What is your favourite xmas/holiday song.

HatterDon I'm especially interested in knowing if your ensemble plays xmas music.

My favs are When A Child is Born (Spanish origins), The Rebel Jesus (Jacknon Browne), Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas (Judy Garland), and Fiarytale of New York (the Pogues). A little off topic but so what. Do any soccer fans like xmas music as much as I do

    Hey Mo,

We do a few Christmas songs, but not enough for a whole set. We try to keep them in our genre "wheelhouse" so we do "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree," "Jingle Bell Rock," "Happy Christmas, War is Over," "Santa Baby," and a semi-original by a friend of ours called "Tacky Texas Christmas." We're already thinking about adding a handfull more next year. And, yes, I like Christmas music.

Here are some CDs that we always listen to this time of year [we like jazz, as you may gather]:
A Charlie Brown Christmas -- Vince Guaraldi Trio
We Three Kings -- the Jazz Protagonists [San Antonio combo]
An A Capella Christmas -- The Merrie Court Singers [a Renaissance madrigal group featuring two members of the Tim and Bob Show
Yule B' Swingin' -- Jazz Christmas vocals from various artists
Snowfall -- The Four Freshman [brand new release -- The original 4 Freshman have completely been replaced (they were formed in the '50s), one of their current members is a jazz trumpeter from San Antonio. The CD features other SA jazz musicians and the traditional 4 Freshman harmonies.

If you like off-beat and humorous Christmas stuff, you might check out Robert Earle Keen's christmas songs. A friend of ours performs a few and they're hilarious.

    Happy Christmas, Mo!

I love the Christmas music and always leave it on the the 24 hours of Christmas music station at work. Little Drummer Boy is my favorite song.

Wow Terri that's quite a list and an alternative one at that. We had one in common - Fairytale of New York, a pure classic. Tell me do you think they end up together or apart? And if my list was longer I would've included the Ramones' Merry xmas (dont want to fight). Another good more alternative carol is Thank God It's Christmas by Queen.

Hatter I'm not familiar with any of your jazz selections other than A Charlie Brown Christmas, which I love. But then I'm sort of like Ricky Bobby and Cal Naughtin when it comes to jazz. My collection is mostly traditional, rock/alt. rock, and Irish. I'll have to check out your jazz choices and expand my collection for our xmas party. Thanks

Happy Christmas to Hatter, Terri, dtwondough, and all FFC fans!!

How about the worse Christmas music? Other than the Chipmunks, two of my picks for the worse songs are Elton John's Welcome to My Christmas Song and Paul McCartney's Having a Wonderful Christmas Time (dont know if those are the actual titles because I try to avoid them at all costs).

Well, it's not a song; it's a rendition. I admire Johnny Cash tremendously, and I love "Silent Night." But he perpetrated possibly the worst treatment of that song ever recorded.

Christmas songs I could happily NEVER hear again: "Little Saint Nick," by the Beach Boys; "Blue Christmas" by Elvis Presley; "Rudolph, the (you know)" by Bruce Springsteen. There are others, but I'm working on my "ho ho ho" crouch now, so I don't want to bring myself down.

Agree with "Little Saint Nick" but happen to love Presley's "Blue Christmas", but now that you've said that I'll probably analyze it to death and end up hating it.

Nobody's mentioned for best/worst: "Grandma Got Ran Over By A Raindeer"??? Woe is me.

Ahh, but you have mentioned the great "Fairytale of New York" with the late K. MacColl on guest vocals. Outstanding.

Terrinh73, I'd love to see your musical collection b/c you've referenced everything from The Beatles, to Run DMC, to Billy Squier (!!!!) to XTC. My compliments, brilliant list.

    terrinh73 -- that is quite a list!

    I'd also like to add:

"(It's Gonna Be A) Punk Rock Christmas" - The Ravens
"Little Drummer Boy" - RuPaul (yup! Not as bad as it should be)
    "Santa, Baby" - Cindy Lauper
"Santa Claus is Comin' To Town" - Springsteen

And my favorite, all-time bringer-downer (makes Joy Division look like the Go-Go's) -- Cristina's song "Things Fall Apart".

Oh, but my favorite holiday song is Nancy LaMott's title track off my fave Christmas album, "Just In Time For Christmas". That is an excellent album, holiday or not. I am lucky to have seen her perform. She was 5' of incredible energy. RIP.

The best album I've never heard recorded is Michael Feinstein's stuff.

Now, how many times do you read someone liking The Ramones and Michael Feinstein in the same posting??

    Here's one for ya, pard:

    [ballado rubato on the intro]
    "Tinsel draping black and white;
there's a hint of snow tonight.
All we need to make things right ...
is just one lousy win on the road ....

[Please, Mr. Berlin; don't sue me!]
    "I'm dreaming of a three-pointer,
Just like the ones I've read about
    Where the wingers cross it
    And the strikers boss it
And Lawrie doesn't have to pout.

    "I'm dreaming of a road vic'try,
Or maybe even two or three
I would be as thrilled as can be
If the boys bring home a win for me."

It must be pretty neat to have a whole genre of music dedicated to your birthday, eh.

The Christmas Song (Chestnuts roasting on an open fire)- Nat King Cole

The Little Drummer Boy - Bing & Bowie

The ladies in my life make me listen to the radio station that plays all Christmas music for the month of Dec. while in the car...and yes I'm looking forward to January.

Oy, how could I have forgotten Bono's wail on U2's cover of Darlene Love's "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" (or Death Cab for Cutie's version is solid as well.)

You guys are going to make me spend a FORTUNE on iTunes!

There's another song that I've heard tell is a new Christmas classic, though I believe it is a dubious honor, to be sure:
Malcom Middleton "We're All Going To Die"
Here it is...you tell me ;)
