Get this... guy has nice house, drives a Prius.. supposedly subscribes to all the right-think causes.

But the Redwood trees in his yard block sun from neighbor's solar panels.

The trees were planted BEFORE the solar system was installed, but it doesnt matter, law still says they have to go.

Read the article: The couple would have crumbled but they are fighting it because the law needs fighting; it has enormous precedent implications.

I also have to assume there's a separate California law exempting solar installation from neighborhood association 'eyesore nuisance' codicils. What a mess!

Well, does it matter? The law as written is clear... amazingly.

If a prior planted -but after 1979- tree GROWS to shade the solar, it is subject. SHAME on them for planting trees that grow.

The ONLY OTHER contention could be if they planted them AFTER learning of the plans for the array.

    Here's ANOTHER problem:
    Highlights are mine.

What that MEANS is that any homeowner can add a Sun Room, line it with fieldstone to absorb heat, demonstrate that it works as 'thermal flywheel' thus is environmentally friendly; and then sue the neighbor to cut his trees if they were planted after 79.

    And ANOTHER:
Apparently only 'better' counts... uglier is NOT a factor.

And yes... a Republican {California Republican, though} wrote this.

Given California's energy problems, I can't blame them for having such laws on the books.

And, 'Fog, you REALLY need to go back and re-read Don's post; I laughed so hard my coworkers popped their heads over the cube walls to find out what happened.

heh... okay, so I only got PART of it.

Too bad it took me so long. 'Cause now I cant laugh.

    -sigh-

And you cant blame them? When their energy problems are of their OWN MAKING?

the same state where they want to be able to control your house temperature from Sacramento?

Note that they DONT say they want to be able to shut off POOL HEATERS?

'fog - as in they are trying to address it. You may not agree with the method, but at least the law addresses an issue impacting the state, unlike so many others that are passed around the country.

The best story I heard was green people building homes in Northern California, i.e., surrounded by thousands of trees who demanded solar panels built in patches of land surrounded by trees. The solar panel guy wouldn't do it of course because it would cost more to install than it would give back in energy.

    F'ing stupid California.
