It must be nice being a friend of the establishment...

Don't get me wrong, the President has every ability to offer up a pardon where deemed appropriate and I don't deny him (or her... someday) that executive privelege.

But simply to commute the sentence of a known perjurer in a case where the President swore to the public that he would hold accountable all involved is well, pretty frickin' ballsy... It is now obvious that the Administration does not hold themselves accountable to the law or the public. Misdeed is, if not rewarded, at the bare minimum condoned.

I know the President is inviting historians to WH to guage how he and his administration will be viewed in future history... I can only guess how much lower his administration will rate on the scale of history than his father's.

Hmmm... you want me to go through the Bill Clinton 'pardon' list? Count the actual crooks who took millions? Note the Libby conviction still stands, it was a COMMUTATION, unlike the previous administration's.

Maybe you ought to engage 'big picture' brain cells...

You want to look up Bill Clinton's source of incomes?

You know who his main corporate client is?

A guy who sells DB lists ... one of whose big buyers sorts out elderly pensioners to sell, by cold-calling.

I'm sorry for jumping right on this, MNL.... but you libs are so used to drinking the Democrat kool-aid that you have really bizarre memory-loss thresholds when it comes to your own.

SOME people though will easily turn on ANYONE who betrays the trust of the constituency.... not just the political agenda.

    Here's a list of MINE:

    Mike Dewine note he's GONE
    Ted Stevens
Trent Lott - probably soon WILL be gone!
    Dubya {for not understanding the immigration issue, letting his heart overcome his head}
McCain - for trying to shut down free political speech, in favor of ultra rich people funding 'grass roots' movements by loopholes.

Petty, how did I know the Clinton analogy would be the first thing out of your mouth?...we all knew this was coming from Bush at some point and it is totally the administration's perogative.

The appellate process should have run the course before his sentence was commuted or pardoned...who knows, mabye his conviction would have been overturned and the political heat avoided.

Now, can somebody explain to me how the vice-president isn't in the executive branch?? hahahahahahahahaha

You dont get it either... The conviction stands! Appeals process goes on.... and will YOU explain to me why it's an issue?
Willl you explain to me why Libby NEEDS to go to jail?

Will you explain to me why the REAL leaker wasnt charged, and the case went on despite the Special Prosecutor actually KNOWING who did the leaking on the issue?

Will you then explain how it wasnt just a witchhunt? Especially as one of the memos handed over by Libby actually contradicted his memory of the timeline?

I assume you are ready and willing to see the case against William Jefferson, Dem LA go on to trial?

And finally is this about me ... or is it about the TRUE FACTS in the case?

I take it you are incensed that ANYONE defends a republican?

I take it you are like the jury memeber who was pissed off that Cheney wasnt charged... perhaps you can poinbt out specifically what he should be charged with?

While you're at it... do a little f##$G research and tell me the difference between what Bob Ney resigned his congressional seat over and what Sen Feinstein did in steering milions in Defense contracts to her husband's company?

If a Dem, does it... it's all okay just say: "Ooops my bad, let's move on!"

    F@$%$#%$ g Hypocrites!

Re: RE: Free Scooter Libby! Oh wait, it already happened

Jefferson is a scumbag and I put him right up there with the worst of them. I can't believe that (a) he got re-elected and (b) he still hasn't had to face up to what he's been accused of...

That being said, it is about apardon... and this was never a witch-hunt... it was a prosecutor who was a Bush nominee, selected by a Bush WH administrator, with a case held in front of a judge who was, that's right, a Bush nominee, in a case regarding a Bush nominee... if there was any opportunity for gross neglect in regards to the prosecution, it would have been on the side of protecting a fellow appointee...

And about that protection... here's my favorite little item from the fallout today... Looks like Scooter's pals are really excited that he's going free!

The jail time is about paying the price for what you knowingly did or didn't do... and if it wasn't in this case, then maybe it's justice for all the other willful disregarding of the law that has taken place in the administration... let's call it karmic justice.

I just had to add one more...

The indignation that the governing class has over the commutation (soon to be pardon) is really fun to laugh at...

    Rudy on Pardons

Apparently pardons/commutations are ok when it's the guy on your own team.

    1. The commutation is dead, or as good as.
    2. Scooter Libby is irrelevant

Thought I'd beat the self-righteous rush

No shit, the appeals process goes on because he'd like to see the felony and $250K fine wiped from his record. My post simply stated I would have liked to see the appellate process invoked to the end without any intervention, and maybe I was inarticulate because I failed to state the evidence was dicey and fodder for a good appellate lawyer. Too bad the lying little bitch would've had to spend some time in the minimum security country club first. Anyone who perjures themself should go to jail - Dem, GOP, Greeny, whomever.

And the Clinton strawman is always pulled out...although I intended it as a joke. And, I love the seriousness with which you throw tangent issues (Ney, Jefferson, Feinstein) into the discussion of Libby's commuted sentence, advising that I should do some research. Please, from your omniscient throne on high, Mr. Fog, may I only strive to think like you because you, clearly, are the only thinking mammal gracing this fine board.

It's only politics, not life and death.

Damn right I get fired up... but mainly over mis-takes in process and hypocrisy both in and about politics.

That's why Trent Lott is on my list. I havent even had to rail about Dems much recently as my own 'hold yer nose and vote' party has given me all the frustration I need.

Please note, you'll find me winking at Chicago, Boston and NY politics as I think things there pretty much have improved from what they used to be like, more answering to the public and more doing what's good for the cities, overall.

But that doesnt apply to the national assemblies... they are still back in the old days where it was normal to buy votes with federal funding. People arent going to stand for that much longer; which is why most of the Dem leadership and about half the old-guard Republicans want to hide their pork from the public.

    * Thus Mark Rich was able to come back into the US from his exile once he was pardoned.

Libby's commutation does nothing to affect the results of his conviction on his practice of law or any other prejudice that may lawfully, or surrepitituously, be applied against him

And BTW... here was my take on the thing after the trial was over.

Let's say some everyday guy is hauled into court on a felony charge, and the prosecutor found out during the discovery process that he was technically innocent, as the guy had talked about the issues but not put any of those into action. In addition his own records disputed what he said in discovery testimony and he had handed over those records.

But the prosecutor stops trying to find the evidence pertaining to the original case and instead goes for a technical charge because he just doesnt like the guy or the guy's employer.
And he gets the guy to contradict his own records AFTER he finds out the guy was innocent of the charges, themselves.

Wouldnt you say that was a railroad job?

If it was 'Joe Blow', union leader I bet you would. And so would I.

The law is either for everyone or it's only for the select informed and 'politically correct' few.. tell me if I'm wrong.

i agree with don - this whole case is irrelevant.

this case is just like whitewater - no one can ACTUALLY figure out/learn what happened with the leaking, and the uranium, and niger, and the CIA, and robert novak. instead, they just rely on whatever their favorite pundit has to say.

for example, last night olbermann dedicated 40+ minutes to this. cnn had a lot of coverage. fox did not. ergo, liberals get angry and republicans act like its no big deal.

and all that was discussed in the "coverage" was gw's continual "disregard" for the law, and how this will hurt republicans come election time.

well i have news for everyone: NO ONE CARES. and thats not because we'd rather hear about paris hilton, or bombs not exploding in london, or kobayashi eating 1000000+ hotdogs tomorrow. no one cares because (as i said earlier) the initial transgression that led to libby's indictment just doesnt make any sense.

and people dont care for two reasons: its wayyy too complicated, and (subsequently) when the complexities are analyzed its like "figuring out" jean baudrillard - there is nothing to the complexities. it/they're simply fluff.

you can debate my point all you want, but ask the average person the whats the deal with this story and they'll just reiterate whatever their favorite pundit says.

or have no idea what you're talking about.

    {end rant}

Kobayashi's jaw is fit???!!!??? Ah man, the Coney Island showdown is interesting again!

To Petty's post above, under those facts, sir, you are absolutely correct and that situation sounds parallel to the prosecution of the Duke lacrosse players.

THREAD HIJACK ALERT....THREAD HIJACK ALERT.....For those that have never seen the Hot Dog Eating Contest at Coney Island in New York, it is must see TV tomorrow. Kobayashi has been unbeatable the last few years, but from what I have read, he has a jaw problem and cannot open his mouth that wide. In addition, there is an American who recently broke Kobayashi's record. Thus, there will be some drama tomorrow. I am guessing this will be on one of the ESPN family of networks arounf 11AM tomorrow. Check your listings.

From Scooter Libby to Kobayashi without a ruffled hair ... you can't beat dramatic irony in life.

Nor can you beat the Administration's timing in this situation.

    Sigh.
