What's everyone doing for the World Cup...has anyone bought a new HDtv just for the World Cup?

I've already scheduled Monday, June 12th, off and plan to watch the game in peace in my living room on a sweet 60 inch HDtv. But might head in town to watch in a pub--not sure why, I guess if we pull off a victory I want to be around someone who might actually give a toss.

Anyone else care to share their plans?

    RE: Everyone

I just took off June 9th and 12th as well as the afternoon of the 14th to watch a variety of games.

No HD upgrade or anything, but on weekdays, I will be tivoing all the matches and watching them at night after work. Thus, no Internet or connection to the outside world as I will watch the matches at night as though they were live. I might have some trouble doing that, but it will be better not knowing the outcomes.

On weekends I will be going to my local soccer pub to watch the matches with a load of others.

I am going to a Polish pub on the 14th to watch the Poland-Germany match. Should be fun. During the qualifiers, they packed them in for this place and it was quite an atmosphere.

Thus, I will have no life for three or four weeks. My fiance will be in Poland during the World Cup so I will be a lazy ass at home by myself.

    RE: Everyone

You guys in the big cities have all the cool options. I telecommute, so I'll be "away from my desk" for as many matches as I can. I figure the majority of the matches to be weekday morning or afternoon, so I should manage okay.
I was doing this 4 years ago as well, but I lost very few work hours since so much of the fitba was starting at 2 or 3 a.m. here.

As far as sports pubs, although I know several folks here who will be watching soccer, MLS believes [as evidenced by how they tried to sell a local franchise here] and the local network affiliates market soccer as if [a] only Latinos watch it and those that do really want Mexico to win WC CONCACAF, etc. So there probably won't be a whole lot of sport pub action. Sigh.

The good news is that I'm used to being quaint [weird in my younger days]; the other good news is that fitba is the only sport the missus will sit and watch with me.

I will be watching as many of the matches live as I can get and doing the same as Tom with the ones I can't watch...DVR is the greatest invention, EVER.

For any of you local yocals in NY/NJ/CT, I think I will be having some people over my place for the USA Vs. Italy match on June 17th. All are welcome and you will get to enjoy the Sun, sand and hopefully an entertaining match! Mind you, I don't have a cool HD ready 60 inch TV like the very techy cool DCHeather!

    60 inch HDtv, eh?

I'll be watching the all the games I can at home on my trusty 19 inch TV. Yup, the same TV I had in the dorms 9 or so years ago while at college. Wow I should really buy a new TV. Maybe I'll drive over to the Twin Cities and find a pub to watch the games.

Just TIVO'ing here too for the USA and England matches. I'm not sure I will be able to get through the days without hearing the scores from someone at work though. I might have to hide under my desk and turn my computer off so the temptation is not there.

    I'm torn...

I didnt go to ANY of the famous Crew Stadium WC 02 viewing parties... even the Germany game where 7,500 DID.
Reason: Couldnt make it to the first two... then my superstitious streak kicked in.

Now I have to decide if I want to go out there in the middle of the day .. instead of middle of the night.......

Hmm... think I'll buy a Tivo. And go to the Rose and Thistle.. a good little bar run by an english expat near where I work

Yeah, it's a really wonderful tv. Bless those "techie" people. Now if only Comcast would carry ESPN2 in HD.

    From a not-so local yokel:

Beware, Mike, the wife and I may just sneak over there! I'd take my mother's large TV, but only if she's not around that weekend.

Last time out, in Japan and South Korea, I got little sleep, as I taped the first match of the day, then watched it at the same time as the second match (an actualy use for picture-in-picture!), then watch most of the third match before getting in late to work. This time around, I won't be so lucky, but I do plan on brushing up on my Spanish ("Mano a mano" is one of the few things I learned). Is Andreas Cantor going to be doing the commentary?

I?ll be at Crew Stadium for the first two US matches, but will have to be at work for the Ghana match. If anyone is coming to CCS, PM me and we?ll have a pint (or more).

42" HD Plasma for this boy... I picked it up in March and have had a hard time pulling myself off the couch ever since... lord knows the wife has tried!

Unfortunately, I'm missing the game today while at work... but the pub down the street from the office has a 95"(!!!!) HD for all the games... I wonder what I'm doing for lunch on Monday!

Geez, I need to stop buying music equipment (guitars, amplifiers, drum machines etc. etc.) and get a new TV. My little 19" is soon to be the laughing stock of the FUSA. :(
