After Glazer debacle with the ManUre, who would have thought ......

I suppose it helps that Villa is, like the Browns, on the bottom looking up, but the difference in the attitudes is outstanding.

Even more surprising is the Browns' fans reciprocating much of the enthusiasm on Browns' boards. Though it's early in the day... I have to say I'm a little envious.

Not that I'd budge from supporting Paul Brown's REAL team, the Bengals... but Randy Lerner is CLEARLY not a {reformed} putz like Mike Brown.

There's also the difference of debt. ManU were in a good financial situation before Glazer. Glazer takes over and assumes a massive amount of debt and raises ticket prices as one of his first actions. Not very endearing to ManU fans, I'd be upset and worried too. But I wouldn't burn the guy in effigy or make death threats against him, but that's Mancunians for you.

Villa were zombies before the takeover, they might have given Bush a warm reception if he brought the team a massive cash injection.

Interesting that UEFA thinks they need to step in. I think the U.S. investors look at teams in the Premiership as the best in the world, and then look at how some of them are run by poor management and poor marketing, and they feel like they can turn the ship around. Naturally, Americans don't want to be left out of the fun, and if all the international and club jerseys I see people wearing more and more are any indication, there is a major European club following tsunami forming. I think its still a gamble, but these new owners are positioning themselves for the tidal wave of American interest and support (monetary support) that they see headed towards the shore. It's a testament to what the Premiership has become, which is one of the best, if not the best, club leagues in the world. Which is why many Fulham fans are demanding more out of our Mo, Cookie and the club.

Oopps, we want to expand our market across the globe, but we don't want to have "foreigners" own our teams. Sorry kids, you can't have it both ways.

The Premiership maybe one of the best leagues in the world, but Americans only want to own one of the teams because it's the most marketable league in the States.

"Only" is a pretty definitive word. I would say mostly because of the money. But me personally being mostly an idealist, I do sometimes like to think that these owners and potential owners like sports also.

We both agree on the money bit. But I'll disagree on the for love bit, I don't hear much news about American investors bidding for a team in Romania or Hungary (much cheaper to buy, I would presume), or even for teams in the Bundesliga. Perhaps they would when more Americans started paying more attention to those countries' teams. The Premiership gets more coverage in the States, hence the big $ in marketing.

Speaking of marketing, several local stations down this way are still running a Spanish-language Budweiser ad featuring a huge Mexican flag being unfurled at the World Cup. It occurred to me to wonder whther, Budweiser being the "official beer" of the WC, we were the only country in which Bud sold brew where the WC tie-in wasn't trumpeted.

It seems to me that for marketing purposes, we're most interested in getting our brands to huge soccer audiences OVERSEAS. I don't think that the coverage of European fitba in the states is big enough to make team ownership attractive. I think it's an investment for profit -- pure and simple.

Now that makes it really clear, Don. Completely, agree.

But I do think the game is growing in this country. Especially the Premiership--I've seen coverage of the sport grow so much in the past 5-10 years. It would make sense to get in the market now, who knows what the coverage will be like in the next 10 years? Will the Premiership have its own channel? Oh, I could dream.

Yep. That's my prediction also. Premiership is the #1 fitba league in the world, based on revenue. Over 2Billion pounds, much coming from the sale of paraphenalia. Well which populace of which country in the world seems to dispose of its income in the largest numbers? That would be the citizens of the United States of American Consumption.

We should be so proud! (Tongue firmly implanted in cheek.)
