Monaco has been waving megabucks at half the free agents in Europe this season without a lot of success. They've got loads of cash, but their park only holds about what a decent Texas high school football stadium holds.

Good luck to Freddy. Let's hope he gets some minutes.

In a Guardian article this past week Freddy Adu's transfer to Monaco is described as a complete failure so far.

Whichever guy covers Ligue 1 for the Guardian. They do a weekly round-up of the league I think. The article was mainly about Yoann Gourcuff and how he's the next Zidane. Adu's transfer was brought up as a failure compared to Gourcuff success at Bordeaux.

thanks for the follow up. I was just wondering. Freddy was on the bench mostly in the Portuguese Liga. Being as Ligue 1 is a step up, and Freddy's still a baby, I didn't see his riding the pine in the early part of the season at Monaco evidence of anything. I think he'll get his chances this season, and I think he'll do well with them.

Bocanegra's Rennes beat Adu's Monoco 2-1. The former started while the latter came on in the 69th minute.

Adu came on in the 75th minute today, with home side Monaco up 3-2 vs. Bordeaux. During the final 15 minutes, Freddy managed to unnecessarily clear the ball out for a corner, which resulted in the tying goal and was then muscled off the ball in the midfield, which directly led to Bordeaux's winning goal.

Methinks he won't be seeing any playing time in the near future.

andy, Monaco have a crap side and Bordeaux is challenging for the title -- or at least 2nd place behind Lyon. Blowing a three-goal lead at home is pretty heavy luggage for a little guy from Maryland to carry. I think you're being a bit harsh to our lad.

Don, Andy's version above is the nice version. My description would go more like this:

After entering the match in the 75th minute with Monaco ahead 3-2 Freddie Adu managed to set the abilities of American footballers in the eyes of European viewers back by at least 5 years. With the ball sitting just inside Monaco's 18 yard box and no Bordeaux player within two yards of him Adu showed a complete lack of composure by booting the ball over the byline. It was on Adu's gifted and completly unessessary corner kick that Bordeaux produced the game tying goal. Only minutes later Adu was easlily knocked off the ball just inside Bordeaux's half of the field. While Adu sat on his buttox waving his arms for a foul that never happened Bordeaux counter-attacked and produced the match winning goal. All told it was a miserable 20 minute performance for Adu in which he failed to perform like a professional footballer. While it is true that Monaco's defense perhaps could have defended better in the final minutes of the match it is hard not to hold Adu responsible for his poor showing.

Please remember that I am a fan of Adu's but this is the nicest version of what I watched that I could come up with.

Adu better get his head on straight. I think andy was reporting some match facts, and unfortunately for Adu, those facts do not portray a very focused young man.

Any of us who follow European football know how quickly a prospects opportunity to impress and advance can fade away. I don't think anyone wants to see Adu become not even a footnote at Benfica and Monaco, but if he cannot get his focus and attitude to match his skill, I fear he'll be back in the Middle School League sooner rather than later.

Ives thinks Adu should consider another move. I don't know if it is quite that time yet but if he cannot crack the starting squad soon one may be in his near future.

He needs to go to Holland. They know how to channel attacking flair and play a style that doesn't stifle those types of players.
