A few words after watching him for 45 minutes:

fast, strong, smart, committed, active, decisive. He has good anticipation, is a solid tackler, and knows how to steer danger away from his penalty area.

I think that, added to Boca, Gooch, and Cory Gibbs, the USMNT has centre-back covered at least through South Africa 2010. :3d smile: :big grin: :D

yes, sounds like he would definitely be valuable to the Nat squad.

But correct me if I'm wrong,...
he didn't even get a sniff from the (US Soccer) organization dispite a few people (including his Watford coach) lobbying for him.
    Seems odd.

He didn't develop through the usual system, he pretty much ignored the MLS. He was off everyone's radar screen until Watford signed him. I was a little surprised that Arena didn't call him up, but then ... oh well, why hash it over again.

I can't see how the USSF can ignore him now. If he's good enough to start in the Prem, he's at least worth a look-see.

Yeah I was impressed with him today, I herd alot about Jay and today was the first time seeing him play. If Watford get relegated I could see Jay staying in the Premier League or going to a top flight club in another league.

He better get onto the US MNT. They need some European experience. Him, Bocanegra and Gooch would be perfect.

Did anyone read the article about him in Sports Illustrated? Great story. I was surprised to flip open and find a picture with soccer players (How many times do you read about soccer in SI) and then find out it's Jay DeMerit!

I agree, it was a very good story. It also does a good job of explaining how important the playoff final is and how promotion/relegation works.

What a great story! I didn't know DeMerit's history. From what I've seen, he's a great, hard working, talented player who definitely deserves a spot on the USMNT. I'd love to see him at Fulham someday!

    Well, this sucks canal water:

    http://www.yanks-abroad.com/get.php?mod ... nt&id=3530

When I saw Watford had lost 0-3, I had a feeling that something was up. I hate to see any young kid get hurt, but I really like this crazy cheesehead.

Get well soon, and get your ass back to the premiership!

NOTE: Fog -- this thread should be in the "Yanks Over There" section.

I thought he played well when he got his chances with the MNT during the Gold Cup. I think he is a solid addition to the US team.

I watched Watford play on Setanta in October maybe and DeMerit was the heart of the team and defense it looked like. He's short for a central defender and not that fast, but lots of heart and guts. He's probably a smart player too. When he was playing in the Fall Watford was on top of the league and now they're not.

Maybe he's not 100% or Boothroyd doesn't want to tinker.

    Who knows?

I think Boothroyd is to be believed. He loves the Cheesehead. Once it was certain that Watford was going down last season, he gave DeMerit a couple weeks off so that he would be able to do both the Gold Cup and the Copa America. He's had nothing but good to say about the lad, and I think it's always been Aidy's plan to have Jay lead the Dirty Yellows back to the Prem.
