Well, after the craptacular performance of today, time to look towards Wednesday.

One thing I can think of is that Hangeland and Zamora are still hurting. Hangeland looked almost laughable today; he never looked anywhere near that bad since he signed for the Ws. Zamora is not 100%, I think he is trying to tough it out but he isn't fit.

    My lineup
    -----------------Schwarzer
    Kallio --- Smalling --- Hughes -- Kelly
    Duff --- Murphy ----- Baird ---- Gera
    -------------Nevland-------Elm

Hangeland plays no more than a half, same for Zamora.

I hope Pompey is the cure for what ails us.

The Cottagers did not play that bad considering the amount of injuries there were. Granted Hangeland did not look good on Agbonlahor's second goal but isn't he playing at around 75%? Villa's defense is very good. I just hope they can turn it around vs. Portsmouth at the cottage.

How about Nevland and Zamora to start and someone other than Baird in the middle? And where is Jonathan Greening?

I agree with Dave. We looked bad today, but Villa's defense might be the 2nd best in the Prem right now. Agbonlahor's two goals were very well taken. We had a lot of the ball and we caused them some problems.

I like your lineup except you have the natural LB playing RB and the natural RB playing LB. I'd start Zamora, but I'd definitely bring in Elm again. The first 5 minutes against Pompey will be telling. They've just lost their best player in Kaboul, and they sold both their GK's, so we want as much pressure on them from the off as possible. This is no time to experiment with Elm.

We win this one 2-0, and carry on to have a very good month of February.

Whoops, my bad -- I'm not in the Army anymore, this whole left/right thing is too much for me now. Viva civilian life.

Right, the match is tomorrow. Setanta is airing it live, and then again at 645 and 1030 or something.

Hopefully some people can get into the chat room for it. Last weeks match against Spurs had zero.

Anyways, Roy said on the offal that Okaka and Shorey will go straight into the lineup as 7 players will be out. By my count they are: AJ, Pants, Demps, PK, Etuhu, Gera, and Davies. So I would expect something like:

    Oz
    Kelly--Hughes--Hangs--Shorey
    Riise--Baird--Murphy--Duff
    Zamora--Okaka

Subs: Zubs, Smalling, Stoor, Greening, TheEvidence, Nevland, Elm

Also, Roy said AJ will be "out for a further considerable time." What a crock.

I saw Gera roll his ankle, but seemed to finish okay. Portsmouth has been a dumpster fire and I do have sympathy for their plight right now. I remember the home fans at Fratton Park applauding our fans and team for the great escape, very classy. I don't care if it's a lucky break, a Murphy pk, a Pompey og, just as long as the lads in White have one more goal than the visitors when the final whistle blows.

I could have sworn that I saw an advertisement for the game being televised either on FSC or ESPN2; more likely FSC. But it's not listed anywhere, so I guess I'm seeing things. Wouldn't be the first time...

I never saw it listed on either channel, bc.

About the goalkeeper question, it was a "certainty" that Begovic was going to Spurs and Calamity James was going to Stoke City. As it turned out it was Begovic that went to Stoke. If James is staying, then the club obviously feels as if they can (a) pay the players on time in February AND (b) eat the huge cash outlay if James plays either 5 or 6 more matches this season, that will kick in an automatic bonus.

They're without Kaboul and Begovic -- the two quality players in their defense. They made all these deals, by the way, without consulting the COO, the director of football/manager, so this match should most appropriately be an episode of "Dream Team."

    We'd better win this fekker!!

And I'll try to make an appearance in the chatroom.

Pompey are so hosed right now, I can't post links fast enough -- just surf around soccernet, the guardian, or what have you. To use a military axiom, they may be tits up in the mud before the season is over.

This game is like the away game at Derby County game that was a few weeks before The Great Escape -- we should win it, end of story. Yes, I know how that game ended up. I wonder who they will even field -- there will have to be some players no one has heard of on the field or the bench.

Steve, you just had to bring up Derby County didn't you?

All I know is that Avram Grant aka The Undertaker is perfect to be managing a team that leads the Relegation Death Pool.

My fault, I didn't realize that not enough time had passed yet.

re: James. Stoke wouldn't take on his full salary for the loan, and Pompey wasn't willing to pay some of his salary for him to play for a competitor. I think it was a mistake; Pompey can't afford to be picky about how it saves money.

I'll go with 0-0. I don't expect much from Pompey, especially after the club failed to pay them again today (according to Sky). Unfortunately, unless whoever mans the wings changes how they've been playing the position, I don't like our chances for putting one into the back of the net either. We've been snakebit enough this year, we are definitely due for a lucky bounce and I'll gladly take it.

Well, we'll get a good idea of how well we did in the transfer period:

    FULHAM v PORTSMOUTH LINE-UPS
Fulham: Schwarzer, Kelly, Hughes, Hangeland, Shorey, Duff, Murphy, Baird, Greening, Okaka Chuka, Zamora. Subs: Zuberbuhler, Nevland, Riise, Stoor, Smalling, Dikgacoi, Elm.

Portsmouth: James, Finnan, Wilson, Ben-Haim, Belhadj, Yebda, Basinas, Boateng, O'Hara, Dindane, Piquionne. Subs: Ashdown, Rocha, Mullins, Owusu-Abeyie, Vanden Borre, Webber, Hughes.
    Referee: Anthony Taylor (Cheshire)

Even if it was nothing to look at, it wasn't like I wanted to spend a lot of time looking. Only had the GJ feed, but it sounded like no one had a bad game, per se, but not many ...

Ah, hell with it -- a win is a win, and six weeks in between them is too long. Nice work Greening, and Shorey, and Hangeland. Let's get another at The World's Most Boring Team on Saturday.

Judging from GJ's comments, Shorey looks as good as I'd hoped he would, and Okaka -- his glaring miss notwithstanding -- was active and has promise. I just hope his miss doesn't do for him what similar misses did for EJ and Gera.

The stunner for me is that Hughes almost scored. If I'm not mistaken, he went through the last two seasons without even taking a shot!

No reason why we can't get 4-6 points off our next two matches. Bring 'em on!

Didn't get to see it, but glad of win. Need to check out Shorey and Okaka, but so sad re: Kamara loan deal.
