Round 1 [proper] begins tomorrow with the inclusion for the first time of league clubs. We won't be involved until the 3rd round and, unless we finally have the cup run I've been begging for this year, we'll be out before the 5th.

Last year's pairing of Pompey and CCC side Cardiff is rare, but not unheard of. With about half the Prem managers leaving domestic cup competitions to reserves and youth [better to concentrate on Europe or avoiding relegation], CCC sides and non-top 4 sides have a better chance each year. With all the strength in the top 6 or 8 of the CCC this year, I wouldn't be surprised to see something like last year happening again.

So, here's a little poll for you.

    Guess who I'm voting for?

In our preseason picks I picked Arsenal over Tottenham, so that choice is officially out the window. I think CCCFC has eyes on the league and if their injuries clear up, possibly Europe. Arsenal is just not going to win anything this year -- again. Someone will kick the hell out of them, they'll lose, and Wenger will whine some more. Liverpool and Man U are the best choices of the big 4, says I, especially United as I don't think they'll win the league this year and this is a big chance for a pot.

Unless a Cardiff or Southampton comes out of the woodwork, the only other team that I can see winning it is Villa, but depth is a problem if they want that and a top 4 finish. Especially because top 4 teams beat the likes of Newcastle away.

So, I say ManU, Liverpool, or Villa.

In one of my favorite sports movies 'The Natural' Wilford Brimley's character speaks wistfully that he wouldn't have to win the World Series, but getting there would be enough for him....Just once I would love the boys in white to make a run, it doesn't have to be even have to be to Wembley, but a final 8 or even a semi-final would be amazing.

P.S. And I don't want to hear that bs line "I don't mind we lost, cause we now can focus on the league'

Not my first choice, but Sheffield Wednesday here we come. It will be difficult but you never know what you'll get with the FA Cup.

Histon is hosting the Swans because they beat mighty Leeds United 1-0 in round 2. The only goal was scored by a postman.

Ladies and Germs, THIS is what the FA Cup is all about.

Five bananas for Histon, wherever they are!

I wonder if the USMNT's right back of the future Frankie Simek will finally be healthy enough to get back onto the pitch for SW?? I really thought he was going to push Dolo for a starting spot in 2010, but now he has a long way just to get back into the picture.

Good way to bring in the new year w/a win away and into the 4th round.

Frankie has been on the bench for Wednesday's last two matches. He may well feature against us. It's a good thing we don't have a left winger for him to frustrate!

On paper, we have the best draw of the bunch. But, as someone once [or twice] pointed out, we don't play on paper.

Not bad really. It's not even a tremendously long drive for the boys (like, say, West Ham who have to make the trip up to Hartlepool). Getting into the last 16 would be nice.

I was watching SkySports and they were featuring conference sides Torquay and Kettering and both were hoping for away draws against one of the big 4, worst case a road draw against a Prem side. You have to feel for them as they both drew home matches. At least Kettering got a Prem side in us.

Is the money split they get strictly based on the gate? If so, you have to feel for them. Torquay especially need the cash. I believe they were in administration recently.

Good draw for us though. I'm finally getting into the FA Cup with our involvement this year. Feels very akin to the start of March Madness.

Kettering is a nice town in the middle of a nice region of Northamptonshire -- at least it was when I used to frequent the area in the mid-70's. It should be a comfortable jaunt for the 1200 folk from SW6 who can make the trip.

And Ag, I'm not sure how the money was split either, but I was hoping that Luton would survive to round 3 to go to Liverpool or ManU. The cash might have saved them. There was a time when all league gate receipts were split. That meant that away matchtes to Newcastle, Manchester, Liverpool, and Arsenal/Spurs kept the "little clubs" like Burnley and Fulham and Luton afloat. This gate pooling was something else that went away with the Prem and contributed to the super-rich Big Four sides.

Seems I was right. Gate pooling is 45% per team and 10% to the FA. So a road draw against a big 4 side would net a lower division team 6 figures from that match alone.

And then the clubs get payouts for winning each round and tv.

    Rd 4 Televised Matches:

    Derby v Nott Forest
    Hartlepool v Spam
    ManU v Spurs
    Cardiff v Arsenal
    Liverpool v Everton

So that's one team below the CCC. No non-league teams. And two premier league matches we already see twice a year minimum. Ironically, of the Big 4 omitted, I thought chelsea had one of the more interesting pairings with Ipswich (and Volz).

Apparantly the magic only lasts 3 rds, and then you have to read about it.

Does anyone else get a conspiracy feeling with WestHam's inclusion in that mix? Especially with a new probe forthcoming and potential fines and possible point deductions (still dragging out)?
