Tuned into the England-Italy match on FSC to see if either Wayne or Liam made the squad. BOTH STARTED. A couple of half-time comments:

    1. When you sell out 60,000 seats within a couple of hours, why don't you print more tickets? Stupid to have fans clamouring for tickets when the stadium looks deserted.

    2. I wish Brits would learn NOT to put an R on any word ending in A. It sounded like Rosenior was attacking himself most of the half. Try saying these words together -- Rosenior/Rozina. Sigh.

    3. I hate to sound like an old fuddy-duddy, but I'd like to see players pointing to the badge on their shirt when they score. The two-thumb point at their name on the back pisses me off.

    4. Rossi is starting for Italy. I guess he's got the committment from the Azzuri he wanted. I'd have liked to see him playing for the USA, but.

    5. Excellent lineup for England. I like seeing Lita in the lead striker role, and Reo-Coker looks every bit the captain out there.

Very entertaining match, although Richardson can't put a foot right. Hope the Big England squad does well in Israel today.

    Hi Don,

    1. This was the first proper event at the new stadium, it was a proof of design event and was subject to a smaller ticket allocation to meet fire saftey regulations. The stadium should have passed, so next time there is an event it should be able to be sold out.

    2. English is a very diverse language, I speak a fairly precise form where Rozina would never sound like rosenior. As a gordie or a brummie to say it and you will get different sounds.

    3. You are an old fuddy duddy :), but I agree, it should be about the team not the player. Routledge's goal was a great finish. 3-3 is a nice way to welcome the new ground.

    GBFC,

Thanks for the clarification about point 1. I wouldn't have recognized the old place. I visited there twice -- once doing a barely supervised walkthrough on my way to the Horse of the Year Show a block or two away; once at a full England match in the early '70s -- and have the place in my memory vault exactly as it was. I'm hoping that the full 90,000 roar to the heavens for the Watford-Blackburn Cup final.

Great match as it turned out. Nice hattrick for the Fiorentina striker. And a good day for Blackburn's kids as well.

A few thoughts as I watch a late replay...

    That kid Pazzini is good.

Routledge took his goal well - way better finish than I'd have expected - but his crossing was awful.

Liam looked alright, didn't make any bad plays defensively and got in one particularly impressive cross that he threaded through two Italians.

The pair almost combined to cost England when Wayne laid a ball back for Liam, not realizing that Liam had made an overlapping run, leading to a break for Italy.

Speaking of breaks for Italy, I think Hoyte (Arsenal kid who came on for Liam) may have made a bad play leading to Pazzini's third goal. Wasn't sure it was him but I believe so.

Milner, who came on for Routledge, set up Derbyshire's goal (though Bentley, who had a great game, did most of the work) just a few minutes after coming on.

I guess if you're Anton Ferdinand, your brother is a pretty good role model, but that doesn't mean he has to have the EXACT same hairstyle.

Call me vindictive, but I didn't shed any tears for the Italian guy who got his head cut open.
