Anyone know if Alonso or US Soccer (not sure who has to do it) have applied to FIFA for approval to represent the USA. This needs to happen. It would mean an end to the Beckerman call-ups and would give us a real weapon at defensive mid.
Then you are not watching or following MLS enough. He defected from Cuba when he played for them in Houston some number of years back and now has a stellar career in MLS. He just got his US citizenship in 2012. The question, as I understand it, is will he be allowed to represent the USA since he represented Cuba a double digit number of times and captained their side. Common sense says, "yes" FIFA should allow him to switch since his country's laws regarding his ability to play soccer professionally are in direct conflict with FIFA's and that is why he defected. But god knows what excuse FIFA will Blatter back in regards to a request grounded in human rights and not Qatari money. He is a wonderful player for Seattle - an MLS All star and regularly named in the MLS best XI as a defensive mid. No one in MLS tackles, gets the 50/50, or is in the right spot for the rebound or second ball he way he is. Against Chelsea in the All Star game last summer, he was a stand out.
Yes, I do know who he is. I had a senior moment there. I remember the player but the name was more elusive.
So if Klinsmann comes up with another German born midfielder to replace Beckerman there won't be any whinging right?
