrong; why do you hate America," followed by two years of "Congress is responsible for the entire mess," leading to "everything is wrong because we have a socialist, fascist, muslim in the White House."

I'd like to see some coherent contributions, but something that fair and balanced is not what we're going to see from Fox News and Rush Limbaugh.

Upon rereading this, I think I'm still pretty much in agreement with Pettyfog about all this.

Yep, would be better to have Kinky Friedman in charge. Actually, I have yet to get my head around Texas politics. Although I have met Barbara Jackson Lee since I've moved to Houston. She's my Representative in Congress. Perry seems like a serious governor, but he's looking to gain some name recognition nationally with his over the top rhetoric. He's not a yahoo, by any stretch of the imagination from what I can tell. He's no Ron Paul.

Well, you are totally wrong if you think this all about FOX and Rush. I dont listen or watch either, never have, and I feel the same way as the tea party protestors. Same with most of the people that I work with, most of whom are immigrants with some coming from socialist countries. This idea didnt originate with FOX, it originated from Rick Santelli of CNBC.

I agree. You're sons will be paying off our country's debt their whole lives probably. I don't blame Obama really, but Congress. They don't have the balls (no pun intended) to just say no to interest groups anymore, both on the left and right.

More of the same Dubya bash from Don, but I'm surprised at your take, Spencer. I thought you were a student of 'political science'.

Do you actually expect solutions to come out of protests? And where's it written that there has to be a single tactical focus?

The purpose of the tea parties is to let the elected and appointed know that they serve at the pleasure of the electorate. Please read back in the thread where I put down the position of most that there should not be party focus or affiliation.

The second purpose of the tea parties is to let the media know that the great unwashed middle is no longer going to accept fringification by the metropolitan media.
You want me to post some video links of CNN ridiculing the people going there... and by ridiculing I mean to the point of bad frat-boy puns using sexual innuendo 'teabagging = balls on chin'.

Do you REALLY think it's just a coincidence that the DHS report was 'leaked' a few days prior? How many of these coincidences will it take?

Why is there silence on here from you two when I point out the connections when things happen on the left? No comment on Soros making a billion on this fiasco. No comment or weak rebuttal whenever the CAUSE of this great malaise is discussed other than adolescent-like "yeah but HE HIT ME FIRST!!!"

The CAUSE of the 'GREEDY BANKERS' going bust in the first place!!! And then Don will chime in with some 'so... poor people dont deserve a home?'
This makes me ill. Just like pouty children.

So... the position of you lefties is that the people should just stay home and trust the professionals.

I'm gonna summarize the tea parties again:

"We hold you accountable. Throwing money at a problem doesnt fix it and making our kids pay is unfair"

Now if you want to get SPECIFIC I'm going to point out AGAIN that GM should have gone straight into bankruptcy. And THAT is said by many and most on the side.
But that didnt happen even though NOW the admin, after pumping in 50 Billion or so has said that's likely the outcome. But it will be swift and streamlined and most likely leave the union contracts least affected.

My family thanks the Administration for that but what it means is that the US will remain the defacto administrator of 'Government Motors' for the foreseeable future. But the taxpayer gets no voting shares... only the government.
