Style of play is critical to growing a new league
This could fit in any of the footy forums, but it IS about MLS.

Style is important when watching teams play. If you are a neutral observer, you want to watch teams that go at the other one attacking and not just sitting back with ten men behind the ball.

That being said, for the MLS connoisseurs, which MLS teams play with good style? Which one are dull?

It's hard to say... overall, I think ALL the teams are playing better, stylistcally.

KC as mentioned is notable UNTIL they get ahead. I think Red Bulls most marked improvement.

It's not just numbers of long-ball attack on offense and players in front of the ball on defense, though... it's how the transitions are managed and that's one of the more difficult things to assess when you're rooting for one side to win. You have a wholly different focus.

I take issue w/Mr. Davis. I don't find Chelsea's or Liverpool's style at all "un-entertaining." Possibly, he's judging Chelsea and Liverpool on the basis of their two-headed ECL semifinal.

For pure style and class -- regardless of how much their own fans are frustrated by it -- in the EPL you can't beat Arsene Wenger's Arsenal.

Davis's quote is a good basis for a fitba discussion, alright, but I think he's full of crap.

I find Serie A the most boring, good teams and good players, but I get bored very quickly.

I agree kwdawson. I just can't seem to get into this league all that much. I am not too fond of the German Bundesliga either, but this year it seems to have gotten better. Of the international leagues, I find myself watching the Premiership the most by far followed by the French and Spanish leagues.

Who's Glen Davis? Did he used to sing with the country lady with long hair?

Serie A MIGHT be interesting if they ever got sell-out crowds, and then those crowds behaved themselves. Big pat on the back to the FA for getting that mostly taken care of.

    Energie!!! (That's my Bundesliga team.)

I'll take my best crack at the MLS element of this

    Bad
Houston- they get the job done but they like the long ball no nonsense stuff, very reliant on the crosses to the big man(Ching) and the little man (Danglish) to chase, its not dreadful cause they're good at it but not much fun to watch either

Toronto-cause they suck at everything they try to do! four passes in a row? forget about it! we'll just play another aimless long ball to lone man Dichio

Crew- ok columbus people on here know better than I but my impression is that they try lots of different styles and at best are mediocre at all of them. They have some skill but not great skill. So after failing to master the "style of the week" they default into bunker mode after 20 minutes and hope to nick a goal

    Good

DC(sorta)- they've been the best, most fluid, pretty, and entertaining BUT they suck this year and are terribly predictable

    Everyone else(sorta)- I'd say everyone else runs hot cold, catch em on the right day and you'll see a great eye opening game. Catch em on the wrong day and you'll be endlessly frustrated shouting things like;
"do you have to make a back pass everytime?!?"
"a disabled 10 year old could have beat that defense!"
"why is Rob Stone an apologist for this pathetic mess of a game, just say what it is Rob, pathetic and boring!"

25% of the time they play good, quality soccer. 25% of the time its dire and unwatchable. 50% theres a bit of both.

That's not exactly as I see it but close enough I wont debate it
That's about right. But isnt it that way, more or less in any 1st Div league?

I watched most of the second half last night between Colorado and Real Salt Lake and I was well entertained. Nice up and down football. Scoring chances for both sides as well. That new Dick's Sporting Goods Park looks very nice on TV.

Adu actually looked decent. As did Cunningham and Colorado's kepper. The rest, not so much.

Still, seriously, who is Glen David?

Lots of stuff to filter through, but being a former Stoner was the part that really caught my eye.

So why is this guy's opinion important or news worthy?

Because he's been one of the best, most read, soccer writers in the US for the last ten years; at the Houston Chronicle {I believe} for all that time.

he's had nothing to do with the league, no 'perks' etc to influence him.

..As opposed to 'Eve' Galarcep, who's an ass-buddy of whatever is in control of the NY team.
