Charles Renken

    Don't know how many of you remember the U-17 tourney covered on FSC earlier this year, but there was a VERY young kid from Illinois named Charles Renken who knocked me over with his savvy and strength -- not bad for a kid that still is only 14.

    Anyhow, there's a very extensive article about him over on SOCCERNET.

    Word is that as soon as it's legal, he's off to one of the Big 4 clubs.

    Amazing journey from Zambia to a small town in Southern Illinois. I remember the game vs Brazil when at 14 he was by far the best player on the pitch. You never know how a kid will develop, but he has gifts the great players have. If he does progress as expected it will be interesting to see what the USSF does to make sure he chooses to play for us and not Zambia (hate to see Subotic unsure about whom to play for)

    Because of their similar backgrounds, he's always compared to Freddy, but if memory serves Charles is thin w/long legs (compared to Freddy being compact) and should end up being quite a bit taller.

    The speculation that he'll be senior capped before 17 speaks to how bad the USSF wants to make sure he's not the next Guiseppe Rossi.
